  • memories............................

  • Possibly the greatest song ever, certainly in my life time

  • its cauld outside but this is called someone, somewhere in summertime. classic Jim kerr.only us scottish people get that.

  • re considerablymore1 comment

there are two simple minds pre mullet haircut and post mullet

all business upfront and all party at the back Jim Kerrs barber should be out of prison by now.

  • charlie burchill you are a shite dancer from Jim

  • Derek Forbes, one of the great bass 80s bass players

  • "Shooting from the hip about our faith and love". Perhaps the most perfect and symmetrical collection of words being used as symbols created. Love X

  • There are two Simple Minds. Upto and pre-New Gold Dream. And the rest. They made a conscious decision to write stage/stadium friendly tracks post NGD. You can't blame them commercially, or practically, but it is fair to say albums 2-5 were seriously innovative and experiemental. What came after set them up financially for life but they are yet to recapture the critical ground lost post-82 - and probably never will.

  • Eyes of Love @ 4:33 *sigh* Still love this song after all these years... saw them many times live in the early 80s, once at Whiskey-a-go-go for only $6. Stood against the stage, right underneath Jim! I am still moved by his beautiful voice. One of the best bands ever!

  • Eyes of Love @ 4:33 *sigh* Still love this song after all these years... saw them many times live in the early 80s, once at Whiskey-a-go-go early 80's for $6. Stood against the stage, right underneath Jim! I am still moved by his beautiful voice. One of the best bands ever!

  • New Gold Dream-awesome.

  • Fobby on bass classic Minds

  • baseline sooooooooo goooood big forbes on the bullseye again mon then

  • Greatest presence on stage by Jim!!!

  • @unlikeanyotherhuman

You can read what he said in the Wikipedia article for Simple Minds, which was that he and Derek fell out over something stupid, like the fact that Derek's girfriend was prettier than the girlfriends of the other band members. In any case he was kidding. (He's been married twice and has two (grown up) children.) I fancied the pants off him when I was a teenager - and still do! Check him out in the video for Glittering Prize!

  • Must be one of the most haunting pieces of music written?

Mystical and tugs at your emotions.

Hard to believe it was written by guys so young?

Still baffled by Simple Minds music, trippy, just never ceases to make me feel, sometimes joy when i listen.

  • Best Simple Minds song ever!!!

  • only a b side to waterfront 12 inch ,crazy what a tune i still cant stop playing this song what 25 years + only with you live moves so fast ,when im with you here life moves so fast ,try telling that to your lady .......

  • pezzo di rara ispirazione e suggestione, non adegutamente valorizzato.

  • MYSTIC.......... i can't find words.........

  • Nope, I thought he was gay when I first saw him but he got married and had kids..........And then like a true pop star he got divorced :-D

  • He had a falling out with Jim (he wasn't turning up to practise etc). Jim said in an interviews years later "Something about him having a better girlfriend than me or something". They patched things up but it still sucks he fired him.

  • masterpeice !!!!!

  • Thanks for posting this. Reminds you how great they once were.

  • Awesome!

  • Simple Minds at the height of their powers...confident...hypnotic...unconventional...optimistic... New Gold Dreams, Glittering Prizes, and Promises of Miracles... if only everthing was possible!!!

  • @RyanMilne22

What a truly inspiring and beautifully deluxe comment.

    I agree, just gorgeous +

  • Badlands - Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek. Great movie

  • Beautiful, my favourite Simple Minds tune!!!

  • I wish I had written this song!

  • I was at this gig - superb! They did a third song after the show finished - 'someone somewhere'. Any HD versions of this about?

  • Are u okay?

  • when all creative juices are flowing !! when 2 shootting stars collide !! when the sun 1st shone on this earth !! only then this music is made !! shall we say music for the gods !!

  • Great Jim Kerr! Simple minds was the band that made one sounds more real to hear! I have a tightness in my throat when I remember that time!

  • They were great......but got lost some how...in stadiums.

  • I had bought a 12 inch single of Waterfront and a live version of this song that was almost identical to this recording was on the flip side and I was simply blown away. Listen to Sons and Fascination or New Gold Dream now and remember these guys were 23 years old when they were creating that music! It makes Green Day and like look like rank amateurs.

  • LOVEEEEEEEEEEE

  • i agree with permaveg. forbes was an understimated bassist. i think that also mcneel keyboard sound missed in their last 15 years.

  • Derek forbes leaving was a mistake, they never quite had that unique sound again.

