  • Outstanding video. Very concise and good terminology.

    I learned! Thx

  • What other dies do you need besides the standard 9 x 18 dies?

  • @stevec6977 That's it. 9x18mm dies and you're gold.

  • @ammosmith Can i use lead bullets which made for 9x19 luger and use them for 9x18 cartrige???

  • @DinoPal No. The 9x19 uses a bullet of .355" diameter and the 9x18mm uses a .365"-.366" bullet. By our standars it would be a 9.3mm in all actuality.

  • Brilliant. Simply brilliant.

  • @Swagman00 Thank you!!

  • Thank you sooo much. This will save me some serious cash. I paid $24 for a pack of 50 at Gander mt the other day. The saddest part is that's the cheapest in town.

But just one thing. It's Makarov, not Markerov bro. Haha, it's a little querk, I know. Its just sandpaper in my ears

  • @1979rdg $20 a box of 50 is what I pay in Portland, Oregon for Hungarian made Fiocchi which has reloadable brass cases which are loaded really on the Wimpy side 950 fps. I have worked up loads for my CZ-82 that chronograph at 1125 fps which brings the load up to +P standards which seems safe in my CZ-82 which is all steel. Do Not use anything this Hot in the Aluminum frame FEG 63 EVER! I use Accurate Arms #5 Powder and worked up .1 grain at a time shooting 10 Rounds at each step up. GO SLOW!

  • how much does that lathe cost

  • @sirjacobthe8 Around $45

  • how can people say the 9x18 makarov ammo is hard to find or expensive, I live in southern virginia and can buy it all day long at my local wal mart for $20 a box of 50

  • @1979rdg Reloadale 9x18mm is hard to find. When you cast for it you can load a box of 50 for around $2

  • @1979rdg The whole problem is finding brass cased 9x18. Sure you can use steel case, one time use 9x18 Wolf or Ulynosk but why? Brass case ammo will always trump steel in accuracy, wildcat rounds and cost (long run).

  • @Swagman00 Depends on what you're firing it from. Brass doesn't run any truer in my Ak's than steel. For me, why spend the # for brass. To each his own.

  • @NowCryHavoc Fair enough. An AK on the other hand is designed to work no matter what. It may have even been designed for steel cased ammo. Rough and rugged is a common design parameter for the Russians. For the Czech made CZ 82 though, I have to differ.

  • @ammosmith Is it feasible to hand swage makarov bullets? I've watched your swaging videos but makarov is a little more rare that other calibers so I'm curious about the availability of dies etc for it. My cz 82 has polygonal rifling which is supposedly a no-no for cast bullets.

  • @unknownperpetrator You can but you'll have to special order the dies from CH4D.

  • can you do a vid for resizing 6.5 to 7.35 carcano?

  • @geiswiteb Unfortuneatly I don't own any of those calibers.

  • @ammosmith thx for the makarov vid anyway. having trouble finding the brass

  • Well, I've finally DROSed a Bulgarian Mak, so I guess I'll be putting these tactics to use. I've wanted one for a while and a local FFL was blowing them out for $199. I couldn't resist... :D

  • thank you so much for the link ammosmith!

  • @bjizzle123 Anytime...we usually have a video for things like this.

  • perfect video, very helpful!

  • This video was incredibly useful. Thanks.

  • Very informative. Thanks.

  • I have always wanted to get into reloading, but thought it to be intimidating. I was wondering what you would reccomend to a poor man who would like to start reloading. My current pistol is a P-64 that takes the 9x18 you're talking about in this vid. I've also heard that some spent casings can't be relaoded due to primer problems is that the case with Makarov amunition?

  • Berdan brass is not good to reload nor is steel or aluminum cases. Regular 9mm NATO can be converted easily. You can get started for about $150.

  • just got a CZ-82, dies, now I can load it up : ) Thanks commercial ammo was never an option no matter how cheap, yuk!

  • thanks a million for this video!! just subscribed, and i just bought a makarov

  • It takes the taper out of the case so it will fit over the .360" trimmer pilot otherwise it will not fit. Also if you expand it then resize it the case will come out dimensionally perfect and will not crush when a bullet is seated in to the case.

  • Hi,thanks for your videos!i wanted to ask u,can i shoot a .380 round with a 9mm gun?i have this doubt this i checked that a 380 round a 9x17mm round and a 9mm round is 9x19mm, so?can i shoot a .380 round with a 9mm gun or viceversa?9mm round with a 380 gun?thank u in advance for your reply.

