6:20 If the game has logic, then each of the eight periods of the 24-hour day should be three hours, you rest for 10 minutes, so you can pass one of those periods after 18 rests.
9:10 There's another abnormal path, if you don't consider it cheating. Simply walk diagonally past the corner trapdoor. It might not be worth it.
9:38 I was never forced to use the mirror. You can take it and continue to build up your character, then visit the castle.
1:12 What do you mean, it can't be done??? The key to escaping the ogre without Calm is to get him to chase you around the middle of the room, turning and running away at almost the last second.
2:25 There's an easy way to "practice" stealth: just repeatedly switch between "sneaking" and walking or running. Nothing else matters, not even how long you were sneaking or walking.
3:20 If it helps you improve your time, you can try using space bar to change "up" to "down" and vice versa.
Silly question...is there any particular reason you went with thief rather than magic user? Is it just to pick the kobold's pocket? Seems to me everything else you do is more accurately served by magic user, and you could get away with simply casting fetch on the seed rather than climbing...although that is also prone to failure and you could run out of MP. Throwing might also be a good idea. I'm just not clear on what specifically thief gets you.
@azuarc The Thief provides the best initial point spread. A minimum of 35 Stealth is required to steal the key from the kobold, and no other class can provide this much Stealth and still get both Magic and Throwing/Climbing. (Fighter lacks Magic, and Magic User lacks Throwing and Climbing.)
@azuarc It could be theoretically faster to go with Magic User and rely on Fetch to get the seed, but as you mentioned, it's prone to failure. I'd have to get really lucky and nab the seed within a couple tries. Also, it would waste some time by buying Fetch first, getting the Healer's ring, collecting the reward, and then going back for Open.
@azuarc Finally, there's the problem with resting. There are precious few ways to make time elapse faster, and you can't make yourself rest unless you're tired. You have to wait for nightfall before you can get the fairy dust. That's why I spend three minutes climbing the tree. If you can figure out how to make time go by faster than I did, then the Magic User might make for a slightly faster run.
@Rainault Give yourself throwing then. Stand in the middle of nowhere, grab a huge handful of rocks, and start throwing them. Uses up energy and raises your skill so you can hit the sporea seed. It's also a much faster animation than climbing the tree. Short of acrobatics, which isn't available until QFG3, that was usually my best answer to "working out."
@azuarc I was wary of this idea at first, since when throwing rocks to get the seed, you have to wait for the seed before each throw attempt. With climbing, you only climb once, then wait to catch the seed. However, with all the practice I'd be doing, my Throwing skill should actually be high enough to get it on the first try, at which point it doesn't matter. If I ever try to beat my time, I might try that.
you can use the fetch spell on the spore seed... that would have saved you a few minutes (buying the spell from the magic shop doesn't take as long as you did climbing) and then you could have slept til nightfall
@achronism You have to be either very skilled or very lucky to catch the seed using Fetch. I did manage to Fetch the seed on the first try once, though. Still, there's no way to sleep until nightfall. Any attempts to sleep will fail unless "sunset approaches", and if you try to sleep then, you will sleep until morning. And you can't rest unless you're tired. Hence the climbing practice.
@Rainault And you'll only sleep until morning if you're in a safe spot (the town, Erana's Peace, the dryad's grove, with 'Enry). If you sleep elsewhere you'll sleep until the night gaunt gets you.
@Rainault oh I didn't think it took that much practice. You can choose the "sleep for an hour" option if you play the remake instead of the original. That's probably why I was confused about not being able to sleep.
@Rainault as far as I remember you don't even need to read the Brigand's note to use the password. As long as you've played the game before and know that the password is "hiden goseke" you can simply type it in and the troll inside the cave will go hide :-)
@Rainault It does work. I've done it before. However, I also have the *ORIGINAL* version of the game, where it's still called Hero's Quest, so maybe they changed that in later releases. I can definitely verify that witnessing the brigands is not necessary for the old school text box version of the game. The remake, yes, but not old school.
@azuarc I have the "original" version too (Hero's Quest), and you're right, I know what you mean... :)
One thing @Rainault... could you have shaved time off of your speed-run by using the "spacebar" to help repeat certain entries? Such as typing "Climb " ... but then typing out "up" and "down" separately? Just asking--I don't recall exactly.
you can outmaneuvre the ogre. you let him chase you a little, run to the bottom, run to the right, then get to the cave mouth. you can't outmaneuvre him when you leave though, but if you run from the fight you can easily escape the screen. Calm is faster for your speed run I think though
Favourite games of all time, good effort completing it this fast. I must have played when I was 6/7 yrs old for the first time and we couldn't even work out how to attack until playing for about 360 game 'days'. That's dedication!
I've always played non-magic thieves... ogre is easy to get around, at normal speed... freesci seems to screw it up, but in dosbox or real dos it's fine.
Umm last time I remembered, I could run past the ogre without having the calm spell. You just have to trick him taking the long way to catch you. I didn't know what to do at the bear part though lol...and now I see it was pretty obvious -_- *sigh*
I love it. This was really the first game I ever played for the PC, and I still remember the awe I was in to see it. Amazing stuff, thanks so much for posting this!
Resting is not required. You only die if you either alert Brutus at the archery range or enter the screen directly south of the range, where you encounter Bruno. By avoiding both of these areas, you avoid dying.
was there no Baba Yaga in the EGA version? I know you don't need to break the curse in the VGA version to pass the game (but they do give you that guilt trip at the end) , but is she even in this version? been so long since I've played it.
The key here is to leave the mirror alone on the desk. If you pick it up, it triggers the Baba Yaga quest, and the only ways to beat the game then are defeating Baba Yaga or going to the castle manually. Leave the mirror alone, and you're taking to the endgame directly.
Your mistake is using climbing skill to get the seed. Throwing is easier. Just put your points into throwing instead of str (15 throwing total). Otherwise it's the same thing....spam open door to raise str and get in at the end. Easy as pie!
Throwing is certainly easier and gets the seed faster, but there is another motivation for climbing instead: time. Regardless of which path you take, you absolutely must wait until nightfall to get the fairy dust. This is why I take that side trip to the stables, as it passes the time.
By doing the climbing practice, I exert stamina and am able to rest. You will notice (even with my bumbling) that the exact number of climb attempts I perform allows me to rest the exact number of times needed for night to arrive.
There's also the fact that throwing rocks to get the seed requires waiting for the right moment per attempt, whereas a successful climb does not depend on the seed. Then it's a simple "catch" and wait.
Yes, I do know that it is not required to save Barnard, but the only alternative is to take the main entrance into the fortress, which is nigh impossible without intensive combat training. In order to take the secret passage via the troll cave, you have to hear the password, and B&B don't appear unless you've saved Barnard, which is why I do.

But still, well done on finishing the game in just under 10 minutes! (the shortest time it took me, in game time at least, is 4 days, but I cheated).
You know, you could probably cut that time in half by cashing in on some of your reward money, enough to by a fetch spell (unless that takes much practice). You're not required to save the Baronet either, so you can put the initial boost on climbing.
