I don't know how I missed seeing this movie because I'm such a history buff. I'm so glad I found it on youtube and thank you so much for uploading it!!
Well...at least Anne got a professional swordsman who knew what he was doing, and not Farmer Potatoes from down the road who volunteered for the job- because that's what the common folk usually got.
@brandie7654 To me it sounded like she was talking to her lady-in-waiting.. saying sorry if she was ever mean to her.. Mary was a really popular name back then. Don't you think that's what it looks like?
This was a good adaptation, although most sources state that the French executioner did not have the sword in his hand whilst she walked up to the scaffold. It is said that the sword was hidden underneath the straw so that she couldn't see it. When the job was done, her body was laid in an elm arrow-box and interred in the chapel of St Peter ad Vincula. Bloody times indeed.
I just finished Alison Weir's biography on Henry VIII and she insinuated that Anne was most likely pregnant when she was executed. If so, that's the first time I've ever heard that. Has any one else heard anything or read anything to shed light on this matter? Alison Weir usually knows her shit.
@Princesspeach2007 Yeah, bodies twitch for ages :| Like the ehadless chickens. It's so sad. She's my favourite of all the wives! Helena is such an amazing actress for this part :)
@beatrixcarter11 Yes, but Henry didn't want to. At that time he was ready to be done with her and move onto Jane Seymour, who did give him actually son. And Anne's marriage to Henry was annulled before her execution, which leads to the question if she was never married to him, how could she adulter? But of course Henry wanted her gone so he ignored it.
It is also very unlikely that Anne was given the opportunity to save herself if she would only renounce the validity of her marriage. Henry had already done that, and was able to do so given the fact that he was now supreme head of the Church of England. Catherine of Aragon was already dead, so there were also no remaining ex-wives to be concerned with at that point, either. By this time, Henry had become the bloodthirsty monarch who used death as a way to rid himself of troublesome types.
Poor Anne. All for a successor. Anne made the tragic mistake of not producing a living male heir. I think she was pregnant with a son, but she made a mistake when she had a miscarriage or stillbirth. Poor girl.
Theres no "if" or "maybes" about it Anne Boleyn did NOT have a sixth finger.
During the chapel renovations under Queen Victoria, Annes body was identified and noted that she had no 6th finger.
I like the execution at the end ( apart from the incorrect dress and her slight nervousness during her speech) they excluded the myth that the executioner felt pity for her and yelled "Boy where is my sword?"
The producers of The Other Boleyn Girl have stolen numerous lines and scenes from this film to make thier own version of this story. Anne had six fingers on her left hand and moles on her face. She was not that pretty either.
She didn't have six fingers. That was a slur passed on by her enemies to make her seem "witchlike" - not a single person at court, including the Imperial Ambassador (who hated her) ever said she had a sixth finger.
Conversely, the people who claimed she had 6 fingers, Margaret Roper, for example, never once had a glimpse of her and were recycling second and third hand gossip.
As for "not pretty" - that could be true. But she was charming, vivacious, lively and well educated, for all that.
Since physical deformities were generally interpreted as a sign of evil, it is unlikely that Anne Boleyn would have gained Henry's romantic attention had she had any. Anne Boleyn was described by contemporaries as intelligent and gifted in musical arts and scholarly pursuits.
Nicholas Sander, a Roman Catholic born 1530, was committed to deposing Elizabeth I and re-establishing Roman Catholicism in England was the first to write that Anne had six fingers on her right hand.
Anne didnt have a sixth finger.. And I highly doubt that she had " Moles on her face" Maybe a beauty mark on her face and perphas a few moles on her neck, but if she was to have more, I doubt the king would be intrested in her.
i really like this movie, but it is so inaccurate. katherine was never with mary when she died, since mary and her were refused by henry to see each other in fear that they would conspire against him and anne and elizabeth were not together on the day of anne's execution
And also, Anne was very intelligent ... I don't believe that she didn't understand what a dangerous game she was playing, since Henry held all the cards. She gambled everything, and unfortunately in the end, she lost.
The irony is that this child, who was such a disappointment to Henry and was the child he was probably least interested in, grew up to be one of England's greatest rulers.
@lat3908 indeed it is a little inaccurate, but I must say some of the stuff is very true!!!, and it comes close to the real thing, I love this version far better than the "Tudors".
Oh yes, the speech is quite accurate itself, but I was rather referring to the performance of the speech. It sounds a bit monotone and weak, when I believe Anne would have used a more forceful tone. But that's just my opinion. It's a nice movie all the same.
there is a lot wrong with this death act, however nicely done. The daughter and sister where not there, Further, Anne was given a Royal death, which was by invite only. The common people did not see it. There was no chanting of crowds. To be pickier Anne was dressed in the regalia of a Royal, with furs and high fashion of her day but in the English style, She had preferred French in life. She was led out from the palace gates not the prison gates to meet her end.
Also Henry allowed her to pick how she wanted to die, so she picked a french swordsman (because they were the best). The execution had to be put off a couple of times because it took a while for him to get there.
Yes, full of inaccuracies. I am not sure, but although the sword was French, I doubt the swordsman was. She gives him a coin, when I recall she gave him a purse with £20 in it. She was a nuisance. A lot of people suffered and died because of her machinations, including her own brother. She turned England from the Faith of our Fathers. She should have been burnt as heretic. I would have struck the light and set the faggots ablaze myself.
Although Helena is an exetremly good actress the scene is incorrect. Elizabeth and Mary Boleyn were not present at the tower in Anne's last moments. Elizabeth did not learn of how her mother died until she was eight years old when she witnessed her 2nd cousins fate, Katherine Howard.
@TheAnnoyingThing1915 They both were, Anne knew what she was getting herself into, but she chose her fate, I don't feel bad for Anne, and eye for an eye, she stole Henry from Cathrine, so now she she is dying for it.
