  • is that a flattened out china he's using for a ride? sounds great.

  • @ALEXXvsZOMBIES Its a Zildjian oriental crash of doom.

  • @Beatpoet19 funny that you say that, I actually just ordered one! they sound amazing

  • @Beatpoet19 Funny that you say that, I actually just bought one. they're pretty sweet.

  • I kinda wish they hadn't cut out all the talking. You can learn just as much from a musician's words as their playing sometimes.

  • I love how hard it is for everyone to keep up with Thomas. Thats why they were pretty much like, lets just let him have his solo, then when he slows down we can play again.

  • @xTomei if you knew anything about jazz, and playing over a form or vamp, you would know that thomas is actually trying to keep up with them, of course no offense to thomas but these cats get there shit and often drummers are the ones (including myself) who have to learn how to adapt in a jazz enviroment

  • the guy rules, but he's fuckin ruining this groove entirely

  • @animalnoise1 yep exactly.

  • gotta love the 'lax face of the bass player :) and stalone stare of the trumpet player

  • I agree he is doing waaaay to much.

Knock it down a bit brah, your very talented but there is no need to showcase everything you can do ALL the time. Things would have sounded much better together as a BAND. Not just as the DRUMMER and the other people standing in the room.

  • @iareme05 yea man he has sick grooves, i know hes a beast but i wanna see his sick grooves more never lets us have a chance to listen to it lmao

  • @iareme05 um, it looks like they're just rehearsing the hits of a drum solo. kind of seems like chopping a lot would be the point

  • @iareme05 its called a solo break, relax people.

  • How is this not musical? He's taking a drum solo lol

  • Funny HOw The band is Losing time when Thomas Is Chopping

  • i love it when Christian cuts off the band hahahaha

  • Whats the name of the last song they were playing?

  • @colmcb311 that's an efx crash bro from zildjian somewhat favors the crash of doom

  • cajj mcdonalds lol

  • wait this was back then when he attended the school?

  • what is this song called?

  • @1lildrummerboy kiel

  • what the first ride he use ? awesome sound

  • @shorebrak busted up zildjian oriental crash of doom i believe

  • Curious as to how this video was recorded.

Killer quality considering there isn't a mic in sight. I am assuming it is from the camera, what with the cymbals muffling at 2:27 and all.

I'd love to know how it was captured.

  • @deadprecedence

I agree, it sounds really good flowing through a camera mic.

  • Anyone criticizing these guys for "overdoing" or overplaying, keep in mind, they are fucking teenagers! blowing through Berklee like its kindergarten! Jazz, rock, prog is in awesome hands with young brilliance like this.

  • thomas man, u gotta post some vids of u playing some of ur most common fills man... us other young drummers are dying to learn ur stuff man. throw us a bone lol.

  • Thomas always had one of the sickest styles.

  • damn i digg this alot. that drummer is HELLA talented

  • i dislike this because Thomas is clearly still a young player and apparently hasn't developed the mature chops he has now and the intuitiveness to know when to fill and when to chill.

  • @ZebraBear88 its a drum solo though. listen to christian scotts album rewind that. Its pretty good. fusion jazz drums are often very choppy.. although it does require good ears of course. BUT i do agree with you that even the solo is just kinda not good when its just mad chops.

  • @pricesmithmusic & @ZebraBear88 The first half of this video brings me back on a weekly basis. Watching good quality footage of a young Pridgen wilding out on some jazz is hella refreshing.

  • these other musicians are obviously good, which they should be sense their at berkley, but noone can match up to omar and the other mars volta guys. thomas is too good for berkley...

  • Is it just me, or are the other musicians getting slightly annoyed with his uber fill playing? Especially the guitarist, it seems. The keys player seems to be the only one who is totally comfortable keeping time with Thomas.

  • So this is where his dreadlocks began...

  • hahahahha @ 2:25

  • ZACCAI!

  • Obviously an ace drummer but he needs to know when to cool it. Too much overplaying here.

  • trumpet player is WOW, holy hell what sound !

  • @shootsbraw you mean Christian Scott?

  • that last take was pretty good :)

  • lol, eaten some mcdonalds, yea

  • I'd like to see Pridgen work with Christian Scott or another jazz musician again. I felt that Pridgen's in pocket yet wild gospel kinda style combined with Scott's compositions made the music more driving and exciting. The drumming really increased the head nod factor.

  • he was trying to hold that smile at 7:45 lol

    happens to me too

  • basically if thomas pridgen is in the room, don't put the camera on him because the music stops and the drumming starts.

  • @HarmPoy this is probably a drum solo section at times

  • Ace video man.

  • hahahaha, lol when his cymbal came off

  • ... its bass, nobody fucking cares.

  • @Killenmachine05 Any true musician (Especially drummers. Or at least good drummers) know that bass makes a huge difference in a bands sound and feel.

  • isnt it called a double bass?

