  • She sounds lovely until she starts screaming but he really does over do it

  • I really don't like how the guy sings the first verse. Its like he lingers on every syllable way too long. But when Holly starts up, it's magic. As is the harmonies between the two. She's a gem x

  • Man this is the best cover of this song I've ever heard. Seriously, it sounds great, better than Metric's. I love how you guys sing the chorus

  • 4 stars video

  • For someone who heard this version first, I think the emotion was powerful and I sat there in awe watching it. Very well done.

  • ok I am sorry but I start this song at 2mins 15 seconds I love holly she never fails to wow me with her amazing voice she is not over the top but still has so much emotion and passion in her performance, the guy was a little odd sorry just my opinion!

  • @Evilpixieshake : whatever works for you...odd is a favorite of some of us, but different strokes - no harm, no foul

  • @dakrolak totally agree :) the world would be very boring if we all felt the same, he is very passionate and a damn more talented than I could ever hope to be x

  • @Evilpixieshake Aren't you the best! This was very nice to come back from vacay & see!

  • I don't know the original, but I love this version and Scott Matthew's emotionally singing (maybe because I'm a woman).

  • ...i just want her version!!! :P

  • no... oh no... her voice is amazing. but still no.

  • too over the top, sorry but i'll pass

  • 18 people are not being kept still *sigh*

  • I love her voice

  • Cool, in case they ever do record it let us know ! x

  • @dmtr4 will do!

  • Can I find this track sang by them recorded anywhere ?

  • @dmtr4 - as far as I know they have not recorded it yet, but both had said several times after when I saw them again that they'd like to

  • I thought this was AMAZING. Dramatic or not. I thought Scott Matthew was superb, as well as Holly. His "over dramatic"-ness went along soooo well. Maybe the video itself threw some people off by looking at him. Just play the song, close your eyes and listen as if it was the first time you'd ever heard this song. This was a cover, not intended to be repeated, but reinterpreted. I love this and Elliot Smith's version as well. They're beautiful in different moods.

  • you can't sing elliott smith songs like a phony motherfucker or it just sounds pukey

  • Gosh she doesn't even need a mic...

    Amazing. Wonderful. Breathtakin'

  • wowwww. amazing

  • Holly's voice reminds me of CocoRosie sisters. And Scott.. what could I want more? :)

  • love her voice but don't like his and dont like the parts they sing together:S

  • very sensual indeed. amazing soulful cover!! Bravo.

  • Where do I buy HER music???

    Please.

    Peace.

  • @Akatomed - she has a website: Holly Miranda Dot Com

  • @dakrolak

    Thank you VERY much.

    Peace.

  • @Akatomed also on itunes.

  • The girl sounds good, the guy sucks.

  • you can tell by the way she's holding the mic that it's not just about performing for her, she really cares about what she's saying. i love her voice, this is amazing!!!

  • is there anyway to download this version of the song so i could upload it to myxer? i would absolutely love to have the chorus as a ringtone. this is probably the most tragically beautiful song i have heard in such a long time. i have just been sitting here and hitting replay for the last 3 days. <3

  • i've enjoyed alot of the covers on here, this is the only one that I honestly think is shit. These twits are ruining a perfectly beautiful song with their pretentious, melo-dramatic crap and the dude in particular is annoying as hell. He think he's such a profound artist with his stupid beard and over-active eyebrows. He doesn't understand half the loneliness and pain this song is trying to convey, he practically screams "hey look at me i'm edgy and flirting with a girl who could be my daughter

  • Just for the record I'm a huge Elliott Smith fan and I don't usually criticize people's interpretation of his music. This cover just pissed me off for some reason

  • I'll put it this way. I never cried when I listened to the Elliot Smith version...and I am bawling right now.

  • I originally heard and fell in love with the original of this song and I simply don't understand the people who say that this version is worse. I don't think it is better either, because what I hear is Scott Matthew and Holly completely making it their own. I feel the two versions complement each other, and Elliott would have loved to hear his song interpreted this way. It in no way undermines or takes away from the original. It's quite simply gorgeous!!

  • @Skirtage: Thanks, I feel the same way, and don't take to heart any criticism, with art you either like it or you don't - but it is when you deem to criticize something, you should offer something constructive -- thanks again!

  • there's too much talk about how scott matthew sings too emotionally, but yet doesn't it fit the song? and these two singing together equals magic. stop sucking on the tit of elliot smith just because he died, you should appreciate a person's music without having to consider things such as if he/she is dead or not.

  • This is the best version I've heard of this song. It was the first version I heard, it could be a first impression kinda thing. I listened to the original and all of these remakes on the side and this is the best. In my opinion of course.

  • Is his arm broken?

  • @SpaacemonkIE : his hand was - yes at the time

  • To all those that have inartfully described this as over-blown melodramatics, I take quite an exception with that description. Any singer can interpret a song, finding confluence between what is true to them and their style - and that of the person who penned the song. I've a jazz pedigree and think it should bear the character of the person interpreting it and seem true. This for me was that.

  • This is a true representation of the music Scott makes, and is far from melodramatic, quite understated. Listen to his other stuff - I beg you. Also while I love Eliot's version, which this is not, nor do I think it was intended to be - I quite prefer this version over the original. That is to my taste - as the original seems to me like heroin laced melodramatics. His lyrics are terribly good, and even his lilting fey style is charming, and I mean no disrespect ~ to each his own obviously.