  • Mick Mc Neil too

  • So very true but Derek had to go at that time.

  • Why ?

  • Very, very good. A sublime, rippling song that will not be withered by age. But there is a better version of this here. Recorded live in Newcastle in '82. Seek 'n ye shall find. Or if your a lazy bastard then just click on my name 'n you'll find it on my Simple Minds playlist.

  • only with you life moves so fast !!!! timeless music !! absolute genius

  • it has aged well only the smiths compare

  • This is really one of there best songs and the first one I ever heard from them. Too bad the recording is messed up where the solo starts.

    5 stars

  • Since Derek Forbes left the band, it isn't the same any more...

  • or mick, bass and keyboards just in the mix made a unique sound

  • remember i used to see jim kerr walking around glasgow in the early 80s,there something about him them that made him stand out from the crowed, didnt know the he was in what was to become on of the biggest bands to walk the earth, there i not many bands that can sell out 30k tickets these days for a venue, even though they have not had any singles in the uk top ten for some years now.

  • early Simple Minds were awesome, why oh why did they disapear up their own arse!?!? Classic.

  • So true...

  • cool-tori

  • Certainement Le plus grand groupe de musique new-wave des années 80...à nos jours.

Les "simple minds". Bravo pour votre parcours.

J'attend votre dernier album avec impatience et brio!

  • I saw them in about 83 a the Hollywood Palladium with China Crisis as opening band. One of the best concerts I've ever seen.

  • love this track so much, love the early stuff more than the latter but still enjoy anything by the band.

  • Mel gaynor - born for drumming. Derek Forbes - played bass like a lead

Charlie B and his grin. The 1980s Minds got an injection from Mel G and THIS is what makes their live sound at this time THE BEST of all Minds set ups.

  • best song on new gold dream saw them loads in late 70's early 80's then the commercial men stepped in and that was that! Listen to early stuff from Empires+Dance and Sons +Facination to get a real feel of this band.....

  • memories of being a teenager :-) class. the minds went downhill from mid 80's as they tried to be U2. But in the early days they were both exceptional

  • Wow, Jim can really "bring it" on stage! What a great voice, and such presence. I think this was my favorite of his looks throughout the years. He still has a gorgeous voice, and looks amazing. I don't know much from the New Gold Dream era, but now I want to go and get those CDs!

  • Go get them now! Early Simple Minds were sublime. On one album (New Gold Dream) they achieved what few other bands could achieve in an entire career. Sparkle In The Rain had some superb tracks too, especially Waterfront. But their very early album Sons & Fascination/Sister Feelings Call had some truly landmark songs...The American, Love Song, Sweat in Bullet, Wonderful in Young Life, Seeing out the Angel, 20th Century Promised Land, In Trance as Mission. You will enjoy discovering these gems.

  • Thanks so much! I am going to purchase them this week! Everything I've heard/read points to these albums as their pinnacle.

  • your welcome.Anything else u need 2 know just ask.

  • look at me i know all the songs, ive got the album and playlist in front of me but have only liked them for a couple of years and only saw them live in the 90's when they declined.Did u see them in the 70's at all?

  • Believe it or not, I saw them open for The Pretenders in '86, and I had no idea who they were! I went to see The Pretenders (who rocked, by the way). I remember SM as being a good opening act, but it's all a haze. What I wouldn't give to go back in time! I've just recently gotten into them, and now they're one of my favorite bands. I can't get over Jim's amazing voice!

  • after new gold dream the albums lost the keyboard edge,i did think street fighting years was or still is fantastic.

  • I really love this song.

With "C" Moon cry like a baby is my favorite...

Simply a great time the 80's...

  • i used to listen to New Gold Dream ..over and over and over again...

    its a CLASSIC album..

    Period.

  • Me too, still have the album!

  • Ditto, on everything you just said.

  • @usignup Hey---I agree--I still love it and can listen to it over and over :)

  • This track reminds me of Glasgow driving around listening on tape , when i was there in the eighties.

  • Their songs about wonder taking childrens first knowledge as a way to get back at real living.God he is a beautiful man and spirit mind.Chrissis Hynde knew he was the one. OOOH.what a littleliterature can do for us!!

  • Is that Herbie Hancock or Mel Gaynor on drums

  • Its Mel Gaynor, Herbie Hancock played the keyboard solo on the album.

