Cenk should get a job at Air America...Whoops sorry, that went out of business. Does he make any money doing this? I mean the views here were only 4,120 at last count.
At the moment I'm writing this, the views are at *gasp* 4,120 views. At the very least, it should be at 4,121, seeing as I watched the vid after you wrote your half-assed comment over 20 minutes ago, so its obviously a glitch. Besides, views mean jack, so your point is moot.
Interesting how you make fun about the number of views of a TYT video, taking in account that their videos make it to the most discussed list everyday, and they often pop up in the home page under the "Videos Being Watched Now" section.
How do you explain that a handful of republicans were able to kill almost everything that the dems set out to do? When Bush was president, a hanful of republicans could pass every major piece of legislation that they wanted. This just shows that the democrats are in fact the minority in America. There was a CNN poll showing that there are in fact far more republicans in America than there are democrats, almost 2 to 1. America is a center right country like they say on Fox news.
But even if thats true its irrelevant in government. The Democrats will pass agendas that the people don't agree with if its corporate. Things like Ben Bernackes reappointment. Almost all the country left or right is in favour of campaign finance reform. That won't pass either.
It is nothing about the public being right or left. As all the bills are not about right or left.
Do you really want me to explain politics to you? Do you know what a filibuster is? Have you heard of reconciliation and a thing called cloture? That's how. Republicans never gave a shit about bipartisanship, which is obvious when they vote against bills they've cosigned. That's un-American. The only thing they care about is getting re-elected. Meanwhile the middleclass is reeling and pointing at Obama when the blame should be on Republican obstructionists.
Why can't they point the finger at Obama as well though? He's got a Senate majority which WAS filibuster proof and he's accomplished absolutely nothing. Sure the Republicans are evil retards but Obama is pretty weak sauce and should be held accountable too.
Well look at the argument. You're simply saying government is functional so long as there exists a filibuster proof majority. That's not democracy. What we're seeing in todays politics is UNHEARD OF. Having two or three Democrats straying from the base on some issues isn't a bad thing, nor is it a sign of weakness. Assuming they haven't been bought out by capitalists, it shows free thinking and that they're open to other ideas. (CONTINUED)
(CONTINUE)The same cannot be said about Republicans, who constantly vote no, even on issues they agree with. How can one claim to love this country, but then obstruct ideas that they agree can potentially help Americans? Republicans have the power to help us out of this recession, but to them politics is more important.
@dukesmaviddicky I agree. Unfortunately, its all about political gain, rather than doing whats best for the American people. If a Republican votes for a bill put forth by the Democrats, no matter how beneficial that bill may be, they are crucified by their peers. It makes it very difficult to ever get anything accomplished. I fear it's a broken system.
PS. Don't take my argument the wrong way. It's not to say I think Obama is immune to criticism, because he's not. I have plenty of my own gripes with him, but most of it stems from him not throwing every conceivable bill of his into reconciliation (if that's even legal), but it doesn't have to come down to that. If it does, this country is in for a world of hurt. If Democrats decide to play the filibuster game on the next Republican president, you can bet on endless years of limbo.
I think the Republicans' grand scheme is to get the Democrats slowly creeping towards conservatism. Although they are already in a Centrist mindset, Republicans will still laud them as being "far liberal" unless they become just like them.
Lower the age of running for office down to 16, I want to take a shot at this. Yes, many other punks will probably get in, but I'll turn the Democrats from spineless cowards into Conan the fucking Barbarian.
@blingbling65943 Thanks; I thought for sure some older guys would come swooping in to go "Huh huh huh, grow up, dumb kid!", 'cause you could swear there's something messed up with adults talking down to kids who may have a valid argument.
You say that till the tobacco lobby offers you a job somewhere sweet doing little work and rolling 6 figures to party and bang chicks with... Young people would sell out more come to think of it!
Maybe, maybe not. Perhaps we should have a test for young people to join? To settle this matter, so we know they're qualified to represent?
As well, why would I go with money? I fucking hate tobacco. I'd record that call and post it for the world to see. I don't care about money being offered to me.
Come to think about it, I'd take the money, and not do a thing to help them. So what if they campaign against me? Go ahead, it's me versus Lung Cancer-inducing psychopaths. I wonder who'll win
But seriously if you do that you will never be elected again. They will run so many adds saying your basically a terrorist. Just look at this Obama stuff. Some people literally want him impeached. You just have to show hicks an Advert with the American flag in the back ground and they will be heckling you and your anti-tobacco comments with bizzare chants like "Commie" , "Radical"... The only way you can power though that is to be someone like Bill gates and run. :(
Obama and the Dems need to come out and make these guys famous. Make it common knowledge to the American people that we can't get anything done because the Republicans are obstructing EVERYTHING!
The GOP is resorting to underhanded, unethical methods to abuse the system, betting that it's just to complicated for most to understand. And they just might be correct.
Major news outlets have abandoned real journalism, and real reporting.
We are NOT a democracy, we are a democratic REPUBLIC. If we were a democracy, we would have a referendum on every issue. We are a democratic republic because we elect representatives via a vote.
Republicans run on the premise that government cannot work,so they go into government and make sure it never works, and the idiots that vote for them I guess can't see this.
This is a democracy. The majority should win every time. No exceptions. If the minority gets to run the country how will the people ever get what we need?
"A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine." - Thomas Jefferson
Its the exact reason for the constitution, to protect the minority from the majority. It is also why we are a democratic republic, ideally the way it should work is the more knowledgeable/capable of our people are elected to better and protect the conditions of the rest.
Without the filibuster, the Senate becomes irrelevant. The founders designed the Senate to be a deliberative body. The House was designed to be a representative body. If the Senate rules are changed to require only a simple majority, it will just duplicate the work of the House in representing the will of the people.
Why just eliminate the filibuster? If that is the decision, why not eliminate the Senate entirely?
No, the founding fathers did not put the filibuster in the Constitution, but they designed the Senate to be a deliberative body. They DID put in the Constitution that Senators would be appointed by the state legislators thus removing them from the will of the people. The Senate is NOT meant to be a representative body.
I have no particular love for our bicameral legislature, but we should understand that the filibuster is the only thing that makes the Senate necessary.
No other democracy on earth has what we call The Senate. Britain, France, Italy, Australia, Japan, Norway, Canada, All of them are governed by their version of the House of Representatives.
In America we are governed by 10 or 11 Senators, who are all bought and paid for.
The Senate in Canada are not elected, they have no real Veto power, they can only delay legislation passed by the House of Commons in rare and exceptional cases.
Nothing like we have here in America where 9 or 10 Senator control the workings of government.
@blingbling65943 Canada has a Senate. The UK has the House of Commons and The House of Lords. The US would benefit from mandatory question time though.
Canada, the UK (the other countries I've mentioned) do not have a legislative body like the U.S. Senate that has the real power to stop legislation from the House.
They do not have the same thing we do, where the power of government is contained between 9 or 10 men.
I'm Canadian with a dual UK citizenship. I'm well aware of how the governing bodies work in both countries. Stephen Harper (1 man) has shut Parliament down until after the Oylmpics, that's some pretty serious power. Read up on the Chilcott Inquiry currently being conducted in the UK to assess power there. Fundamentally the limitations of power have more to do with multi party systems and ability to call elections thus putting leaders in a more precarious situation.

