He has in common with every musician I've heard born before 1850,(no matter what his musical temperment),this quality of treating the perceived downbeat as something to be played with in a jutting manner which brings the music out spontaneously...as opposed to the modern way of playing everything on the beat as beautifully as possible,which leads usually to mundane results.
