by the way Rush was the first to call them the "Democrat" party. and I think the fact that a phrase from Rush Limbaugh being co-opted by the House Republican Caucus and then used in a response to one of his brilliant questions is what's really pissing off Matthews. The "Democrat Party" term is attributed first to Wendell Wilkie in 1940. Rush Limbaugh was not the first to use the term by a long shot.

Thanks, I stand corrected. But don't you think it's Rush's well-known usage of "Democrat" as opposed to "Democratic" that's really irking Matthews? Namely I don't think Matthews is thinking about Wendell Wilkie's usage of the word when Issa keeps incorporating it, and even if he is, it's the fact that the lexicon of Rush Limbaugh (not Wilkie or anyone else) is being used on Matthew's show is what's really getting under his skin.

Much of this nonsense comes from the old "Democratic Republican" party (1792-1824) founded by Thomas Jefferson.

In that now-defunct party name, as in most English phrases, the adjective precedes the noun, hence "Democrat" received the "-ic" adjective suffix to become "Democratic."

"Republican" is both a noun and an adjective, etymologically speaking, but the noun "Democrat" needs the "-ic" to become an adjective. When modifying the noun "Party," the adjective form "Democratic" is correct.