Cenk:
How can you call this a "normal nomination"?
Craig Becker, like The Bama, is a labor "card checking" radical,
who is against Right to Work states.
And, the fact that he is counsel to the mega unions, SEIU & AFL-CIO, would doom any nomination.
It would be interesting to have Mr. Becker try to explain, why someone who wants to rig the rules to favor unionization should sit on a panel that it suppose to enforce fairness in union elections.
If democrats had had similar rules 99% of Bush nominations would have been stopped. Bush nominated radical right wingers who often had interests directly opposed to whatever office they were given. The only difference is the right wing knows how to fight and the left does not.
The left wing (in america) is a joke. Your country is going down the toilet and they are trying to reason with retards who openly admit to wanting everything to fail for the next 4 years. Morons.

God's OWN PARTY will continue to PWN Obambi and the Democraps and retake Congress in filibuster proof majorities and culminating in the installation of Sarah Palin as America's GREATEST President of ALL TIMES! Palin will deliver the DEATH BLOW and deliver the FINAL NAIL in the COFFIN of the Democraps and Liberals! The GOP and the Libertarians will be the only two parties left. The DEMS will be extinct like the Federalists, Whigs and any weak little party that can't win an election!
And you are stoned to death if you are gay, and stoned to death if you show more than your face and you're a woman, or if you get raped. In saudi arabia, a woman that was raped is stoned to death. It gives interesting opportunities, but their minds are back in the stone age, no pun intended
@ecwaufisxtreme: your regurgitated lines were still somewhat funny months ago, but are getting a little stale and predictable. Be original and creative again, too many people here are bored with this.
Well, it does make sense, but not in the way you mean it.
I have seen this many times within work. Some people get called in for every little error they do, which people they dont want to get rid of dont, and after a while they fire them with the argument "look at all these warnings/papers/complaints" etc on that person.
That 99% of the stuff they have is irrelevant stuff that they dont call in other people in for dosent really matter unless the employee is in a union...
cenk is spot on with this one- i agree, 55 seems a good number for the filibuster. all this obstructionism with nominations gives the democrats every reason to push health care and much more through reconciliation until the system is fixed- besides, most americans still don't really know about the 60 vote and wouldn't complain about a simple majority vote.
democrats should just bring back the old filibuster rules.
allow filibusters, but with a catch. filibusters have to be continuous. the minute you stop speaking, the filibuster's done, and the bill is forced to a vote.
that way, it's fair for both sides. the minority get filibuster powers.. but not in a way that lets them abuse and obstruct the process.
(unless some republicans have inhumane willpower to talk for days on end..but i seriously doubt these filibusters would get pasta a few hours)
true cuz most of them are old as shizz so old they probably sat on the dayum toilet longer than most of us have been alive and probably attended school with jesus aka Big J himself and.... if your theory is correct eventualy these 60 70 80 year old douches need their senior citizens nap... and BAM we win! lol
It's the political game of let them get nothing done. And Republicans play it every time we have control.
It's simple really, stall, delay and try to kill anything dems do. The country gets in a rut and most voters being retarded will blame whoever is in power and not those at fault.
Republicans pick up seats.... they have been doing this for decades.
listen I've been waiting around for more then a year, if any Republican Teabagers come to my town they are gettin' dog shit thrown at them. I can't make them vote but i can chuck a mean bag of dog shit.
IF you voted for Obama thats one vote he cant do it alone its the senate and congressmen/women that are in there fucking shit up... democratic and repukelican alike.
Actually, the number of filibusters is evidence of just how leftist the proposals of the Pelos-Reid-Obama triumvarate are. The head of the Service workers union is from the same vein. Also, if and when the filibuster is removed or reduced, it's the end of the Republic, and freedom as US citizens have known it, and the begining of degenerate democracy. And time to prepare the monastic repositories of knowledge for the coming dark age.
