This is a remarkable film that touches the heart of true Americans. My favorite part is the end when she lets him know that she is poor, black, and maybe ugly but by God she is here. Whenever I see this film I know there is a God.

Spielburg changed the main storyline of the book b/c the world was not ready for Alice Walker's vision in 1985. Woman falls in love and leaves husband for husband's mistress. The movie would have never drawn a mainstream audience. Profit comes before artistry every time. Whoopi was fearless to play this role as her first film.

It didn't come out and say in the story that she was a lesbian. I think her character's spirit was broken and she was so alone that she took love and comfort anywhere she could get it from. I don't remember the book describing anything explicit but I do believe it was implied that they made love. Whether that meant making out or whatever is left up to the reader. It has been a while since I read it though.
