Was this video 'enhanced' in any way with software? It was filmed with the stock 18-55, but the film quality looks really good ('film like'). I also have the NEX-5 with the 18-55, but my 'raw' videos look nothing like this. What's the best way to shoot videos? Is it in manual mode and adjusting settings for each scene?
i have nex 5 and most of my videos are with nex 5 18-55mm lenses,, i want to buy the 16mm , someone can advice me if the16mm nex lens will couse any distortion when i make videos or pictures???
You know your reviews could be better if you did a side by side comparison with the stock lens vs the 16mm. I don't understand people that don't compare the lens. The same info that you gave is nothing different then what Sony has on their site. Rookies
Can you please let me know if there is any optical zoom with the 16mm lens? I a complete novice with camera terms and I just cant figure this out. Thanks.
@mohd4325 When you use the 16mm lens, there's not any optical or digital zoom :) I have both the 16mm and 18-55mm, and I use the 18-55mm all the time, I really like to have zoom
@MissionMetallica Yes there is digital zoom. you go into menu settings and press digital zoom on the NEX 5. then you have zoom with the 16mm F2.8 its 10x zoom. I dont know why nobody knows about this...I havent bought any additional lenses. just have my 16mm and i zoom 10x easily and it looks pretty good. It helps to read the manuals that come with the cameras, but i understand youtube is the average manual these days. NEX 5 HAS BUILT IN ZOOM. TRY IT WITH YOUR 16mm or PRIMES. ;)
Hi there! Can I please ask you, dear professional, a question?
I am a dancer and I am looking to increase my video quality. I am wondering wheter or not the Sony NEX-5 with the 16 mm lens OR 18-55 will blur my backgrounds if I am out dancing on the street, recording with it?
Id be soo thankful for an answer! The blurry-backgrounds-effect is what I am after right now. You can see what sort of videos I do if you check out my channel.
@LunaCherry2 I guess you found it by now, but no, it won´t blur your backgrounds. For best results, you need lenses with pretty big apertures combined with long focal lengths. The 16mm is "only" f/2.8 and not nearly "long" enough to achieve that. This is simply not a good system to achieve what you´re looking for. Thy searching for a Micro 4/3 cameras, or the smaller Sony As.
Hope you review their future lens' they're coming out with this year. Really interested in the macro one but if there's very good replacements for the 18-55 & and the pancake, I'm all ears :)
@djphorce The incredible phase detection auto focus system in video mode on my Sony a55 works just fine. In fact it works so good the lenses have a hard time keeping up with it even with HSM auto focus motors...
Having just a contrast based system will never ever work anywhere.
And if you are using manual focus in video mode then going with the NEX is absolutely the wrong thing to do. Then an Sony a33 would be the right camera at the same price point with many benefits.
This is a dream size camera for me because I love the power of a DSLR, but the size of the pocket cameras. This is perfect because it's in between. Thank you for reviewing this lens. Hope to get this camera within a year.
doesn't look as sharp as lumix gf2 even though its higher resolution and bigger sensor

Thinking to buy NEX3 or 5 for small scale video production (5 min clips). Do you recommend it for that? Does it have 720p in 30/60fps? Thanks!

Nice explanation of the features .
Could you please tell me how do you rate NEX3 against Sony D90 & Sony 5100. Also with bigger lens can it take pics equivalent to DSLR's ?

@1650million Look for some NEX sample images with the 16mm lens, f/2.8 is plenty.

@AMDCores
No, it's a prime lens so 16mm is it. Good for wide angle shots but if you want to zoom you have to use your feet. :-)

wauw the contrast based auto focus on the NEX is bad. Do I need glasses? No it just jumps in and out of focus.
