I love how hard it is for everyone to keep up with Thomas. Thats why they were pretty much like, lets just let him have his solo, then when he slows down we can play again.
@xTomei if you knew anything about jazz, and playing over a form or vamp, you would know that thomas is actually trying to keep up with them, of course no offense to thomas but these cats get there shit and often drummers are the ones (including myself) who have to learn how to adapt in a jazz enviroment
Knock it down a bit brah, your very talented but there is no need to showcase everything you can do ALL the time. Things would have sounded much better together as a BAND. Not just as the DRUMMER and the other people standing in the room.
Anyone criticizing these guys for "overdoing" or overplaying, keep in mind, they are fucking teenagers! blowing through Berklee like its kindergarten! Jazz, rock, prog is in awesome hands with young brilliance like this.
thomas man, u gotta post some vids of u playing some of ur most common fills man... us other young drummers are dying to learn ur stuff man. throw us a bone lol.
i dislike this because Thomas is clearly still a young player and apparently hasn't developed the mature chops he has now and the intuitiveness to know when to fill and when to chill.
@ZebraBear88 its a drum solo though. listen to christian scotts album rewind that. Its pretty good. fusion jazz drums are often very choppy.. although it does require good ears of course. BUT i do agree with you that even the solo is just kinda not good when its just mad chops.
@pricesmithmusic & @ZebraBear88 The first half of this video brings me back on a weekly basis. Watching good quality footage of a young Pridgen wilding out on some jazz is hella refreshing.
these other musicians are obviously good, which they should be sense their at berkley, but noone can match up to omar and the other mars volta guys. thomas is too good for berkley...
Is it just me, or are the other musicians getting slightly annoyed with his uber fill playing? Especially the guitarist, it seems. The keys player seems to be the only one who is totally comfortable keeping time with Thomas.
I'd like to see Pridgen work with Christian Scott or another jazz musician again. I felt that Pridgen's in pocket yet wild gospel kinda style combined with Scott's compositions made the music more driving and exciting. The drumming really increased the head nod factor.

I really appreciate Chris taking the time to make sure that the form (even the solo's) was tight. As musicians, we hear and feel things differently, but it's important for bandmates to know what the other is hearing and feeling to communicate the music to the listeners well. We can all learn a lot from this clip.
Christian Scott and Thomas Pridgen mastered this song on Christian Scott's album. The song is Kiel and it's from Christian Scott's Rewind That album...one of my favorites by the way
your such a fucking dumb ass man! cut his hair? it clearly says on the description of the video berklee school of music! he went there when he was like 17 or 18! so no he didnt cut his hair! he is young as fuck here! just goes to show you how good of a musician he really is and how shitty of one you are lol
@ChosenTV09 ok maybe i did go a little overboard but that was an ignorant ass comment that guy made...its people like that who think travis barker is the shit lol
@bigxjon91 The crash and hi hats appear to be from the now discontinued re-mix line from Zildjian. These cymbals sound cool here, i guess they didn't sell well and that's why they we're discontinued.
The only surviving member from that line appears to be the breakbeat ride..
@ozzaman my bad he is probably is awesome, but he loses the count every time thomas solos at the start of this vid...
im also really biased cos i go to a music college and 99% of the guitarists there would rather work on stupid chops etc than work on their meter, and it makes it hard to solo sometimes.
@ozzaman yeah bro TP twisted him and no matter who he MDs for he cannot stick it to Pridgen during the solo. I personally think its bad form...but then again they are at a school, and this is them practicing / perfecting their art - we're very lucky to see such great footage...and I'm pretty sure at the gig the gat player is counting 32nd notes in his head hard out - and nervous as shit...cause if anyone can lose you in a solo its Pridgen.
Holy shit, you cut your hair. When I first saw this I was thinking this guy has some serious skill. He's just as good as Pridgen. Then noticed it was you.
@jesselondon72 Yea, someone else informed me about this. But in light of my mistake, I think we can all agree that no matter the hairstyle, Thomas Pridgen is a beast.
@jstafuckinusername dude is a beast - was born a beast - and on top of that is also a hella fukin good guy. He's right up there for me in the all timers list...and still so young.
is that a flattened out china he's using for a ride? sounds great.

I kinda wish they hadn't cut out all the talking. You can learn just as much from a musician's words as their playing sometimes.

Curious as to how this video was recorded.
Killer quality considering there isn't a mic in sight. I am assuming it is from the camera, what with the cymbals muffling at 2:27 and all.
I'd love to know how it was captured.
