  • This is before steroids. So its actually quite good.

  • What's this? A professional bodybuilder that looks like a person?

  • @matiseq and he is nature... not like those bodybuilders of today they look big but they dont got true strength...

  • @matiseq actually body builders are proportional... Just big. Bodybuilders aren't saying "hey this is what you should look like", they actually do it because they try to reach lengths no one else has obtained and would rather have no one look like them. They want to be the best and that means not looking like anyone else. People need to stop comparing strongmen and bodybuilders, just because they both lift weights doesn't mean it's the same sport.

  • BY THE WAY - HE IS RUSSIAN!

  • @SkewLT Read history VERY ATTENTIVELY: his mother is Russian. For what reason he took Russian pseudonym? How do you think? And there is no such a country as pRUSSIA any more for a long time. Now everyone call this place Germany.

    "Prussians spoke similair to Lithuanians"?

These people have occurred from Aryans. Hitler was right, but he performed the will of his owners. And he used ancient Aryans symbolics which Russians used till a christening of Russia. Now think.

  • @hpho100 Fucktard learn to use Wikipedia..

  • I like his dyper.

  • 45 ignorant.

  • This man grew his muscles by flexing them.No weightlfting.read his books here for free:sandowplus.co.uk/sandowindex.htm

    (without the spaces)

  • I have read his books. This man grew his muscles by flexing them.No weightlfting except for maybe the beginning.Type in eugen sandow training in google and there are his books in the first page.

Muscle and strength by simply flexing maximally...Who would come to think of this?

  • ...did you really need the music -_-

  • Jay cutler could never do that back salto.

  • I watched him as a child. He was great. Too bad he passed away.

  • It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A!!!

  • georg lurich did a 5 man one hand support and was able to hold either 2 horses or 2 camels together with his arms from pulling apart.

  • BACKFLIP,LIKE A BOSS!

  • "Oooh man of zhe future. Zhis is Sandow, serving Colonel Venture."

  • I just wanna have a Hercules physique like this guy.

  • Its a lie its really dan severn age 15

  • I will never get those minutes back...

  • I know he is NOTHING compared to today's standards, but back then they didn't have strict regimes and they only ate what was in season, for someone to look like that back then was amazing

  • Must have been pretty embarrassing to get outlifted by a girl, even a freak like Sandwina. She even stole his name afterward, her real name was Katie Brumbach and she took his name after she beat him. It may have been around that time that Sandow started wearing diapers, I don't know if there is any connection though

  • Comment removed

  • @xchindit Bull shit. She wasn't half his strength. Plus Arthur Saxon was the stronger of the two.

  • wow! i don´t see the typical comments of bodybuilding ´s haters saying " its only steroid" or something else"

  • Sandow, is the godfather of bodybuilding, though the title of the strongest man of this era goes to Louis Cyr, whose heavy set body gave him the advantage. Sandow's dumbell workout has really helped me.

  • all that pressure on on his blood vessels = damaged blood vessel= stroke = drop the ego

  • @sciencestudent342 fuck you. get bent nerd. no one gives a shit about health....

  • Well i wouldnt call him strongest Arnold Schwarzenegger is stronger then Eugen Sandow

  • @SAYURU89 The title was just a hyperbole, and what makes you think Schwarzenegger is stronger?

  • @TraceurMeeka its my opinion faggot.

  • @SAYURU89 Lol, what a dumb idiot, your opinion is stupid and no one wants to hear it, go wank to Swarzenegger now, you fucking pussy ;)

  • @SAYURU89 lol, you do realise that this was filmed 80 years before Arnold Schwarzenegger's heyday, and 110 years before Ronnie Coleman's. i think for someone in the 1890's he looks pretty incredible and he founded modern bodybuilding.

  • This was the very first film ever! :o (excluding pictures of a horse galloping).

  • Most strongmen of his time were overweight large men, but he was ripped with a very low body fat. Women would actually swoon after just touching his rock hard muscles.

  • ...need to be able to do the 'classic' strength feats are out of choice for show. Then it becomes functional for YOU train them. As for 'oh what about my job it involves grip strength/heavy lifting' etc. Again, then train for what your job entails. If your job and recreational time/daily living do not require it, then it's contrary to 'functionality'. A bodybuilder needs only to look a certain way and trains very efficiently to achieve that look. They could teach YOU about 'functional'!!

