  • THis is the most insightful video I've ever seen in my life on youtube.I came just to learn about The element Lawrencium and I ended up learning about the discoverer his inventions and how some of those inventions made impacts around the world before during and after WW ll.I'm just shocked.

  • That was the nerdiest tie I've ever seen.

  • Lr Has such a short half life from Lr-252 will last ~360 ms to Lr 261 last 40 min Spontaneous fission.

A 3mcg californium target, consisting of a mixture of isotopes Cf-249, 250, 251 bombaded by B-10 or B-11. the electrically charged transmution recoiled with an atmoshpere of Helium and were collected on a thin copper conveyor tape then which was moved to place collected atoms in front of a solid state detectors.

  • very scientific video!

  • that tie is priceless, just way too awezome!

  • I want that tie.

  • I find that the best teachers that i have had look like the stereotype of that teacher (ie:my shop teacher was a short, stout man who had a mustach and was pie bald) I think the professor must follow this way of thinking. I would love to learn under him.

  • my last name is Lawrence xD

  • i like radiation

i am hoping to make a atom bomb to kill my ex

  • Interesting info!

  • When I was in High School, this was the last element on the Periodic Table.

  • love the tie professor :)

  • Reminds me of moss from IT crowd

  • Wow I'm surprised how people can be so creative that they can imagine such an apparatus without having a foundation to base it on except for a goal in mind. It shows just how capable the human mind is.

  • I hope that who ever posted this video can find it! I'm doing a project and I want to know if it's okay that I use part of this video.

  • Does anyone know what speed electrons actually travel at? I always thought that they go the speed of light, but I'm sure I am wrong.

  • @madjimms Pretty much the speed of light in big accelerators. Thing is you can never quite get there. You could get an electron with a millionth of a joule of kinetic energy in it, and it'll be going close to the speed of light. Then you get another one with the energy of a bullet, and hey, it'll still be going close to the speed of light. That's why physicists don't really talk about how fast the electrons are going in particle accelerators - that info's just not particularly useful...

  • @Chronosaur But isn't light just a wave of electrons?

  • @madjimms No, it aint. It's true that when electrons jiggle around, they disturb the electromagnetic field and make waves in it - ie light - but electrons and the electromagnetic field are two separate things.

However, those electromagnetic waves are kind of lumpy... unlike normal waves, they can only carry off lumps of energy. You call those lumps photons....

  • @madjimms

    no, light are photons

  • i dig the hair :)

  • to pswft10: The Japanese were also working on an atomic bomb (two research groups). These people, who hand killed 200,000 civilians in Nanking, would have had no qualms about using it on the US. There are no longer any 'innocent' civilians in war. We are all at risk.

  • Its sad that the intelligent professor whose all videos I watched thinks that the atom bomb was made "to save their [the scientists' who worked on them] countries". The atom bomb was utterly unnecessary and it did damage countless times then that of what Japan that time could do. I'm just glad that if any of the Asian countries with developing nuclear projects decide do drop an atom bomb, it won't be on my country, and somebody may get his just-deserved.

  • awesome hair dude!

  • Nice jacket.

  • i love his tie it's got all the elements on the periodic table =D

  • Love these videos. Interesting.

Althought they sometimes confuse me alot.

  • lol.. you nearly tricked me.

  • You all are mad awesome. Thank you so much for the digestible chemical information!!

  • @holon67 Not really, The germans were very close to having a useable atom bomb of their own. They were developing a long range high altitude bomber that could fly higher than our planes and not be shot down so they could deliver their atom bomb on us targets.I research UFO technology (ha ha) but in studying German nazi era science I've seen pictures of experimental devices and blueprints that were declassified. We got the idea from them and made it work.

  • @holon67 In the heavy water experiments The Germans were experimenting not just with cold fusion but explosive fusion of deuterium. The did detonate a bomb that exhibited some reaction but they had not perfected the chain reaction. I don't know if that one was deuterium, tritium, or uranium based. Eventually The Germans would have had one and would have used it if they had not been defeated. Our bombs saved american gi lives not the country so I guess there is some truth in what you said

  • "Our bombs saved american gi lives"

...by killing hundreds of thousands innocent men, women and children.

