Should of put pressure with your hand in stirrup first to see his reaction. Second when he jumped a little bit should of known he was going to buck. As for training put a Bucking Strap on him with a fake dummy human and let him wear it for a few days. Tightening as the day goes through but not so tight to where it hurts him and makes him want to buck. Then tie him up and cross hobble him running rope from front left leg to right hind leg.
However when I jumped him in a saddle with a wider tree to fit his back, he still wouldn't listen. I really want to continue jumping with this horse and be able to compete with him, but I don't understand whats going on? I have tried many different exercises with him to help soften him up and regain control and I do not want to keep bitting him up or using artificial aids on him. They don't really help and I'm afraid they will just make him worse. I am so frustrated.
@horseproblems The problem is he bucked his last 3 Owners off. That is because he could, because his Mouth was not such that it could be used to stop him bucking. I remouthed him in one Day and you see the result. He then went to a Show Career, successfully. Horses like this start to think they have to Buck. Only stopping them can fix them.
John, of all the natural horsman I ve seen you are one of the best riders ever! So quick and correct. Many thank to Horseproblems your podcasts are fabulous!
my horse bucks me off all the time. 1st it was when mounting. now hes pretty good about it but still has his moments during every ride. there really is no warning and he takes the reigns out of my hands before i get a chance at an emrg. reign. hes 7 and previously been in several auctions and traders throughout his life. so we have no history on him at all. i know for a fact that hes not in pain and hes not afraid of hardly anything. can you please give me some tips on how to stop it ?
But how do you control horses from doing this on rides other than a one-reign stop? I don't have a horse of my own, so I always ride other peoples. I can stay on when they act up, but it gets annoying at times. Any suggestions?
Hi john, I watch your videos & enjoy them with great interest ..although your control is excellent & as you don't know the horses well & was an assessment im curious to know why you didn't use martingales for that little extra control...
Because they don't assist at all. I prefer to fix the Mouth and then you don't need anything. Martingales really do not assist imho. I had laterally remouthed this Horse 10 minutes before. He had bucked off three previous Owners and these Owners. They went away having watched me and I was contacted 4 weeks ago by new Owners in Victoria where the Horse is going fantastic. Yet another Horse ruined by the Big Spur, big Ego and Big Hat Brigade. Regards
@MsZippa Because the Martingale doesn't give my extra control. I remouthed him and that is the only control I need. If the integrity of the Mouth is good, no help is needed. Regards
Thanks for a nice video! Got a problem with my horse, she is 5 years old and im 15 so 2 youngsters... Well the thing is she has a lot of spare energy and loves to start bucking when im mounted and not "keeping her busy". Got any advice how to train her to get faith for me and getting more calm?
this is pretty good advice :D i figured out why i was unable to control my horse...she kept getting the head in the air, so when i pulled back, it really didn't do anything, so we put a set of rings on her or tie-downs if u wish to call them n nows shes almost a perfect little mare.
I enjoy the videos, they're very good, and I like the term "re-mouthing" - what gets me is people who are supposedly trainers, and who take a problem horse, start riding him without really teaching anything - the owner is amazed, and the horse is fine, as long as nothing comes along to upset him, or as long as he isn't asked to do anything. We've seen this with the "horse personality" training, and the horse is fine as long as you don't leave that trainer.
We have a couple of Thoroughbreds that were trained with a 'war bridle', or nerve line. So, they've got head issues. Oddly enough, they are not headshy, and they're easy to bridle. But - they can pull back to the point of being dangerous. You cannot put anything gimmicky on their heads, has to be a regular halter. It's improved a lot with patience, and just their trust in us, but it will always be a bit of an issue. I wonder what you do for that?
I posted a response to this HP because I wanted you to see, how I broke my pony mare, from bolting while mounting....I do what feels right, and this is what worked....but I am not sure, if I did it in such a way, that I achieved long lasting results...which is what I am after of course..I am thinking the tap might work good for her...but she is nervous, and untrusting...I would have to train her for leg restraints first, and get the right equipment from you, before even thinking more on it...
We've had one - just recently. It didn't eradicate problems, but it did help out some health problems, which in turn, got rid of some of the behavioural issues. Usually though it's going to come back again if it's not dealt with.
the one I'm thinking of is an Anglo Arab who was just over-showed, jumper circuit -got plenty of ribbons, including firsts at Spruce Meadows (not the international ring), and we bought him as a wreck with ulcers and bone spurs; had become a weaver - can't keep him indoors. Pasture has made him healthier and happier - large pasture, but the behaviour problems are still there if he's pushed, plus the basic training problems that nobody saw fit to correct before he was 11, when we got him.
Great video's, quick question... What do you do with a horse that every time you attempt to mount it flips over backwards and I mean throws itself hard on the ground. I had a gelding that did this and i was able to get him over it but it took a long time and was just curious what techniques you would use. I would like to know for the future if i get another horse like this for training what methods other than my own work well.
That is the most dangerous of all the problems in the Horse Industry and the only one where I consider the abbatoirs. If you insist, tie the Horse up to a safe tie up rail like mine and mount many times, to break the mental block the horse has there. It may already have brain damage though, caused by doing this in the first place and every time it does it, the chances of death are real!!!! I have seen 3 die during my life.
Thanks for the advise, we had a horse when i was younger that flipped while it was tied to the trailer that died. I always enjoy your video's and trust in your training methods.
I'd maybe have him euthanized, but never send him to the slaughterhouse. Just can't do it. We have one in Alberta, and I think it's often an out for poor horsemanship, and for poor management - breeders.
Would like to have seen a little more of the bay horse Mr O'Leary. How you (and if you) resolved that issue with him.
You're a braver person than me! With a reaction like that I think I just would have started all over again with that horse. Like he'd never been handled in the first place.
I did but as I said, that was for Court. Then I worked with the Horse, which turned out wonderful and is being prepared by the Owner for her first Dressage Show now. The Horse had a mental problem with mounting, caused by failed mounting, caused by failed rein control and Mouthing in the first place. Regards
to your closing coments, amen. Saving lives and injuries. Can't sue anyone in Oklahama because a horse bucks you off or hurts you or itself for any reason. Inherent risks in handling any livestock are assumed by rider or handler. Gross and wanton neglegence protect animals from substandard boarding and training conditions but it is near impossible to get a case hearing against a facility or an individual. All horses are unpredictable according to Oklahoma Statutes. You ride you may die.
happy new year o'leary. I have three in the barn that I own. a 3 to get ready to show and two 2yr olds to start. they are my resolution. How bout you? Also; do you train any cow horses? just currious. Finally, liberals always want to blame someone else. My nation is falling from power right now because we are run by idiots more concerned with who to blame than how to solve the problems we face. Thnk G-D for another year. We can make this one better than last.
It's alarming now that people are suing for being kicked or thrown, and are suing even if they ride up too close behind another horse, and their horse is kicked. I think there are some cases in Ontario.
The Bay Mare was with a Trainer for 4 Months and he kept wanting another week so I got the job of assessing her :) The Pally was sold to a client, bucked them all off, another Trainer couldn't get on and that too was an assessment to see if they could get their money back. Cheers

@halfgoodhalfevil By simply shutting any negative behaviour down, they come good and forget it. The Power of the top Mouth puts relaxation on Horses.

Sometimes horses just have to be left in a pasture for a year, and started out again when they've had time to decompress from humans.

I have never met a case where that has helped Uni. Maybe one day I shall