  • *Sigh* To all the strength-training snobs who evangelise about 'functional' strength, please go back to science or philosophy class to learn about the concept of 'functional'. To say 'functional strength' begs the question 'for what?'. NOBODY needs to bend nails, tear decks of cards, or lift 2 men with one hand etc for sport of work. It's the antithesis of 'functional'. Training to build big muscles is, for a bodybuilder, supremely 'functional' FOR THEIR CHOSEN FUNCTION. The only time you..

  • @xtncord An interesting point, but like many people that pick at something to prove their own point of view, you take the word too literally, no one needs a philosophy class to know that in this context functional means being able to carry out the natural movements the body was made for, mainly manipulating your own bodyweight in space, which is something bodybuilders are sadly poor at.

  • 1:20 if she could twist a horseshoe like that.. then never let that woman hold your dick..

  • He is the King of Bodybuilding cuz in that time werent any steroids, they all competitors looked natural, not like todays messed up monstrosity shit

  • Well, I have to admit, considering he came from a time when there basically no steroids to speak of, yeah, that is one IMPRESSIVE physique. Not to mention that you'd be hard pressed to find too many bodybuilders who could do a backflip.

  • When I see any of his photos, the confidence coming off them almost throws me backwards, he just knew he was the shit.

  • Awesome!!! Partly why he became famous is because physique promoters of the day were looking for an alternative to the traditional pot bellied strong men from that era, Eugen Sandow was there man!!!

  • Some banging tunes back then XD

  • W porównaniu do dzisiejszych kulturystów , ba nawet do osób ćwiczących na siłowniach to Sandow wyglądem to cienki bolek był

  • He isn't the strongest, Pudzian was

    166,666 views xD

  • @edrvserBF2 Preuße.

Wie kömmst du zu deiner Annahme, er sei Russe?

  • Sandow war Preuße, war Deutscher...

  • Guess who took the film of this Historic Movie?

  • sandow used to work for the circus as a strongman at the age of 20 and thats where he got his name changed to eugen sandow by a protoaige by the name of attila eugene sandow' real name was friedrich wilhelm muller he was born in april 2, 1867 in konigsberg, east prussia these days prussia is part of russia

  • @shaneh1983

Prussia part of Russia? I do believe you mean Germany, what with how Prussia conquered a series of other Germanic nations to form Germany. Similar spelling aside, Prussia is most definitely not a part of Russia.

  • @tgtennis Yes, but original prussians were not german tribe, but belonged to baltic language group. They died off completely. There are other nations too, then germans and russians, you know

  • @Quex01

It was conquered in 1308 (had to google that) but it has been Germanic for centuries. Its people of any time after the mid 1700's should be considered primarily Germanic. Politically speaking, Prussia is inseparable from the founding of modern Germany, and should be addressed as such when referring to figures of Sandow's time period.

Attempting to associate Sandow with Russia seems to be part of a trend of crediting certain regions (Nordic and Slavic) excessively in terms of strength.

  • @tgtennis you dont need to give me history lessons, american

  • @Quex01

You say that like it is an insult. The usual "ignorant American," I assume. (PS - I'm also a European citizen)

Too bad it is you who felt the need to change it into a history talk. My post was aimed at addressing misconceptions regarding the ethnicity of Eugene Sandow, not dealing with earlier migratory periods.

I'd tell you to spend less time being affronted and more looking at the context of things, but judging from your bigoted last post, such words would fall on deaf ears.

  • @Quex01

That's true. The original Prussians (Baltic tribe) have been replaced bit by bit displaced by the Teutonic order who called other Germans and Dutchmen to settle this territory. Later on followed some other Europeans like Huguenots (French), but never Slavic people who were their enemies and heathen.

Trying to credit Friedrich Wilhelm Müller ("Eugen Sandow" was just a showbiz name), a man of completely German heritage, to the Russians is sheerly ridiculous.

  • you know back in the 1800 humans very acutally they were stronger then ever before because everything was hard to get but people didn't live that long either because of heart attach and strokes and also wars which other people created.

  • @Shazee083 Lol. You are probably right about them being stronger...at least they had more motivation to work longer hours because they could not get welfare, social (in)security or ssi. They probably died earlier because they worked their stronger bodies into an earlier grave.

  • tell me name of the song please

  • Savickas body was athelic a couple years ago.but now he is a fat man.strong

yes,but not a good body what to watch.I prefer sandow.Savickas is now 180kg.

    Sandow was only 85kg.

  • Все натуральненько так и расиво! не то что современные мутанты... Интересно, а наши современные могут сделать с места сальто назад?)