  • oh my..seeing this again.. I was at the recording in Newcastle for The Tube when they did this. Their finest hour I think. Derek Forbes was the heart of the band for me. I saw them several times live in these early years. This is my youth on tape right here!

  • I was too young to catch this, indeed you could say my Simple Minds appreciation really started in the early 90's, which was in my opinion the start of degradation of mainstream music...Anyway, you were lucky in my opinion :).

  • I thinc mike McNeil was the real soul of the band...When he quitted...everything went road down

  • Agreed. His keyboard was the bedrock of their sound.

  • I heard this was "the favourite Simple Minds song" of the band's keyboard player, Mick MacNeil. I later heard (directly from him) that it was not true.

You might also be interested to know that I asked Mick about the 'meaning' of this song's lyrics, because I suspected they were about sex. Mick said he didn't know what Jim had in mind when he wrote it.

I also asked whether band members ever had an involvement in Jim's lyrics, but Mick said they kept their individual parts separate.

sti gran cazzi, dischi cosi nn ne fanno piu!!

  • this band deserves intense praise. they were so unique . the lyrics are sublimely disjointed and esoterically intriguing... not just to listen to, but to really hear.

  • Coolalass

  • I'm with the last comment : classic album. I'd just bought one of the first ever Walkmans on sale and recorded it to tape and must have listened to it a million times. Awesome tune, so inventive, and Herbie Hancock.

  • My favourite song on the album. One of the most underrated albums around.

Saw them in Liverpool a couple of years ago ........ made me realise why i loved their early stuff, and hated them big time when they became a high drama stadium rock band ... a poor man's U2. Shame.

Even worse, they re-did all their old classics in 'stadium rock' style almost as though they were ashamed of them. Unforgivable.

  • this song is the absolute best.

  • Yeah,New gold dream! What an album it was!No fillers, just strong tracks that make you shiver and dream about your youth and "the better days".

  • If ever you need to chill, bang on the album "New Gold". Listen to those bass lines and rifts and your in another world. It still has its magic 25 years on.."Brilliant days, wake up on brilliant days..."(someone,somewhere.)

  • Amazing song. On the album Herbie 'Rockit' Hancock plays the solo at the end.

  • Best song on a crackin album

  • nah, "somebody up there likes you" is the best track from this brilliant album

  • QUALITY.....

  • j'adore cette chanson,que de souvenir.

  • nostalgia

  • how good is this

  • ye simple minds at thier best, forbes was a great bass player, he left just after new gold dream and joined propoganda.

  • This album totally spaces me out, gives me shivers, let's my imagination soar!!.SM were a superb band, shame they sort of changed styles a few albums later and lost some momentum.Saw them in 2003 they played the classics and were amazing!!

  • Derek Forbes is so underrated, he really is a great bassist...

  • derek forbes was brilliant...so many classic bass lines..whats he at now?

  • Spakey69,you're right Derrick was amazing.Where's he go?? actually Mel gaynor is the other half of this brilliant rythm section amazing drummer!!

  • derek forbes is now playing in a band " fourgoodmen".. playing some old simple minds classics... well worth a look..

  • Ta sparkey will have a look!

  • Completely agree, Minds' early and later stuff is good and I appreciate Street Fighting Years.. just hate rubbish like Once Upon A Time :o(

  • The holy grail for SM.....

  • love it....best feelings......Bionda

  • together with glittering prize their best song!!!

  • Speed your love to me is amazing.

From the album Sparkle in the rain

  • Wow, thanks for posting this awesome clip. Imagine - they released New Gold Dream, Glittering Prize, Someone Somewhere In Summertime, Promised You A Miracle, Big Sleep and Hunter And The Hunted all on the same album! What a band! For me, at their peak no one could touch them.

  • You are so right ! a very underrated band that the 80's /90's not survived. They used to be as big as U_2

  • for me one of the best album of all time.

  • New Gold Dream is a sonic masterpiece!

  • Those are the EXACT 6 songs I play from that album and WHAT AN AMAZING ALBUM THAT IS! 10/10

  • Jim still has a great voice and is still good looking after so many years! I am still a great fan

  • I love this band. Jim recently held my hand at the melbourne gig on March 23,

  • It` not Jim it`s Mick mcneil on the keys who is th e inspiration.Only Dave Formula of Magazine can match the touch of this guy.Empires and Dance rule.

  • i love darkwave jim....this is my fav song from new gold dream....not the best performance though lol...nevertheless supurb in itself....thanx