  • @ilythuy Double basses have an extension on their lowest string (E string) that can be used to make that string a C string. What he is playing is just called a stand-up bass.

  • @JonnyBoyPugh Lol, dude, stfu. It's a double bass. Why don't you ask the professional musicians I see every day what it's called.

  • the cello is such BIGGG instrument

  • @Jmelody321 It's a bass, but technically it's pretty much a larger cello.

  • @jstafuckinusername o ok cool

  • I really appreciate Chris taking the time to make sure that the form (even the solo's) was tight. As musicians, we hear and feel things differently, but it's important for bandmates to know what the other is hearing and feeling to communicate the music to the listeners well. We can all learn a lot from this clip.

  • @granvillemullingsjr Couldn't agree more. More musicians need to read that excerpt you just wrote.

  • The trumpet just wants in and Pridgen doesn't give a fuck. The geetar player got some though.

  • Christian Scott and Thomas Pridgen mastered this song on Christian Scott's album. The song is Kiel and it's from Christian Scott's Rewind That album...one of my favorites by the way

  • BAHAHAHA @2:25

  • @dokaflokajoe that sounded good to me

  • @drointhedrawer refering to when the ride cymbal took flight and landed on the floor tom. :P

  • HAHAHAH 2:25 the cymbal coming of the stand!! also he CUT HIS HAIR?

  • @Keplaffintech

your such a fucking dumb ass man! cut his hair? it clearly says on the description of the video berklee school of music! he went there when he was like 17 or 18! so no he didnt cut his hair! he is young as fuck here! just goes to show you how good of a musician he really is and how shitty of one you are lol

  • @mrsmithcolin175 relax fag lol

  • @ChosenTV09 ok maybe i did go a little overboard but that was an ignorant ass comment that guy made...its people like that who think travis barker is the shit lol

  • @mrsmithcolin175 yeh cause not knowing that it was an old video means im a dumb ass...

  • @mrsmithcolin175

you have such a negative attitude, I bet you're not a very happy person.

  • so glad you posted this, thanks

  • @drummagn3t14 bra are you serious? that what makes the solo hella dope my nigga... first of all can u even play???

  • @dariusDdrums yea i can

  • he uses too much snare man

  • @drummagn3t14 That's like telling a guitar player he's using "too much" strings?!

  • @bigxjon91 The crash and hi hats appear to be from the now discontinued re-mix line from Zildjian. These cymbals sound cool here, i guess they didn't sell well and that's why they we're discontinued.

The only surviving member from that line appears to be the breakbeat ride..

  • Comment removed

  • so its official that sabian stole the idea for their ozone cymbal from zildjian because that was clearly a prototype cymbal he was using

  • LMAO @ 0:40 they all staring at thomas.

  • this is gold fottage right here!XD, its really neat to see the difference in the years

  • thomas is playin wit em on purpose IT HILARIOUS

  • is this bryan baker on guitar?

  • @progmuesli think it's matt stevens

  • Respond to this video... think its matt stevens

  • guitarist cant count... shocker

  • @zimmoframen what are you on about. he's an awesome guitarist and he's also christans scotts MD. im pretty sure he can count man...

  • @ozzaman my bad he is probably is awesome, but he loses the count every time thomas solos at the start of this vid...

im also really biased cos i go to a music college and 99% of the guitarists there would rather work on stupid chops etc than work on their meter, and it makes it hard to solo sometimes.

  • @zimmoframen lol jamie.... its me oran. know what you mean about the meter thing though ;)

  • @ozzaman yeah bro TP twisted him and no matter who he MDs for he cannot stick it to Pridgen during the solo. I personally think its bad form...but then again they are at a school, and this is them practicing / perfecting their art - we're very lucky to see such great footage...and I'm pretty sure at the gig the gat player is counting 32nd notes in his head hard out - and nervous as shit...cause if anyone can lose you in a solo its Pridgen.

  • so good! kickin ass man... and lol @2:25

  • @drummingblind And u see after that he has a different heavier ride up lol

  • @ntrakit6 i think thats a crash cymbal haha. the zildjian crash of doom

  • @Bentoss612 so damn trashy and dark. i love it!

  • Wow man! I've been wanting to see how you played back then. awesome

  • Holy shit, you cut your hair. When I first saw this I was thinking this guy has some serious skill. He's just as good as Pridgen. Then noticed it was you.

Still though. Amazing music. Loved all of it.

  • @jstafuckinusername nah, this is really, really, old before he had the dreads x

  • @jstafuckinusername dude this was before the dreads. not after.

  • @jesselondon72 Yea, someone else informed me about this. But in light of my mistake, I think we can all agree that no matter the hairstyle, Thomas Pridgen is a beast.

  • @jstafuckinusername dude is a beast - was born a beast - and on top of that is also a hella fukin good guy. He's right up there for me in the all timers list...and still so young.

  • I love this. Thanks for posting you're YouTube account link on Facebook, by the way. I'll forever be a listener of you're music! God Bless, man!