You all speak so deep and well educated, so I just have to say this: I feel sorry for Anne. No matter what she did, that was not right. A person only have one life, and if she was guilty(wich I doubt she was) they could give her a second chance. The 19th of may 2009 I will wear black clothes in honor of her.
She wasn't. I have not read too much about king henry (but I do know a fair amount) but my thoery is that she was caught hugging her brother and they overreacted claiming it was adultry and incest.
Anne most certainly did not deserve to die-she was falsely accused of adultery with several men, including incest with her very own brother George-he too was a victim of judicial lies. What she did to Katherine and Mary was unkind true but she did not commit the crimes which caused her death. Henry VIII was a bluebeard of a ruler-he murdered her as surely as he murdered in his hypocrisy his 5th wife Katherine Howard-for the 'crime' of adultery-something which he freely indulged in.
True - but you forget that the kings were allowed to commit adultery, while women were not. In his eyes, it was not hypocrisy, it was law. You were allowed to betray your wife as king, but you were not allowed to betray your husband who was the king.
The expression:Daddy maybe, momma definitely" applies here. A queen sleeping with another man ran the risk of a bastard inheriting the throne. So Queens had to be utterly faithful, which sucked as most of these Kings seemed to shag everything in sight.Even worse, these ladies had to watch their husband's mistresses parade around court in their faces and say nothing.
I couldn't have stood it. Murder would have been done.
I understand it was the law-and actually the double standard is still fairly strong today especially in certain parts of the world But it is still hypocrisy imo-especially in the eyes of God.
It wasn't like there was any birth control back then, at least any really reliable. It wasn't just the King, either, nearly every class had this mentality- it was just the way the world worked.
It is logic from the view point of this time: A royal bastard was minor affair, doubt about the fatherhood of a prince could easily end up in civil war.
The Treason Act 1351 (25 Edw. 3 St. 5 c. 2) , still in force, is absolutely clear.
this women was FUCKING INNOCENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE DIED BECAUSE OF A MAD FUCKING KING WHO JUST WANTED TO HAVE A FUCKING SON!!!!!! BE CURSED HENRY VIII. FOR THE ETERNITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for uploading such a brilliant movie. Absolutely loved it. 5* all the way and shared with all my Tutor friends. By the way is this a series? ARe there more parts to it with the other wives
As for the man who was swinging the sword, with a swing like that he couldn't hit anything out of the infield. Please forgive me it's almost baseball season.
Ohh and incase anyone wants to know an interesting fact haha!
When the swords him at the end holds up Anne's head it is not to show she is dead. They would old up the prisoners head as they are still conscience for about 10 seconds after the head is cut off, therefore when Anne's head is held up she can actually see her own body on the floor!
I forgot one more thing, Anne wasnt that bitchy, she did apologize for what she did, it was for the best, I want to kill those crowd for being rude, except for the guy, that hold the sword hes the only one that felt sad
i agree, although in reality the poor werent there but those who were there i do believe that they realised after he speech she wasnt as bad as they made out, which i take comfort in
Yes plus the fcat that before she went to be executed she was sent to confession by the priest. Back then if you had committed a crime than the worse punishment would be not to admit it before your death, then you would live in endless punishment, Hell. Anne did not admit to anything, this is evidence that she did not commit the crime, this is why the priest falls on his knees when she is killed as he knows it is murder.
yes ofc, she swore during confession that she was innocent and admitted nothing at the scaffold it is proof when you consider that it was customary to acknowledge your sins before death, anne did no such thing
*sign* Helena die in many movies, I declare let her live!! yes I know she really didnt die its acting, but it seem so real, like-I cant explain, Henry should go to hell, Anne doesnt deserve to die
gosh as soon as she was seeing her daughter for the last time i was crying :( its so sad,to have to leave her daughter so young*cries*Helena dies in to many movies cuz this,Sweeney Todd,Harry Poter,Frankenstein..i guess Corpse Bride..but that was the whole plot..she dead when you meet her.
its not sad, it means the director thought she would overshadow the other actors, so she had to be killed off in order to keep movies in balance lol....shes the best actress, and all her parts are memorable so it doesnt matter if she dies in them or not
Well if he's not burning in hell he's spending a few millenia in purgatory according to his beliefs (he was still 'Catholic' in his heart after all-just wanted to be head of the church not the Pope).
just read some of the other responses, come one guys it is an interpretation, its more honest than some of the HOLLYWOOD films and though the bit with elizabeth was noway real it was emotional i suppose and lets remember she died with a dignity i couldnt even think of
I thought Anne was beheaded like other nobles, and Royals on Tower Green-not Tower Hill with the commoners?? Was there really an angry crowd like that??
She was beheaded in a more private setting, like other nobles, on Tower Green. There were witnesses, but certainly not the angry crowd of commoners like this.
The scene with her daughter Elizabeth is deeply moving-but did it happen? If so then at least Anne was allowed to see her child one last time-a mercy not granted the woman she betrayed when she was her maid of honour-Queen Katherine was never allowed to see Mary again.
No, Elizabeth wasn't present in the Tower at any time before Anne died. The last time she saw her daughter would have been at court before her removal to the Tower.
Well-at least she could see Elizabeth prior to her arrest. She did not have to suffer for years on end as Katherine did not seeing her child for over 4 years and to her death.
Actually,I think she didn't see her daughter at court either, because by that time Elizabeth had her own household(like all royal children) at Hatfield, brought up by other ladies, tutors, fed by a wet nurse, etc.Anne didn't have an ordinary mother-daughter relationship with her.She cared for her in different ways, like ordering her fine clothes and visiting her occasionally. That was the custom of the time.

