Even legit R4s are bad now(If you can find one that's not a clone). There are no more updates so there will be less compatibility with games. Get an EDGE(cheaper Cyclo clone), Cyclo(lots of features), or AceKard 2

cyclods is beter in every way, it can hold enything up to 8gb micro sd cards as the R4 can only hold up to 2gb. the cyclo has an ingame menu withe rts, in game text reader, slow motion, lcd britness levles, cheat codes, return to menu, and return to game. in the settings it has alternet save mode, battery saver, lcd brightness, language, skin, rumble and boot from slot 2. the cyclo is moonshl compatible witch is a media program. the cyclo also has hombrew and emulator compatibility. its awsom

For anyone who's interested, dealextreme sell the R4 Pro which supports SDHC, and is only $9.90 US or approx. $15 Australian. They also stock genuine Hori screen protectors. This is a great video, I'm looking at buying a DS so will definately invest in the accessories you mentioned :D

To Bec246...those are fake. The R4 company does not make R4's anymore since so many other companys made ripoffs and bad flashcarts and put R4's name on it, so R4 stopped making them. You cant find them anymore anymore..if its called R4 pro then its fake if its called R4 anything (beside plain R4) then it is fake. Also check the price, if it seems amazingly cheap, then its fake.

Hey Arshak, mmm i realise that now after doing a lot of research. There are also no longer any firmware updates for the R4, because as you mentioned R4 do not actually make flashcarts anymore. I invested in an Acekard 2.1 instead from ozmodchips. Just need to get the ds now...

i have an R4 and the loading times are fast. it takes around 3-4 seconds max. and yes it auto-patches... i don't know what you mean by download play but it works great for me.

The R4 can't handle download play properly and doesn't support SDHC. The loading times are looong and I've read that the power consumption is slightly longer(no real proof there).

It doesn't auto-patch homebrew either. So yeah, Get another slot-1 card.

There is wriststraps with some DS lites, like mine.

If you are not gonna buy pair of sunglasses you get quality cleaning cloth and pouch from Play-asia, hori branded, if you want.

Hi, i have a question aabout the R4 ds (or cycleDS) Do the roms have specific regions? as in if i download a rom from the usa, would it still work in my english DS with english R4?

The games are region free, so it doesn't matter where your DS was bought, it will play games from any region.

Also, your save game is "slaved" to the game's region (so if you play a game from EU, it will only "find" your EU savegame - not a problem as you end up sticking with what you downloaded anyway).

In short, you can play pretty much ANY game.

Also, wrt the R4 I have yet to come across even a single game that doesn't work with the current firmware (v1.18) - even Castlevania runs properly.

Well, the CycloDS can use either the D-pad or stylus to navigate through the menu; which ever you prefer. Also, the CycloDS has a built-in Action Replay preloaded with codes for over 300 games. I believe it's compatible with code junkies. And videos and music don't need to be converted to play it on the CycloDS. Last but not least, CycloDS can play ROMs such as NSMB or MKDS that the R4 has problems playing. Oh and CycloDS can store micro SD cards with higher memory capacity than the R4.

CycloDS is superior because it is at a 99%+ compatibility rate while the R4 is at around 70%; also, the Cyclo allows for higher-end microSD cards, such as 4GB up to a projected 32GB.

i brought one a week ago from amazon, it costs £30-£40 but is well worth it, i have 33 games on a 2GB card.

If you can't find the R4 I suggest the M3 which does the same thing.

If you can't find it on Amazon, google it or go on eBay.

Homebrew games are legal.

Homebrew apps are legal

Running game roms that you OWN original copies of is legal.

Only running roms that you DON'T own the original cart of is piracy.

In the same way that owning a car is egal, sitting in one is legal, driving one is legal.....but running people over isn't ;-)

Even Amazon sell these now, so they're getting easier to find (I got mine from DealExtreme)

Cyclo isn't a rip-off, it's more a different companies take on "how to do it". As mentioned, they all do pretty much the same thing and you won't be disappointed with wahtever you buy ;)

Re:R4, yes, it does reduce battery life a bit, as do all the other flash carts.

For me I used to have about 15hrs gameplay, and with the R4 it's now about 12hrs gameplay....so that's 20% less.....but even then, it's still 4x more than my old PSP could manage (of course, if you don't use the wifi then it will be even longer).

I haven't tried video as I only use my DS for games, but of the vids I've seen here on YouTube it looks OK.

As far as I know yes. It's simply a case of drag and drop the few files you need from the R4 website download onto your microSD card.

Same with M3Simply and CycloDS.
