cars today are much safer than the "good ole' day" cars. They tested a 1955 Chevy at 40mph head on collision and compaired it with a new Chevy. The crunch area entered more than half way into the driver compartment in the 55...not so with the new one. You can say what you want about modern cars, but they are safer than they ever have been in our history. More weight doesn't equate with more protection..not back then.
Makes me think of pre-K days...when my dad brought home a new '55 Bel Air 2 door sedan with V8, Powerglide, radio, power steering and heater--he loved it, and always said he missed that car once he traded it. (At least until he got his first new Cadillac in '74...)
They sure oversold the newness in these spots, but in all fairness, the 55 Chevy was a major departure from the first generation of postwar Chevies on the '49-54 platform...and it must have worked, they sold 1.8 million of them.
I wish GM was still motoramic...the Rover 75 looks and feels motoramic though! all with show car styling,glide-ride alround independent suspension and the worlds smoothest 6! and it was all new for 1999....
This was considered to be low cost motoring in 1955??? Obviously our standard of living has significantly gone down the drain in America over the last 55 years. Now all that we have are econo-boxes and SUVs = Stupid Useless Vehicles to choose from. If you go for a Japanese car, you'll have to be satisfied with a car that's powered by a weed whacker motor that looks like an egg on wheels.
