@Cahva : i hear you on this, but i would call this era thrash before i would hardcore.still punk as fuk,and i will always love it.i like some of their "crossover" stuff aswell, but hey thisis my roots, and i m punk 4 life.so the metalheads can take it or leave it.i dont really care.but this stuff is TRULY CLASSIC
Don't tell me that punk rockers are idiots. DRI released "Reaganomics" (are killing me) 30 years before we really had a chance to witness the failures of supply side economics. Now we're all grown up and wise and we've finally come to terms with what some punk kids in Texas were screaming about in the mid-1980's.
Back when there were true punks, now we have little posers and rappers taking our fashion.Leather jackets and mohawks only look good on punks and metalheads, fuck posers.
They changed hardcore forever. Rocket speed songs....awesome. I saw them a few times before they did the "metal" thing in the 80's, definitely one of the better bands of that era.
This earliest DRI is the best. Some thrashbands got metal (part of what was called crossover in the 80's) and lost their aggressive raw power (for me anyway). Early Corrosion of Conformity was the same. These songs come close to early Bad Brains in intensity. Also some of the fastest vocals of any band.
I think they dubbed over this video. No way the audio quality could have been this good on a bootleg tape from 1984. Also, the band's movements don't quite sync up at certain parts
I'm amazed at the quality of video and sound here. Not much classic punk left of this quality. I think it really illustrates what a lot of people don't know about punk rock: it wasn't about mohawks, heroine addicts or skinheads. It was raw energy and emotion. The guys looked more like your math teacher than social misfits and the folks in the audience went on to become dentists and lawyers.
Smart guy in the back clapping. Jeez.. 2 years later.. Who headlined this? Cro-Mags, Murphy's Law, President Reagan? Were there free sedatives at the door?
I grew up in the late 80's, I listened to DRI everyday back in highschool. In the mid 90's my punk band, Jedi Mind Trick, opened up for DRI on the Full Speed Ahead Tour, Corpus Chisti TX. One of the best days of the good ole days.
@koopatroopa187 Look closely at the darkness in front, it is a seething mass... people are stage diving and going crazy... the camera angle is just isnt capturing the riot...
Excellent sound, must be strait off the desk..., so much better than most of the old footage from this era.... Cheers
its the same story as a lot of hardcore bands back then SSD tried to be a hair metal band at least DRI kept some punk feeling behind it one of the most underrated bands ever
@chrisheid31 SSD went from being one of the very best punk bands to being possibly the worst band of all time after they changed their style to metal. God they were awful.
DRI are the best American live punk rock band in the land. The only band even close was the Ramones...dring the speed drummer years!!! Spike is th emost underrated rock guitarist without exception.
@RedHarleyRider1 Fuck yeah dude. That shit was fucking sick!.. Moshed like fucking crazy when they played Thrashard. The band before DRI that covered Cyco Vision by ST was also pretty sick!
I love it, dude they are so fucking sick live! I saw them during their definition tour. Very glad I got to see them and meet them they were at the local headshop the day they were playing in El Paso TX. Cool guys and good show!
I'll back the thought with SOD's united forces. Ya know? Dont hate is my feeling... we're all here- together- for a reason... no need to hate the new DRI- cheers...
Dont want to turn this into a war and all about punk/metal. I like ALL DRI's catalog-start to finish.
PPL mentioned-the only other way to progress would be to slow down. My opinion- only other way to speed up was to go grindcore like ND.
As a musician- you want to round out your sound and not be pigeonholed. You dont want to be lableled as 1 style. You'd have to ask Kurt and Spike but that is why the change.
My feeling- go with 'tear it down' from crossover- that is what they would want.