was anne a victim or a victimizer who got what was coming to her, or a little of both? we'll never really know.
we do know she did want to marry henry percy but her family, his family, and the king forbade it.
that makes her a victim.
but she played henry for all it was worth.
if she really didn't want to marry him she could have chose not to or just became his mistress but she went for the big prize
she had no pity at all for catherine we know that.
I think she was a manipulator with a big head

It is logic from the view point of this time: A royal bastard was minor affair, doubt about the fatherhood of a prince could easily end up in civil war.
The Treason Act 1351 (25 Edw. 3 St. 5 c. 2) , still in force, is absolutely clear.

OMG,
I swear I almost started crying when she said goodbye to Elizabeth. Even though I know that it is horribly inaccurate, it still saddens me. =].

Yes, I agree with you, Henry. God help you because you'll surely need it in your afterlife.

Do you have the next episode?
augustus7800 3 years ago
That Henry was a funny little piece of shit, wasn't he?.
mcmlxvi 3 years ago 2
I forgot one more thing, Anne wasnt that bitchy, she did apologize for what she did, it was for the best, I want to kill those crowd for being rude, except for the guy, that hold the sword hes the only one that felt sad
pokemonfangirl3 3 years ago
Yes but she did win the crowd over with her brave speech, i think everyone who was there understood near the end that she was innocent
laurenlfc48 3 years ago 3
i agree, although in reality the poor werent there but those who were there i do believe that they realised after he speech she wasnt as bad as they made out, which i take comfort in
XxCrazygal2007xX 3 years ago 2
Yes plus the fcat that before she went to be executed she was sent to confession by the priest. Back then if you had committed a crime than the worse punishment would be not to admit it before your death, then you would live in endless punishment, Hell. Anne did not admit to anything, this is evidence that she did not commit the crime, this is why the priest falls on his knees when she is killed as he knows it is murder.
laurenlfc48 3 years ago 4
yes ofc, she swore during confession that she was innocent and admitted nothing at the scaffold it is proof when you consider that it was customary to acknowledge your sins before death, anne did no such thing
XxCrazygal2007xX 3 years ago 3
*sign* Helena die in many movies, I declare let her live!! yes I know she really didnt die its acting, but it seem so real, like-I cant explain, Henry should go to hell, Anne doesnt deserve to die
pokemonfangirl3 3 years ago 3
they said; The king will burn in hell for this.
you must speak out aginst him from the scaffold you could turn the crowd