  • Засс рулит

  • Actually, Eugen Sandow died of complications of STD's. During his life time he had sex with many women and at some point he got an STD. After he died people were trying to boost his image by saying he pushed his car out of the mud and had a stroke. All of this information and much more is in the book "Sandow the Magnificent".

  • @thatuniform

STD of what ? Which kind ?

  • Great Video!

  • egg whites! huh! chick chick chicken!

  • mariusz pudzianowski

  • Who is the lady at 1.02 and approximately when would her film have been shot?

  • he is the king of bodybuilding he trains no anabolika no anything i say only ones:

    RESPECT

  • @turkonostra

I thought he was the first one to body bulid ?

  • @turkonostra are u sure? in those years testosterone just exist

  • @turkonostra lol men like him didn't fucking train bodybuilding, bodybuilding is only for show. But the strenght these guys had was very very functional not like todays bodybuilders.

  • He died prematurely in 1925 at age 58 of a stroke shortly after pushing his car out of the mud. He had to show off even at the age of 58

  • @gwatson101 This is myth, probably syphilis really cause his death, his wife bury him at unmarked grave, she and daughters never visit it, not allow anyone erect marker.

  • @gwatson101 im glad he died. ha ha . damn silly ass

  • @gwatson101 Actually he died of syphilis, the stroke story is just a cover story. He was sick weeks before his death. He didn't try to push a car out of mud. Thats just a stupid myth.

  • @gwatson101 not bad but jack lilane showed off even in his 90's

  • @gwatson101 What do you mean by prematurely? Surely the average age before death was much less than

  • @Phil0185 That is simply not true, its a false myth. We are not talking medevil times here, remember? Go check out old graveyards. If people survived childhood, they lived pretty old, up to 80's. Now people are much more likely to die to cancher or cardio-vascular diseases prematurely. Because they stuff their in faces processed crap, from wal mart or macdonalds, etc.

  • @Quex01 Holy sh!t yeah, I really screwed up that timeline. For some reason I was thinking 16th century lol.

  • @gwatson101

In 1925 age 58 was basically a senior citizen. Hardly premature. Most people didn't make it to 60.

  • that's how she lost her virginity

  • and he's weight was only 82 kilos.

    wow.

  • Sandow although quite strong was not the strongest man of his time. He was how ever a master of public relations and image. It was Louis Cyr, the Canadian strong man whom surrendered his title to Sandow because he could not beat Sandow.

This was a competition that Sandow avoided for a long time, fully aware that Cyr was much stonger then he was. Cyr's defeat by Sandow was the end of Cyr's career.

  • @benzman69 5'-7.8", 186 lbs. Eugen Sandow never defeat 5'-9", 315 lbs. Louis Cyr, no one ever defeat Cyr-san, Cyr retire when have Bright's disease, last contest is 1906, Hector DeCarrie tie and Cyr-san give him belt say "Fortissimus", Cyr-san die 1912 have kidney failure.

  • Sandow however was one of the first to have the look of a strong man in the modern times; unlike most of the strong man of the time whom looked more like a barrel.

If Im not mistaken it was an aneurism most likely caused by a stunt where Sandow pulled a car out of a ditch that ended Sandows life prematurely.

  • @benzman69 Is legend of push car cause death, syphilis is real cause, he have many lovers, his wife not allow anyone put marker at his grave, daughters not visit grave either, they are hostile at him, push car not explain their hostility, syphilis do.

  • The great Sandow is and will always be remembered as the strongest man, even if not entirely true he was an idol to many modern strong men never the less.

And as such deserves our admiration for being one of the first in many aspects, being strong not being the only thing!

  • The wife could take him, no danger.

  • mariusz pudzianowski is a cheater.

he takes a lot of steroids.Sandow

    was the real strongman and

    a bodybuilding icon.

  • mariusz pudzianowski is the best

  • He takes steroids!

  • @global2012 you are nuts.Sandow

made his first appearance on the London stage 1889.Anabolic steroids were first isolated, identified and synthesized in the 1930s, and are now used therapeutically in medicine to stimulate bone growth and appetite, induce male puberty, and treat chronic wasting conditions, such as cancer and AIDS.(wiki)Sandow died in 1925,before when steroids when even invented. You can say that Reg Park, Schwarzenegger,Gregg Valentino,Ronnie

    Coleman,Pisanrenko,but not Sandow.