Actually, considering the number of filibusters is evidence of what Obama pointed out addressing the House Republicans. They've made him out to be so much more Leftist, Socialist, and outright Evil, that they can't possibly vote with him or work with him on anything, or else they'll lose votes from the people that they've just convinced.
There is no real Progressive movement amongst politicians right now. There's barely even Liberals. You have centrists, right wing Lunatics, and Bernie Sanders.
I would never vote GOP for anything They are for themselves and how much money they can make for themselves while in office. Dems need to get some cojones and take a stand and if not I will vote another democrat in that shows promise. What needs to be done is not let some asshole be your senator in YOUR state that does not represent you as a voter... and is looking to make a career out of fucking the american voters. Get out and vote these assholes out... and stop bitching.
Republicans are doing great job. They work hard to stop Obama. You got to admire it. Dems on the other hand suck hard. I think I'm going to vote for GOP next time because I hate incompetence more then anything else.
Friction supports burning crosses on the white house lawn... If you look at all his posts. What cracks me up is he tries to talk down about Obama yet all he can ever do is post on the net and bitch about Obama by calling him a manchild (whatever that means) I guess it means to him a well educated president who is faithful to his wife and holds the highest seat in these united states and they have to resort to name calling because they have nothing else...(shrugs) who knows.
Those far left loony unions? You know those labor rights you enjoy such as weekends, minimum wages, eight-hour days, etc? Well, they were all won by ordinary people in unions.
Do you even know why you dislike unions? Corporations are generally opposed to unions because unionized workers have pull, and that's not good business for owners. Remember that when fox news (owned by News Corporation) is going on about the horrors of unions.
Friction is on the side of corporations and their CEO's bonus checks I mean sheeesh... The fact Unions help the workers you know the actual people doing the work get better pay better benifits etc. and not the fat cats bitching behind a desk. I mean who wouldnt love a team and/or union backing the employee if issues arrise I mean if friction had his way we all would be paid shitty no benifits and the fat cats would own our children for future slave labor. swing low sweet chariot.... lol
they're using glenn beck " logic"...."i'm just asking questions ? "...and then these clowns use the fact that the question has been asked as evidence....or proof that whatever dumbass claim they're making is true...the answer or facts become irrelevant....the continuous bombardment of questions becomes the conviction of quilt
It's so funny listening, that nothing can be changed because republicans are against everything now, because it's true, but then again it's not like in Finland when nothing gets done because no real questions are brought up or suggested :D
I'm a fan of this show, but there's one thing that bothers me. Cenk constantly attacks the corporate domination of politics in this country, and at the same time raves about the wonders of capitalism. Capitalism enables a small number of people to accumulate most of the wealth, and they naturally go on to control the country. Money and capital is power, and the majority of the population has nothing. The majority will always be alienated under capitalism.
His point, and many have tried to make this point before, is that actual capitalism is the last thing most corporations want, the idea that it is "capitalism" is just corporate propoganda...most corporations in this day and age wouldnt be able to exist without massive tax cuts and subsidies, all on the backs of the middle and lower class, even much of the "upper class"...its all a scam, Cenk seems to actually get that.
I agree with your point about large corporations not wanting the free market, but corporations have controlled the government for ages. It's misleading to speak of the government as some sort of independent entity. John Dewey said politics is the shadow cast on society by big business, and I think he was absolutely right.
Liberals often speak of the injustice of large wealth inequality, but mass inequality is inherent in capitalism.
That's generally true however, I think you'll fnd if you watch the show enough that Cenk is a fan of WELL REGULATED capitalism which tends to address the disparity you mentioned more effectively but is (sadly) a far cry from what currently exists in the US.
I believe capitalism is dehumanizing and oppressive regardless of the form it comes in. Privatization of essentials, human beings renting themselves to other human beings to survive, mass inequality, profits above all - it's not moral.
way to complicated for me man!!!

