Duct tape on the drum heads doesn't bode well for your credibility in the drumming world. You should know how to TUNE YOUR DRUMS so you don't have to put duct tape on them. Proper head choice, and proper tuning technique means NO TAPE.
@DrummingNonStop Yes, I know what dampening is, but it won't cut the sound that much, especially if volume is the issue. Again, proper head choice and tuning will make your drums sing. Duct tape is just a bad idea on your drum heads, but I suppose if you cant' tune properly and can't afford something like moon gel, it's the only choice you have.
Fail because he tells you what to do but not how to do it. But seeing as he can't do a roll very well himself it's no wonder why he wouldn't explain it, because he probably doesn't know exactly what he's doing.
@liljon71 - Dude give it up already. These people are far from experts. The guy in this video hasn't even developed proper control just by the way he starts the exercise. Wake up! Read a book, a drum book specifically; About how to play the exercise for double strokes properly. You fail to see these people on 'expert village' are showing things and clrearly not benefitting from their own practice techniques and recommendations! Wake UP!
Although it's still not as detailed as it could be, this is the FIRST VillageExpert I've seen (by chance, not by choice!) that didn't totally fail. I'm impressed!
Apparently he is focusing on beginners. I thought his double stroke roll was perfect and remember, what works for some may not work for others so to all of you who are trying to blast this guy.... take a look in the mirror before you pass judgement. Let me see YOU post a video that looks and sounds as good as this. Oh and by the way, I am a drummer and I thought this video was awesome.
Terrible posture. Slumping in a chair is very bad showmanship. Also you shouldn't have thumbs on top. It is a very bad habit with some drummers. Anothert bad habit with this guy is he only has three fingers on the each stick.
@spikeyty He didn't have his thumbs on top. In german grip the thumbs sit in a diagonal angle because that's how it looks like when you straighten your fingers when you place your palm flat on a table surface. Moreover American grips place the palms in a diagonal angle thus making the thumbs on top, which this guy didn't do.
Before teaching, perfect a few things, right back at you.
Check out Carter Beauford, his thumbs are on top. Have a go at him and see if he'll slap you.
wow this was actually a little helpful....good god it's a sign of the apocalypse, expert village made a somewhat helpful video! We're all gonna fucking die!!!!
And this is why expertvillage should be banned. I want to learn from proper videos. I'm not a drummer and even I can spy (with my little eye) that his technique s*cks.
YOUR TECHNIQUE IS ALL WRONG. Sorry, but your arms are so close to your ribs the power needed to play live or with a band is very weak. wrist work is good :). If you notice your elbows come out when speeding up, therefore indicating that you are using muscles which (in practicing situations) arent needed. For power on stage and within the double patterns accenting beats become more obvious. If you disagree, then maybe my technique is perhaps incorrect for your style of playing. Nice kit man :D
Thank you for kinda backing up what I was saying. Haha apparently you're the only one commenting here who is. Oh well, I mean I guess it is a "beginner" lesson anyway and this is how I'd show beginning drummers doubles first, just to teach them how to control bounce, which is all this is. But you eventually need to learn to be fluid and control the strokes instead of using your arms in a one piece move. And it is difficult to learn to do this at high speeds.
I find, with snare, that doubles speed isn't that important. You can double sixteenths at most tempos and still keep the strainers vibrating in a roll.
Good point. If you notice that in this guy's video for the press roll, he uses the same form (locked wrists, one piece pressing arm movement) as he does for fast doubles. Evidence right there that something isn't right. Well it is Expert Village, where nothing from these "experts" can be taken seriously lol
What Kenny G. does here is let the stick bounce naturally. The correct way is to
have the stick bounce when you lift your arms. Set a metronome at 60 and practice 8th notes with the first note falling (gravity) and the second one lifting your arm (lower arm). That means that your arms motion is constant (up-down, up-down etc). Increment speed slowly and start spreading hits on all the drums. After a year you will have master double strokes.
On toms, your right. You have to control the second hit and not rely on bounce so much. I played in a rockabilly group and used a Sing Sing Sing type swing rythem on the floors and used double strokes with it, sound great, but you cannot use bounce, but actually play out the 2 hits..
look up Jim Chapin's vid on doubles to see how to do it with power and finesse...they basically will sound like singles when you do them right. It's called an open roll for a reason. If you want to play a closed roll in doubles then you rely more on bounce but it should still sound smooth and not all choked
@drummer9042 What the fuck is a petafile? Are you fucking retarded? If you mean "pedophile" or "paedophile" they you're still a c*nt for being so judgemental, I'd like to see you saying that to this guy's face.

There is no such thing as a "wrong way" to do things. Its all about making a choice. This guy thought that this way sounded the best, so he plays like that. For your info i play the same way (although i use the traditional grip) and thats how my teacher taught me. My teacher has been playing in one of the best symphony orcestras in sweden for 20 years, so i think he knows what hes talking about.