  • No. The .38- is a straight walled case and the 9x19 is a tapered case. The 380 is a 9x17 Kurtz and that makes it 2mm shorter than the 9mm NATO so headspacing will be too far off.

  • oh i see, thanks for kind reply, i understand the round would be too short, what about shooting a 9mm round in a 380 gun? would that work or the round would be too long? for just 2mm?

  • It's also wider at the base. The 9x19 operates at about 32,000psi and the 380 at about 25000psi

  • so what u mean is that it cant be done ,right? i cant shoot a 9mm round on a .380 gun, right?the thing is that i want to buy a hi point CF .380...but i have a bunch of 9mm luger rounds and i wanted to know if i could still fire them on a .380

  • There are very few guns that can, one that will is the Astra Model 400 or 600. Other than that you will be taking a big risk IMHO.

  • wow, thanks a lot man! u really helped me out, u know a lot about guns!!!!, thanks again, i know now who to consult then hehehe. really ma, thank u again. GREAT VIDEOS! i'll give u 5 stars on everyone of them.

  • Another great vid from ammosmith! Great information. Thanks.

    5/5 and fav'd

  • Thanks!

  • Thanks for the video!

  • Great vid!! I am getting the following to get me started on this for my makarov : Lee Challenger Breech Lock Single Stage Press Kit ,

Saeco 2-Cavity Bullet Mold #940 9x18mm (9mm Makarov) (365 Diameter) 100 Grain Round Nose Bevel Base , RCBS Powder Trickler, Lee Production Pot Four Furnace 110 Volt , Lee Carbide 3-Die Set 9x18mm (9mm Makarov) , Saeco Bullet Mold Handles..... I just need a cheap case trimmer. What model do you use ( I could not find it on midway)?

  • Try the Lee case trimmer. It's cheap and easy to use. Remember to run the 9mm NATO through the 9x18 expander die before you trimotherwise it will not fit on the trimmer pilot.

  • Are you talking about the Lee Zip Trim? I watched some vids on it and it looks like a great little product. Do you think the cutter will hold up taking a full mm off each shell. I talked to my local range owner and for $100 he will hand count 5,000 9x19 brass for me to trim. I will remember the expander die first (and I hear you need to remove the old primer too before you can run it thru the zip).

Well, Off to Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot in Kentucky for the weekend. Thanks for the help.

  • I use a power drill and their 9x18 trimmer pilot.

  • nice i was looking into getting a 9x18 makarov cal hand gun and this answers the question is ammo available and priced right i was looking into a cz-82 and wondering if any one has any trigger time on it and is it a good buy for self protection and plinking 5/5

  • i figured you can do this, now i know how.

    thank you!

  • Excellent - Thank You.

  • How much does all the reloading equitment cost?

  • For a basic setup with dies from Lee about $125

  • Awesome, cheaper than I thought, Thank You. How hard/easy is it to reload, I have no experience in reloading.

  • It's easy but there is a learning curve.

  • Can you put a 9mm luger bullet in a makarov case?

  • Thanks for posting your conversion video to my p-64 review. Every shot I fired in that video was using winchester 9x19mm brass that had been sized, trimmed and converted to 9x18mm makarov using your method.

  • I own a Makarov P-64. A Winchester case of 50 rounds costs $30 here in OH. I wish I had your knowledge. I don't know how to reload but I wish I can learn. Great video. Thanks.

  • What is the best way to mark the case? I tried using a sharpie and marking the head stamp but, I noticed that it wears off or rubs off easy. Anything better? I have herd of some using nail polish but how do you keep it out of the priner pocket?

  • I try to use nickle plated brass to keep it visibly different than the 9x19mm stuff.

  • I watched this video and your other video of Basic reloading trimming pistol brass. I bought the Lee Makarov 9x18 trim length Gage and do the whole thing on my hand drill like you show on your videos. It works great!

  • Very Useful

    Thanks for making this video

  • NO BULLSHIT this conversion WORKS. I now have in my hands a dummy round 9mm speer nickle cased marked but loaded with a hornady xtp 95 gr makarov projectile. Trimming nickle is a bit rough but this conversion is awesome. The dummy round I made dry cycles great. I can't wait to load some nickle cased 9mm makarov. plus 9x19mm brass is cheap. THANK YOU AMMOSMITH

note you cant use 9mm brass that has already been sized by a 9x19mm full length sizer

  • three syllables ma-kar-ov. No mack in makarov

  • Sort of like tomato then.

  • which case trimmer do you recommend for this?

