We shoot the scenes more than once, and each time from a different angle, then later put them together. It looks like multiple angles. This is the way hollywood has been doing it for years.
Great comment, thanks, Making a film and watching tips and tricks videos like this will get you the same place that film school does. Also get the audio book STORY by Robert Mckey, Great stuff for film makers, a class in itself. Thanks again for the nice words. There are good documentaires and shows where they interview directors that can be helpful too. Let me know when you do your first short film if you havent already - John
This was very helpful as I progress through my initiation of filmmaking. I don't want to pay money for film school as I feel that creativity and a little elbow grease will take me farther and more effeciently...I'd rather invest in books, youtube and seminars and save the bulk of my money for the equipment.
Thank you for being so kind as to share this information. I will be sure to pay it forward some day.
Thanks, that's a nice collection of tips. I wonder how much of the cinematography was pre-planned (eg decision on hand-held vs tripod), and how much was opportunistic and worked out on the day. Did you say in advance "we really MUST have as shot from the inside of a mailbox". With simple kit, it's feasible to make it up as you go along, but with more elaborate production values, it affects the equipment and people you're going to need to bring along. Is there a rule of thumb?
I plan for tripod but then sometimes revert to handheld to not slow down the shoot and to be sure to get the shot I want. I saw the mailbox driving by one day and said, I really want to use that, as far as the inside shot, That one is automatic for me since years ago when I produced Advanced Broadcast Camera Techniques video and put that one in that training video. The rule of thumb I have is run over what you are going to do before you go out that day, including all the shots and angles and
Go over shots /dialog and then when you go out , be prepared to change your game plan and also shoot something you perhaps didn't plan on. Example-, leaving the shot where Lisa is sitting on the hot spring, we were walking back to the car and I saw the road wet and it was empty (no cars!) going down a hill. I quickly said, "Lisa I'm going to put this cam down - I want you to walk over it and keep walking in the middle of the road. I knew then, I had a closing powerful shot.
You've just done a great service there. For anyone without training/experience, this has been a great help, lots of ideas, tricks and techniques explained for the new film makers. Just shows how much thought & direction goes into a few short scenes. These fundamentals translate all the way up to mega-budget pictures. Unless someone is a cinematographer or director, they don't appreciate the intent behind all these visuals, the realism created makes them subtle. Thanks
You are very right about your statement because I wouldn't want to pay to go to film school. I use a nikon d300s and soon to acquire the d3s to shoot my short films. I am just starting but I feel that youtube tutorials and just plain ol reading books from the bookstore and actively listening and watching great films will take me far.
Thanks, I may do more in the future. I have been selling a dvd called advanced broadcast camera techniques for years at elitevideo com site. Both are about 80 minutes and cover a lot. I will also be trying to put more up on youtube. Please subscribe if you haven't already..
We didn't do that because we felt strongly that she wasn't homeless and couldn't shower etc, but she was on a journey. We felt it would have been to cliche and gotten across the wrong message. We did very little makeup though.
Does NYS mean New York State. I used to live in Conne3cticut. I uploaded the footage in HD via Sony Vegas. I just used the lens that came with the camcorder. In the office, I shot it twice.
million dollar question how did you upload this clip so clear? do I need to convert I mostly use 720 setting on my T1i. Also what type of lens do you recommend I am thinking of buying a zoom lens which one did you use by the pond when you zoomed out?? and in the office scene did you use two T1i's?? or did you stop and reshot etc.
Having actors do something. I naturally have always tried to have them do that, but never really thought about it. Great tip. Good way to keep them from over acting. I am subscribing now. Thanks
Geat tips. Thanks.

what camera did you use to shoot this movie ?
deniskk 10 months ago
How do you get the camera to move around so fast to get the different shots? or do you have multiple camcorders placed all around?