  • Oh that wasn't directed towards sandow.I have nothing but respect to the man that started it all. That was directed towards zajefast, who said mariusz pudzianowski is the best.I must not have pressed reply so the comment would be directly underneath his comment.I know most of the history with steroids, and I'm not nuts.

  • @global2012 ok sorry man,but how

    the hell he used steroids?steroids

    where not invented even this

    time.

  • I said sandow didn't take them.I said marius does.

  • @global2012 yes agree buddy,

    mariusz is the biggest steroid

user in our days.not natural at

    all.

  • Now another guy who i look up to-and some people say he did steroids,i don't think so-is Steve reeves.I have picture with his autograph.

  • @global2012 maybe i think that too,but we can't say it for sure, because he lived 1926-2000. in his life steroids were popular. i personally belive that Paul Anderson was free of them but not 100% sure. But 100% free of them where Sandow,Saxon,Cyr, Apollon,Charles Rigoulot,Sig Klein and Estonian strongman Georg Lurich and the amazing mighty atom.
  • He had nothing on Louis Cyr, who was the strongest man. Many of his records still stand.

  • @Mac3622 Louis Cyr was fatass,strong

but nobody wants to be like Cyr.

    even today over 100 ago,Sandow

    still inspire millions of people

    over the world.

  • Many strongman competitors don't look like bodybuilders. Look at most power lifters, like Mark Henry. You don't need a six-pack, but you need strength. There are millions of people who are inspired by Louis Cyr.

  • the first real bodybuilder men thanks eugene

  • Fat don't count.

  • Im far from fat cockhead ! lolol

  • You are smoking crack .

  • and you smoke the skin flute you pink cape wearing homosexual.

  • i wonder is he actually could do all the stuff they say he can

  • wicked cheesy...

  • Sandow was not only muscle, he was naturaly genetik strong man.that kind of men is very rare..

He was realys a russian bear..

  • he was german.but yeah

    he deserves the title a

    russian bear.

  • You're both wrong. He was Prussian. It's in several of his biographies.

  • @synthapete Is true, he born Friederich Mueller at Koenigsberg, East Prussia 1867, Russian mother have surname Sandov, he use German spelling of it Sandow.

  • @alavernt His mother is Russian, her surname is Sandov, his father is Prussian, suranme is Mueller.

  • @TheKobayashisan

Sorry, but that's complete bullshit, my friend.

Trying to credit Friedrich Wilhelm Müller to the Russians is sheerly ridiculous.

"Eugen Sandow" was just his artist's name, not his real name - nothing more. Müller was of completely German heritage, so don't invent things to make him partially Russian.

BTW, in Eastern Germany are many small cities named Pankow, Wustrow, Güstrow...they have these names because of old Slavic tribes who setteled there...it's also not for Russians.

  • @hace83 I read David Chapman's biography of him, it tell us his mother is Russian have surname Sandov, German spelling is Sandow, you say david chapman is ridiculous, you are pitifully ignorant, you are hateful and quite ignorant too, you utter "osu no kuso" ("whale $h!+" is lowest "kuso" of all!

  • bodybuilder are not strong.they cant fight worth shit

  • no bodybuilders are strong, but they cannot fight for shit

  • haha i know one that can bt hes only 250lbs and all muscle hes been lifting for 7 years

  • Sandow is the greatest bodybuilder

    ever,because he didn't need steroids

    to upgrade his body.nowadays

    bodybuilders are mardy.they

    use a lot of steroids.Sandow

    was the man.

  • You're saying like all modern bodybuilders use steroids. If so, you are wrong.

  • not all,but most of them.

  • He was also about half the size of your average body builder now.

  • If you're interested in getting a realistic view of strength and development, I recommend looking for some books wrote by Earl Liederman. "Secrets of Strength" and "Muscle Building" are two that I'd highly recommend you read if you wish to find out how athletes like Sandow became the icons of physical culture.

  • Is now or in the 1890's?

  • @strongmensecrets what was his height and weight in kg and cm?

  • @strongmensecrets yeah its 1980

  • @ievaramanauskaite savickas maby won in 2010, but Mariusz Pudzianowski is the beast. 5 times champion and has high stamina. He is the best worlds strongest man competator that have lived. I respects him more!

  • he might be the father of modern bodybuilding be he sure isnt the father of graceful posing

  • Sandow was a fine athlete, with a physique vastly more preferable to those of the current steroid shooter-uppers-body-bloaters. Can any of THEM do a backflip?