America is a center right country like they say on Fox news.
emeka1978 2 years ago
But even if thats true its irrelevant in government. The Democrats will pass agendas that the people don't agree with if its corporate. Things like Ben Bernackes reappointment. Almost all the country left or right is in favour of campaign finance reform. That won't pass either.
It is nothing about the public being right or left. As all the bills are not about right or left.
CmdrTobs 2 years ago
Do you really want me to explain politics to you? Do you know what a filibuster is? Have you heard of reconciliation and a thing called cloture? That's how. Republicans never gave a shit about bipartisanship, which is obvious when they vote against bills they've cosigned. That's un-American. The only thing they care about is getting re-elected. Meanwhile the middleclass is reeling and pointing at Obama when the blame should be on Republican obstructionists.
dukesmaviddicky 2 years ago
Why can't they point the finger at Obama as well though? He's got a Senate majority which WAS filibuster proof and he's accomplished absolutely nothing. Sure the Republicans are evil retards but Obama is pretty weak sauce and should be held accountable too.
Ian7570 2 years ago
Well look at the argument. You're simply saying government is functional so long as there exists a filibuster proof majority. That's not democracy. What we're seeing in todays politics is UNHEARD OF. Having two or three Democrats straying from the base on some issues isn't a bad thing, nor is it a sign of weakness. Assuming they haven't been bought out by capitalists, it shows free thinking and that they're open to other ideas. (CONTINUED)

dukesmaviddicky 2 years ago 2
@dukesmaviddicky I agree. Unfortunately, its all about political gain, rather than doing whats best for the American people. If a Republican votes for a bill put forth by the Democrats, no matter how beneficial that bill may be, they are crucified by their peers. It makes it very difficult to ever get anything accomplished. I fear it's a broken system.
StewedCarnage 2 years ago 2

Richardgwm 2 years ago
why not eliminate the Senate entirely?
Why not?
No other democracy on earth has what we call The Senate. Britain, France, Italy, Australia, Japan, Norway, Canada, All of them are governed by their version of the House of Representatives.
In America we are governed by 10 or 11 Senators, who are all bought and paid for.
Its not right, and it can not last

@blingbling65943 Canada has a Senate. The UK has the House of Commons and The House of Lords. The US would benefit from mandatory question time though.
hollygolightly66 2 years ago
@hollygolightly66
To be clear;
Canada, the UK (the other countries I've mentioned) do not have a legislative body like the U.S. Senate that has the real power to stop legislation from the House.
They do not have the same thing we do, where the power of government is contained between 9 or 10 men.
blingbling65943 2 years ago

The answer is, he can't.
So,
say "good night" Becker.

allow filibusters, but with a catch. filibusters have to be continuous. the minute you stop speaking, the filibuster's done, and the bill is forced to a vote.

AllendeAllende 2 years ago
His point, and many have tried to make this point before, is that actual capitalism is the last thing most corporations want, the idea that it is "capitalism" is just corporate propoganda...most corporations in this day and age wouldnt be able to exist without massive tax cuts and subsidies, all on the backs of the middle and lower class, even much of the "upper class"...its all a scam, Cenk seems to actually get that.
BobChaos23 2 years ago 7
I agree with your point about large corporations not wanting the free market, but corporations have controlled the government for ages. It's misleading to speak of the government as some sort of independent entity. John Dewey said politics is the shadow cast on society by big business, and I think he was absolutely right.
Liberals often speak of the injustice of large wealth inequality, but mass inequality is inherent in capitalism.
AllendeAllende 2 years ago
That's generally true however, I think you'll fnd if you watch the show enough that Cenk is a fan of WELL REGULATED capitalism which tends to address the disparity you mentioned more effectively but is (sadly) a far cry from what currently exists in the US.

I believe capitalism is dehumanizing and oppressive regardless of the form it comes in. Privatization of essentials, human beings renting themselves to other human beings to survive, mass inequality, profits above all - it's not moral.