  • It's very ironic how this was the first link that I clicked on when viewing this video from my youtube email subscription. After viewing this, I feel that much more enlightened, thnxs.

  • Coolest. Tie. Ever.

  • ac?

  • you have 140 ,so fuck off

  • WOW! Yeah because this video was all about his hair!! That's why he's the genius. lol

  • That's some serious hair. I guess the "einstein look" is back.

Looking forward to CERN making the Earth implode!

    Yay!

  • I like his periodic table tie..

  • rofl dint even notice

  • did his brain exploded before few years ?

    joking .....

    look genius

  • Tornado hair

  • The hair is actually an extension of his brain. The slightest contact with a comb or pair of scissors would mean certain death.

  • I laughed so hard! That comment is hilarious

  • lmao

  • digg the leather jacket

  • wow

  • He has just traveled in time, thats why his hair looks so funny.

Thats what happens when you use an outdated flux capacitor

  • haha! nice...that is why Einstein was a genius and had such hairs! i guess... !? lolzzz

  • I can understand he is a very intelligent man, but that does not excuse him from at least dignifying his appearance to appear somewhat groomed.

  • thats kind of offensive... I like his hair the way it is! he can stile it however he wants!

  • Of course he can "style" however he wants, but appearing kempt in public is only common courtesy to those around you. He appears blatantly disheveled

  • Shut up. The professor has a pretty unique hair, lets compliment it instead of criticizing something different.

  • No kidding, If it weren't for someone different most of the world would be fat and watching football. Long live The Professor!

  • super video

  • were justi n the year 2000 getting a fixed haircud to AVOID looking the maniac professors in films! should be simple

  • Is that a hat?

  • COOL

  • His hair serves two purposes, the first is to hide the fact that he has an enormous brain, the second is to shield that enormous brain from high energy waves and particles. Its more like a hat than hair.

  • Yes Yes Yes i understand now, wait i though we were takling about donuts....

  • booring like the owner of the vid hahaha!!!!

  • MEGA HAIR AWAY!

  • This guy obviously has not researched the haircut.

  • Considerations about things like clothing and hair and popular culture get in the way of intelligent thought.

  • Shut up..... for all you know he does consider his style, infact his a clothes look expensive idiot

  • Lol, you don't even understand what I meant. I guess you're the idiot.

  • when i look at his hair, i cant listen and think about any electons, chemistry, phisics or w/e he talks about...he is soooooo cute ))))) Looks alot like Einshein because of that hair and glasses ))))))

  • Great Tie... Where can I get one?

  • Einstein wannabe lol!!!!!!!!

  • Original ideas, I hope, are more plentiful in Chemistry and Physics than they are in the music industry. I haven't heard anything new out of the music industry for over 2 decades now.

  • Looks like kyle from southpark.

    old version btw

  • A lot of hair

  • since when are you guys youtube´s partner ????

  • We all know the hair is the source of his power

  • awesome hair is awesome

  • HOLY CRAP

  • HIS HAIR is the new element

  • he like to look like Einstein?

  • It was a poor attempt to look like Einstein

  • omg that guy is awesome

  • That man's hairstyle makes him ver compitent.

  • I think the key to anti gravity technology lies within this guys hair.

  • i remember when eveyone was talking about the hadron colider

    ahh those were the days

  • I can't stop looking at his gray afro!

  • I love his tie.

  • I think he looks like that so when he invents the time machine he wont need to change his hair when going back to the 70s.

  • 5 stars just for the hair :)

  • can any1 watch ids? i cant :(

  • totally awesome vid. You took a less known atom and made it very interesting

  • illuminating

  • awesome hair awesome tie awesome guy

  • his tie is boss

  • and the hair

  • He was wearing a tie? o.o

  • They are far more advanced then they say , already build a timemachine and took that freaky hairy guy from the 80's

  • ROFL!

Yeah, i would be quite surprized if the guy didnt look that nerdy, and that hair.....