  • The original is not melodramatic at and where in the name of the ever-loving fuck did you get heroin from? The song is about alcholism, not heroin and even that is missing the point. Elliott's voice in the original is subdued, as it often was, and he lets the melody and lyrics speak for themselves. The performance in this video, on the other hand, is overwrought and dismal. The male singer tries so hard to re-invent the song that he strips of it everything that made it special in the first place

  • @breeeegs: Thanks for schooling me. Really, condescend much? Covering another's song is by nature a reinterpretation, all I was pointing out to you, was that the artist need not make a carbon copy for something to be worthwhile. You don't like it, if that is the case - not sure why you spend so much time defending the original. I didn't say the song was about heroin but see you read about as finely as you respond. You don't like it - but it need not insult you, nor should you take it personally

  • "His lyrics are terribly good." Terribly good? Are you fucking kidding me? His lyrics were, and still are some of the best of all time. No modern songwriter has the emotional honesty and sheer power of Elliott Smith's music. Bob Dylan and Nick Drake are the only ones who come close. You sound like some kind of oxford professor sitting in an armchair sipping sherry and sniffing. You're that condescending, and that misguided.

  • @breeeegs : well I suppose I could dramatically reinterpret comic book dialog with a baby stroller in the back when I want to give my armchair sherry sniffing/sipping a rest. Srsly, you invoke Dylan/Drake and fail to mention Cohen or Waits --- as I said before and without an ounce of condescension: different strokes. if it bothers you that much, why not channel that into something else. Sorry it isn't your cup of tea, but your rabid defense and flame-worthy attempt at angering me are childish.

  • First of all Tom Waits is nothing compared to Elliott Smith and even Leonard Cohen isn't as raw and personal as Elliott Smith. This song is one of my favorite songs of all time. Obviously you're entitled to your opinion, but what annoys me is that you would insult the original song

  • A little more dramatic than the song called for... It's supposed to be melancholy and touching, not... a loved one just died in my hands and told me I'm worthless. Crazyness. The girl has an AMAZING voice though.

  • OUCH!!!!!

  • fantastic!!

  • just search "Happy Feet - Funniest 2 scenes" that sums it up

  • Overdone. The lyrics are so evocative that such an over-dramatized style of singing is inappropriate.

  • love love love. beautifulamazingness.

  • i love the voice of the girl

  • this is really bad, the guy is terrible. the girl is OK

  • in my mind it´s great and totally no overdoing of the lyrics :D

  • Leave the boy alone he became a man that day!

  • don't like it...too slow

  • ohh myy goodness. totally overdoing every single lyric. Sounds like a funeral.

  • @gibson724 haha.. well said !

  • ah. well, i guess i'm comparing it to much to Elliott Smith, because when i do, all i hear here is a drunk guy with a beard who cannot sing.

    just saying.

  • He's amazing.

    :D

  • this version is ok but the arrangement kinda reminds me of karaoke or something. i think they have nice voices but they utilize them funny in this cover. instead of sounding depressed they end up sounding like Dracula was playing and singing the song. good voices just wrong cover in my own opinion.

  • I feel that.

  • jackass!!!

  • i love this cover of between the bars.

the voices of scott matthew and holly are very sentimentally.

    thanks for this song.

  • well scott matthew is good, maybe great. but elliot smith version is, in my opinion, far better. why? it´s simple, not so dramtical like matthews version, it´s a little bit over done, and hey: elliot smith unfortunately "passed away". i like his music, so his version is unique!

  • Damn!!!!! It brought me to tears!

  • I like this a lot better than the original, though the original is still really damn good.

  • Очень нравится(=

  • ha nice little twist different must say love her voice [=

  • Wow, they're so good! Holly sounds like Sara Bareilles mixed with Regina Spektor! Fricken awesome!

  • she's so raw!!!!!!!!!!

  • whats that on scott's hand?

  • превосходный

  • i want to say something about it ....but fuck they had it down so fucking good

  • def a new twist to the song ...i like it odly

  • incredible.

    truly really amazing

  • She sounds like cocorosie!!!

  • Beautiful.....

  • that was soooooo pretty....

    *connects into Itunes* lol

  • damn this is really buggin me out how good this is

  • the delivery is perfect fuck!!!!

  • SUPERB!

  • Is scott wearing a sock puppet? WTF is that LOL!!!

  • Her voice sounds reminiscent of Jeff Buckley. Scott Matthew is a bit too... theatrical, in this video, for my taste.

  • My thoughts exactly. My favorite part about Elliott was that he was genuine, he didn't put on a face or do any of this theatrical stuff.

This vid is still good though. Lots of talent on that stage.

  • Good God her voice is so good. So powerful. This cover gives me chills every time.

  • ahhhhh so good. She can't do wrong!

  • Scott Mathew and Holly...

    Best combo ever!

  • holly will you marry me please?

  • ugh so beautiful

  • Right!

  • Holly Miranda is the best!!

  • AMEN!

  • I love Holly M.

    She's a good singer!

  • she is an extraordinary singer! I love seeing her perform! I'm sad that I didn't capture more the first time, but my memory card was full! (hate that)

  • that was exactly my thought!

  • That was great, the chorus got me all shivery.
