it's quite inadequate to compare an Aston Martin with the Land Rover if u get what i mean. Both are great but yeah, u need more skill to drive an "Akira Martin" :P
That was nuts! Total limb independence, groove, dynamics, timing, chops, and whatever else. When Yamaha came out with the Akira Jimbo signature snare, I was like who is he and why does he deserve a signature snare. This recording pretty much sums it up.
Most drummers impress by their pure technic but he impresses by the music and u dont even need to notice his incredible technic....ill totaly give up drumming
Godly.....so....godly. Jazz fusion of this magnitude, I feel, will never be widely appreciated here in the states, and lots of times, most of these gifted people find fulfillment with session jobs, but the fact that they are so underrated and unnoticed by many of us is plain as day. I wish I could be rich, and televise my own Jazz fusion festival as a national broadcast and show off people like Jimbo or T-Square or Marcus Miller, etc., then people would be blown away....
he used to play in a band with Tetsuo sakurai since 1979, the film Akira's main character was named Tetsuo.... it is still to this day one of the most famous English Japan anime cartoon films. i believe it was released in 1988
Not only an absolute master of the drums but a brilliant song writer & an inventor?!. Honestly, everyone who loves to drum should keep learning and practicing but don't fool yourselves...This guy is in a class all his own! Pure Genius!
even using the shell of the drum to play @.@ now thats the first time ive seen someone to do that. akira jimbo jsut surprises me everytime no matter how many times ive seen him play
The idea of playing the shell of a drum actually predates the drum kit. It's a technique used in afro cuban music to play what's called the "cascara" pattern. I respect Jimbo not just because he draws on this music for inspiration but because he actually pulls it off with authenticity. :)
YAMAHA trigger (DT-10, DT20, or DT-30[discontinued]) with YAMAHA sound module, watch the Akira explain this on Behind the D.S. '92 from my channel too...
Akira RULES! He did a clinic in Halifax N.S. Canada and I did not get a chance to thank him, thus thanking him here, thanks Akira, fantastic drumming, well appreciated!