  • Check out The Professor's explanation of Schrödinger's Cat on our other channel (dedicated to physics), sixtysmbols

I know he's a chemist, but that doesn't mean he can't talk about a bit of physics too!

  • Look at his Lawrencium Hair

  • The electrons don't come out through one of the tubes. They come out of the side of one of the dees, where there is a step change in the radius. The tubes are insulation round a pair of conductors which deliver the radio frequency accelerating voltage to the two dees.

    Bill Dixon

  • „„„

    (o )> II

This is a chicken. Help him take over youtube AGAIN!

  • The hair feeds on his bright brain.

  • Love the tie!

  • stupid nerd shit.... waste of money

  • I'd not say it is a total waste of money. One day it will be used for powering warp engines.

  • hahaha lol

  • Stupid nerd shit enabled you to use electricity to power your computer to open up your browser to use the internet to go to you tube to use your keyboard to type your comment. In case you haven't noticed nerds have made up all the technology used today

  • Now i know what Don King would look like if he would be white.

  • This chain text is so poorly written.. Also, how will you die the same way as she died? Did she have her bed in the midle of the graveyard?

Well anyway, love the video, very interesting stuff.

  • 1:39 He said a few inches across... wouldn't he have used centimeters across? :P

  • he looks like something has exploded!!

  • A fantastic lecturer I had the pleasure of seeing in Nottingham univeristy. Keep up the good work.

  • Sweet hair

  • I couldn't even focus on the video because of his hair lol... Awsome!

  • funny how many scientists cant understand the basics of bad hair, periodic table no problem..hair wtf ?

happy to be bald looking at that birds nest hat head

  • He could have at least talked more about Lawrencium and showed as what it looked like at least. I have no idea what that Element is and it's my first time hearing it so I was wondering what kind of substance it is...*sighs*

  • but he clearly said there were only a few atoms made

he can't show you anything, because you can't see anything

  • Oh ok...that's kind of disappointing to hear *sighs* oh well ;)

  • Mhm, would have preferred to have him talk more about Lawrencium - it being the title of the video - rather than the basics of how the CERN project works, which could have been done in another video.

  • the professor is rich. look at his leather jacket

  • true

  • awesome hair

  • That guy has the best hair EVER!!

  • Ilike his hair styl

  • no leas esto porfabor

si no escribis esto en 10 videos tu mama se va a morir es 4hs

  • Where can I buy a tie like that?

  • Great video.

  • Cut your hair you will never be Einstein! :P

  • holaaa

  • BADASS HAIRCUT

  • Mr.Beans?

  • lol.. look at his tie

  • I want a tie like that too.

  • What tie? I couldn't see anything else but that HAIR!! Looks like he stuck his head into a cyclotron!

  • That guys is a play-uh.

  • ...but im not smart

  • Is it me, or do smart people tend to look crazy.

  • Interesting video.

I gotta say however, that is most definitely the hair of a scientist.

  • Enstien cosplayer

  • 50% of me was thinking about what he was saying.....

The other 50% was thinking..... that is sum head of hair........

  • I find it implausible that the copper accelerator that looks like two "D"s back to back (one mirror imaged) could possibly have worked. With electron speeds approaching 'c' and a path of, say 4', would mean:

≈186,000 mi/sec x 5,280(ft/mi)÷4 (path length) x2 (# of times per rev. current changed) =491,040,000 changes of current/sec! Obviously there was no technology at the time to do this! First time in 30+ years, I've done anything like this!?!? What do I know? I'm just a dumb painter!

  • To answer your post:

I don't think the first accelerators could not achieve anything close to 'c' and it was only later that the accelerators were improved and became bigger that you could accelerate it that fast.

Therefore this accelerator is plausible and is prob perfectly real.

  • That's a smart man, but also a Einstein Wannabe (the hair-style)

  • You can't assume that.

  • Yet people into science and technology get labeled as nerds or geeks. I just don't get it.

  • This guy is smart and interesting though really. I like him.

  • Lol

  • This guy is the coolest person on Youtube! That's fact!

  • Look at this anarchist convo!!!!!!! click me!

  • dammnnn.. you gotta love his hairs!!!
