This may come as a surprise (considering that I'm a "northie") but I am strongly in opposition to implementation of Hindi as our national language (which, by the way, it is not). There are far richer (in terms of heritage and culture) languages than Hindi in our subcontinent. With widespread forcing of Hindi, these cultures will eventually perish. While I certainly wouldn't say that KannaDa is a culturally poor language (far from it.. It has a very rich heritage and history), it is't justifiable
It is ironic that many regions of present day Karnataka were carved out of the erstwhile Madras Presidency on the grounds that the administration situated in the Tamizh heartland were stalling growth in KannaDiga dominated areas and that KannaDigas (and Andhrites and Malayalis) had little say over their respective regions. Today those same KannaDigas are refusing to acknowledge that other cultures and languages exist in their mulitfaceted state.
I don't know how much economic or political sense it makes to give these regions autonomy, but it is imperative that atleast the Karnataka Government takes steps to ensure that these cultures do not die out in their zeal to make Karnataka into a monolithic state for Kannadigas... after all, the KoDavas and TuLuvas are the sons of that same soil. They are not foreigners to Karnataka and certainly not to their native areas.
I'm a gujju and in my state we have a separate region called kutch which has its own language and culture. If today a kutchi became famous, I should not expect him to give recognition to his Gujarati heritage because he is a Kutchi and thus his language and heritage are Kutchi.
If I do at all expect him to mention Gujarat as his heritage, I must first analyse how much Gujarat and Gujaratis have respected his language and culture. If we have not respected them, I should not expect it back.
But when someone from the aforementioned communities rises to a top position in their field, there is an almost militant expectation from them to recognize kannada as their heritage.
My point is not to divide. What I'm saying is that only if you can nurture their language and culture as a part of Karnataka's own heritage, do you have any right to stake a claim over them as icons of karnataka.
Nurture TuLu, KoDava takk and KonkaNi as your own before you want them to be identified with ur culture.
I'd just like to point out that Aish is a TuLuva NOT a Kannadiga. her heritage is TuLu NOT Kannada.

Tulunadu was a historical region in what is southern Karnataka and northern Kerala. I'll give you an example of this so you can understand. For example, there is a region in modern Spain called Catalonia (Barcelona is the capital) the native people speak the Catalan language rather than Spanish. But they are still ethnic Catalans even though they were born in Spain.

This may come as a surprise (considering that I'm a "northie") but I am strongly in opposition to implementation of Hindi as our national language (which, by the way, it is not). There are far richer (in terms of heritage and culture) languages than Hindi in our subcontinent. With widespread forcing of Hindi, these cultures will eventually perish. While I certainly wouldn't say that KannaDa is a culturally poor language (far from it.. It has a very rich heritage and history), it is't justifiable

It is ironic that many regions of present day Karnataka were carved out of the erstwhile Madras Presidency on the grounds that the administration situated in the Tamizh heartland were stalling growth in KannaDiga dominated areas and that KannaDigas (and Andhrites and Malayalis) had little say over their respective regions. Today those same KannaDigas are refusing to acknowledge that other cultures and languages exist in their mulitfaceted state.

I'm a gujju and in my state we have a separate region called kutch which has its own language and culture. If today a kutchi became famous, I should not expect him to give recognition to his Gujarati heritage because he is a Kutchi and thus his language and heritage are Kutchi.
If I do at all expect him to mention Gujarat as his heritage, I must first analyse how much Gujarat and Gujaratis have respected his language and culture. If we have not respected them, I should not expect it back.

My point is not to divide. What I'm saying is that only if you can nurture their language and culture as a part of Karnataka's own heritage, do you have any right to stake a claim over them as icons of karnataka.

I'd just like to point out that Aish is a TuLuva NOT a Kannadiga. her heritage is TuLu NOT Kannada.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Kannadigas. Some of my very good friends are Kannadigas and I air the same views with them.
All through my 6 year stay in karnataka, I noticed that Kannadigas, who form the majority in karnataka, don't give much of an impetus to TuLu, konkaNi or KoDava Takk.

@bamithable *Tulu language has lived as step-daughter under 2 non Tulu state after Independence. *Tuluvas were the first to telcast non official(8th schedule) serials & Tv channel of its own in Tulu language. *Tulunad was majorly ruled only by Tuluvas only until Treaty of Mangalore. *Tulunad has seen 20% migation of its people every year ,still Tuluvas are majority in Tulunad . *Did you know Tulu language has remained unshaken even though it never had a state of its own.

She is born in Karnataka and yet never ever responded to the causes of Karnataka or Kannada at national/international levels. Most Kannadigas possess this attitude in their blood and DNA(hard to change). She did not even act in Kannada movies to show some respect to her Mother/Sister tongue. We call in accha Kannada such folks SULE MAKKALU. Imagine a Telugu or Tamil native doing this to their mother tongue- you wouldn't be alive. God save Kannada land!!

@ultimaz100 First of all She isn't an ethnic Kannadiga. She might have been born in Karnataka but she is ethnically Tulu. Tulunadu was a historical region in what is southern Karnataka and northern Kerala. I'll give you an example of this so you can understand. For example, there is a region in modern Spain called Catalonia (Barcelona is the capital) the native people speak the Catalan language rather than Spanish. But they are still ethnic Catalans even though they were born in Spain.

ha so much laughable i remember a few years ago some world kannada conference was organised and aishwarya rai was invited by the kannadigas as chief guest.She refused saying she is a tulu person not kannadiga and more importantly she doesn't know kannada,the same kannadigas are today bad mouthing her just because she snubbed them.Look at how kannadigas change their attitude.anyways i am not into language controversy but one should remember english is the de facto official language of india.

yes even i know how many people speak kannada in bangalore.Bangalore speaks mainly tamil others speak tulu konkani telugu kannada spoken by minority in your own state's capital dude and about tulu people just like malayalis they are there everywhere.but you kannadigas are a minority even in your own state only 50% people speak kannada in karnataka