  • I use a .35" pilot for initial trimming. However you can use the Lee trimmer (cartridge specific to the 9x18) as long as you DO NOT FL resize after running the Parabellum through the flairing die. Once you trim then FL resize and reflair for bullet seating.

  • Very interesting, thanks. On the trimmer, what are those things in the line of holes? I thought the trimmer grinds the excess brass into powder, but it seems it comes off in a spiral.

  • The brass comes off in little ribbons and the steel rounds are caliber specific mandrels.

  • awesome!

  • Great vid!

  • Thanks! I have several more hundred to make yet.

  • i hand load both 9mm and 9mm makarov and some other calibers, your aproach seems quite reasonable I think I will finally be able to fabricate 9mm makarov nickle plated brass, something i have wanted to have for a long time.

  • try gunbroker its alot like ebay but for guns and gun stuff. granted all firearms must be shipped to your local FFL dealer but you can find almost anything on that site.

  • After firing the 9x19 and resizing to 9x18 Mak, after how many reloads would you say the brass should be retired?

  • Good question. I think the converted brass will last a very long time. 9x19 is designed to withstand much higher pressures I have yet to have a converted case to fail...I have some on it's 8th loading.

  • couldn't you get a 380 makarov barrel and rechamber it for 9x19 brass and then just load a makarov level 9mm seated back far enough to fit in the magazine?Regular depth 9mm wouldn't fit in the magazine so you wouldn accidentally run full tilt 9mm in your makarov and you wouldn't have to trim brass or size it

  • They make a barrel for the Makarov in .380. This conversion if for those who prefer the 9x18 or who already have. Ammo is getting more expensive and a lot of people are turning to reloading/handloading to offset costs and availability.

  • dont really need to trim 9mm brass you can just expand it and seat the bullet deep enough so that the round fits mak magazine and it works fine the slide will be slightly out of battery but 9 case head is very strong so it works.I found this out when i got tired of trimming brass.Just be sure to use mak load data not 9mm data.

  • You should trim the case. The bullet headspaces off the mouth of the case. If you don't you run the risk of a case rupture.

  • I thought that too but it didnt happen to me i believe the strength of those little 9mm cases coupled with the lower pressure load makes it unlikely to rupture the case.

  • Perhaps. I'm a stckler for precision though. I get some good results out of my 9x18mm. The real isue is again head space. The trimming not only gives the correct headspace but uniformity between rounds. I don't bother sorting the brass so I know that there are variations in case length. I eliminate that through the trimming process.

  • true the trim would mean uniform crimp and better accuracy definitely.

  • The 9x18 is a neat little cartridge. It is very similar in performance to the German 9mm Ultra. With ammunition costs and availability being of real concern, being able to make a cartridge is very valuable.

  • The Lee trimming products are not good for this conversion!! At least not for me. The 9x18mm length gauge puts scratches on the inside on the case. I'll need to buy a trimmer like Ammosmiths in order to properly trim the case. Maybe I am doing something wrong but that is the problem I am having doing it. I'm thinking because the brass is thicker than the 9x18 that the Lee trimmer won't properly fit inside the mouth of the case!

  • Run the case through the expander die then trim. Size the case as your last step. This should take care of the problem.

  • Honestly...if I had to picture what you look like in person, I would think like a guy wearing a cape with a bullet on it, flying through the air solving handloading problems. It's a bird, it's a plane, no it'

s AMMOSMITH!!! TAKE THAT PESKY MAKAROV BRASS!!!

Anyways, thanks for the information, that seemed to help. I will post results likely in the form of a video response. Thanks and have a good weekend, Ammosmith.

  • Thanks! You too. Remember to mark the brass with a sharpie or something to keep it separated from regular 9mm. No sense in going through all that work to lose a bunch.

  • The trick is to take a regular 9mm trimmer and trim it down a millimeter.

  • Also neck it up to .365"

  • Any better choices for projectiles in the 9x18mm Makarov? Hornady XTP's are EXPENSIVE!!!

  • No problem! We now have our Forum up and running now too.

  • Very good video! I have been using Starline 9x18 Mak brass. Nice to know i can gather up all of the 9mm Luger and not have to buy anymore. Thanks!

  • Thank you for watching! Being able to be nearly ammunition independent is a good thing.

  • cool video, i reload 9mm but don't have a mak but i might get one if i could reload for it

  • The 9x18 is a very neat little bullet. It's power falls between the .380 Auto and the 9mm Parabellum. Brass is hard to get since most of the Russian ammunition is steel cased. Making your own will reduce wear on the chamber and extractor.