BOUNCING !!! WTF YOU CHEAT !!!!!! do what i did and got them to almost a roll without bouncing and use wrist for control not the bounce ! the reason why im saying this is because if ure doing Doubles on the snare and you want to use your toms in the proses the doubles are going to sound SHIT!!!, so get control and you will find that everything els comes allot easier :)
well i have comtrol, i like play drums for a year or so, but i recently started on double strokes, but the point is just i cant get a double out of my left hand
@allmetaliswelcome THATS ALRIGHT ! KEEP PRACTICING ok !! the thing is this guy must be playing for at least 10 years...... Everyone start somewhere... right ?? !! ;-)
im practicing for a month non stop allready, and there isn't much process. and i know, i believe in practicing, its just going slower than i expected. and btw hes playing for 30 years ^_^
DAMMM , 30years only ??!! lol ;-) thats a LONGGGG druming experience, i i'm at my 14years now but if i can say something for you, DONT WORRY b-cuz PROGRESS COMES NOT ONLY WITH TIME... IT COME also with the ''passion'' you have for druming. If you '' f****g LOVE PLAY drum , you will progress FASTER than someone who do not want to play that mutch... KEEP UP MATE !
@allmetaliswelcome well it's also about practicing SMART. you MUST have purpose in your practice or you become stagnant. have a plan when you go to practice....dont practice aimlessly.
u guys are just a bunch of faggots that can't drum for shit. Tape is used to damper drums. It has a different sound than other methods of tamping, but maybe tape is more appropriate for his genre of music. If some of you are complaining about "uncontrolalble bouncing", then ur just a plain noob that can't control his snare for shit.
Since when does someone control their snare when playing? Last time I checked you control your sticks... Anyway, Ive never understood dampening, it takes away from the drums tone sometimes. But instead of relying on rebound to play, and trying to control it, its easier just to learn push-pull and then control each stroke. You get the must articulation and accuracy...
I don't care for EV, I wouldn't call them experts, but all he is doing is showing how they are played, not trying to make a clean solo.
As for the tape, well... apparently he's a teacher, so that could have something to do with his students. And that room pretty much forces you to put it against the wall. Come on now
Wow, you fail. Work on your left hand cause its slower than you right, it sounds horrible. And plus you slice WAY too much. If your going to make a informational video on how to drum, maybe you should learn to drum yourself.
It's when you "slice" your sticks into the drum and an angle like he did when he got faster. On an actual drum it gives of a horrible sound, your hand strokes are not even and it looks very unprofessional.
no a buzz is when you preaty much force multiple bounces from hit. Double you can hear all the bounces evenly, right. But with buzz rolls you hence the name pressing the stick into head to create a buzz. Then you alternate, speed up, and then theres a bee in your drum.<(^_^<)
I find that a good exercise to improve the double stroke roll is to practice accenting the second stroke , with the wrist at slower speeds and with the fingers when going faster.
Also "inverting" the roll for practice so that instead of being "RRLLRRLL..." it is played "RLLRRLLR
Ok well that's the easy way to play the double stroke roll, but really not the proper way. Drummers who do this properly do bounce the stick, but they use their fingers to CONTROL the second hit, instead of simple pushing the stick into the head. They can play a double stroke roll and make the second hit on each double actually sound louder than the first.
Yup. You can use only bounce to do a double stroke roll, but it doesn't work well on toms and surfaces with less rebound. You see how his sticks get very low when he goes faster? Just bounce won't allow you to play a louder double stroke without sounding uneven. Double stroke rolls shouldn't look like buzz rolls.
The "proper" way to do a double stroke roll does use bounce, but involves snapping the fingers back in to produce the second hit off the rebound from the first hit.
I didn't even know Polly Shore was still alive.

If some of you are complaining about "uncontrolalble bouncing", then ur just a plain noob that can't control his snare for shit.
lifprasir 2 years ago

Come on now

If I bounced my sticks they'd fly through my TV
railfreek 2 years ago
Bouncing is exactly what you're not supposed to do ... stroke each one! And I noticed your grip breaks down when you go faster too.

SLICE!!!!!! like crazy
mattmcmillen19 2 years ago 2
Wow, you fail. Work on your left hand cause its slower than you right, it sounds horrible. And plus you slice WAY too much. If your going to make a informational video on how to drum, maybe you should learn to drum yourself.
nwsrocks 2 years ago
What's "to slice" in drumming terms? Sorry, I'm brazilian, but I see a lot people saying that.
Peace
NeCtRiCkS 2 years ago
It's when you "slice" your sticks into the drum and an angle like he did when he got faster. On an actual drum it gives of a horrible sound, your hand strokes are not even and it looks very unprofessional.

bouncing double strokes...? thats a buzz roll..
AzzaDaChef 2 years ago
no a buzz is when you preaty much force multiple bounces from hit. Double you can hear all the bounces evenly, right. But with buzz rolls you hence the name pressing the stick into head to create a buzz. Then you alternate, speed up, and then theres a bee in your drum.<(^_^<)

he playys good but he keeping drumstick wrong
matomies7 2 years ago
thanks for the lesson.
I find that a good exercise to improve the double stroke roll is to practice accenting the second stroke , with the wrist at slower speeds and with the fingers when going faster.
Also "inverting" the roll for practice so that instead of being "RRLLRRLL..." it is played "RLLRRLLR
The1WithoutName 2 years ago
Ok well that's the easy way to play the double stroke roll, but really not the proper way. Drummers who do this properly do bounce the stick, but they use their fingers to CONTROL the second hit, instead of simple pushing the stick into the head. They can play a double stroke roll and make the second hit on each double actually sound louder than the first.
jwatanabe90 2 years ago 30
@jwatanabe90 resulting in a better sounding drum roll?
ihatebobsaget1989 1 year ago
@ihatebobsaget1989