the best portrayal of anne boleyn i've ever seen, with jodhi may in The Other Boleyn Girl a close second
GoldenEye333 3 years ago 3
I nearly cried when Elizabeth said, "mommy." That was so sweet and heartbreaking at the same time.
scorpianofthesun 3 years ago 8
That Henry king can go to hell because look at what he has done to Anne!!! Thanks for uploading this. Helena played this character so well!

gosh as soon as she was seeing her daughter for the last time i was crying :( its so sad,to have to leave her daughter so young*cries*Helena dies in to many movies cuz this,Sweeney Todd,Harry Poter,Frankenstein..i guess Corpse Bride..but that was the whole plot..she dead when you meet her.
harrysfan101 3 years ago 5

poor Anne as much as she was a total bitch she did not deserve
ekthebomb 3 years ago 3
She wasn't really a bitch, perhaps to Mary but other than that....not really
CCmani 3 years ago 6
It's quite possible Henry's first wife Katherine thought she was a bitch as well. Once can't blame her if she did..
audie83 2 years ago
Helena dies in a majority of her movies!!! How sad
mysticalight8222 3 years ago 5
its not sad, it means the director thought she would overshadow the other actors, so she had to be killed off in order to keep movies in balance lol....shes the best actress, and all her parts are memorable so it doesnt matter if she dies in them or not
Thedarksideoflove 3 years ago 5
wow when he said "god, help me" i was like 'no way, not after what u have done!!!!
Free411 3 years ago 6
I can't believe he would ever say this. He cast off his wives easily, in fact, got quite good at it.

Henry VIII is burning in hell for this. Thank you for posting this!
londonchick2 3 years ago 10
Well if he's not burning in hell he's spending a few millenia in purgatory according to his beliefs (he was still 'Catholic' in his heart after all-just wanted to be head of the church not the Pope).
audie83 2 years ago
is there more to this but helena isn't in it?
funnyman200 3 years ago
Did she say 'Forgive me Mary-I was/n't angry with you-I spoke with sharp tongue??'
audie83 3 years ago
Yes I think it was something along the lines of 'Forgive me Mary, if I was ever angry with your or spoke with a sharp tongue'
mirrorofsin 2 years ago 2
just read some of the other responses, come one guys it is an interpretation, its more honest than some of the HOLLYWOOD films and though the bit with elizabeth was noway real it was emotional i suppose and lets remember she died with a dignity i couldnt even think of
friendoftheband 3 years ago 3
ty for this post loved it, thought the cockney accent a bit over the top but what a good prog ty again more plse
friendoftheband 3 years ago 2
I thought Anne was beheaded like other nobles, and Royals on Tower Green-not Tower Hill with the commoners?? Was there really an angry crowd like that??
audie83 3 years ago
She was beheaded in a more private setting, like other nobles, on Tower Green. There were witnesses, but certainly not the angry crowd of commoners like this.
otherboleyngirl 3 years ago 2
That's Hollywood-types for you! Dramatic license and all that.
audie83 3 years ago 3
The scene with her daughter Elizabeth is deeply moving-but did it happen? If so then at least Anne was allowed to see her child one last time-a mercy not granted the woman she betrayed when she was her maid of honour-Queen Katherine was never allowed to see Mary again.
audie83 3 years ago
No, Elizabeth wasn't present in the Tower at any time before Anne died. The last time she saw her daughter would have been at court before her removal to the Tower.
otherboleyngirl 3 years ago 3
Well-at least she could see Elizabeth prior to her arrest. She did not have to suffer for years on end as Katherine did not seeing her child for over 4 years and to her death.
audie83 3 years ago
Actually,I think she didn't see her daughter at court either, because by that time Elizabeth had her own household(like all royal children) at Hatfield, brought up by other ladies, tutors, fed by a wet nurse, etc.Anne didn't have an ordinary mother-daughter relationship with her.She cared for her in different ways, like ordering her fine clothes and visiting her occasionally. That was the custom of the time.