  • Actualy Yes

  • @stevevandien yes lol kai greene

  • @stevevandien God your so ignorant. Look up a guy called 'timbahwolf' on YT and watch some of his video's.

  • @stevevandien None of them train to do backflips...

  • @stevevandien kai green can do PERFECT backflips

  • 420 pounds 190kg

  • 420 pounds 160 kg

  • Sandow was the grandfather of strongman

  • Sandow and Saxon are modern

    legends,they were masters of sport.

  • The Legend

  • Too bad he died from trying to pull his car out of a ditch

  • Was most likely from syphilis

  • you are correct. but, you can`t say that a legend like sandow died from syphilis. ah even back then they were spinning

  • @elite99900 That is just tale, scholars think syphilis really kill him, his wife and daughters hate him, not allow anyone put marker at his grave, they not angry of him push car, angry he have many lovers.

  • what if we sent one of are juiced up men back in time.

  • Watch the Terminator.

  • hes a mixture of a body builder and a powerlifter, body lifter lol

  • W'hy don't you show a photo of Sandow lifting 2 men or even better a film clip?

Compared to the men of today he isn't that strong or well built.

    Some secrets.

  • Excuse me..? Do your research before you smash on sandow..The guy could do a legit one arm chin with every finger on each hand individually, he weighed over 200lb. He could deadlift 700+ with one hand, lift over 300lb over his head with one arm. Find a single man today who can lift 300+ over his head with one arm. He had 18+ inch arms legit, find a bodybuilder or powerlifter with 18inch guns at 200lb and steroid free. He had 16inch forearms. Again find anyone his size with forearms that big.

  • Did you personally witness any of these amazing feats? I'm just asking for some proof.

As to his physique, sure he was one of the best in his time. I like today's bodybuilders better. To each his own.

If anyone thinks that Sandow's success is the result of some secret they can train that way and show everyone how it's done.

  • Thats simple not true.

  • trust me man i'm not against what you saying but they exaggerated often back then so you cant be so sure.

  • @luthmhor This is exaggeration, is Hermann Goerner dealift 727 use one hand not Eugen Sandow, Sandow-san Bent Press 264 use one hand, is untrue he do 312, his arm is 16.9", chest is 47", waist is 32.7", weigh 186 lbs., Dr. Dudley Sargent of Harvard measure him.

  • I cant remember where i came up with the 700lb and some of the other stuff, i know the arm measurement is legit, check the sandow uk website. And he could bent press over 300, im 99% sure i remember that correctly. Oh and he weighed over 200lb at his heaviest. I know goerner did the 700+ one arm deadlift. I think i was just pissed that someone was dissing sandow, who was stronger than many many modern bodybuilders pound for pound.

  • Sandow-san not do Deadlifts, not recall any 1890strongmen do, 6--0.5", 220.5-260 lbs. Goerner-san much bigger of Sandow-san, life statue of Sandow-san have 18"+ arm, and 38" waist, is inaccurate, 16.9" is correct arm girth, he claim weigh 210, no proof, strongmen tell many lies then or now, photos indicate he not vary so much of size after he mature, 185-190 is actual weight, Arthur Saxon is 5'-9", 200 lbs., bigger of Sandow-san, beat him of Bent Press, they lift 264 lbs. 312 is exaggeration.

  • @TheKobayashisan Dr. Dudley Sargent of Harvard measure Sandow-san when young, Edmond DesBonnet of France measure him when middle-age, he have 17" arm both times of reliable measurements, arm is never 18".

  • Many of the pouindages were exaggerated. You must remember that this was not an exactly measured sport. These guys were in show business and it was good publicity to exaggerate. It was this factor which led to the proper regulation of lifts with the British Amateur Weightlifting Association (BAWLA). Interestingly, many of the old strongment lifts have not subsequently been bettered which tends to inducate that they were exaggerated.

These guys were still very impressive though.

  • SilvaSkaduwee is quite correct, all 1800's pro strongmen exaggerate lifts, some exaggerate greatly, e.g. Charles Sampson is charlatan not real strongman, Sandow-san expose him and easily beat him, is how he gain initial publicity, Vienna, Austria have first World Amateur Weightlifting Championships 1897 have genuine weight, Wilhelm Turk win, 1912 Karl Swaboda is best, his records, e.g. 441 lbs. Press off rack unequalled until 1950's by Paul Anderson, Sandow-san too small equal 330 lbs. Swaboda.

  • He did lift 2 men :34
