Besides, there were a few Israeli weapons that have been used during that war, starting with the IAI nesher, the first Israeli made jet fighter, with 111 kills and 16 losses (3 in dog-fights), the Shafrir air to air missile, the Gabriel naval missile which took credit destroying the entire Syrian navy in the battle of Latakia and many of the Egyptian gunboats (Israeli navy losses were 0), the UZI and many others...
PS: weapons are only as good as the soldiers using them.

US aid started on the evening of Oct the 15th.
Interestingly enough, the Russian aid to Egypt and Syria started on Oct the 9th.

Israel always have top of the line weapons, tanks, aircrafts from the US, we had at that time much older and less capable Soviet weapons. Most of Soviet support went to Syria who had troubles in the Golan hight and they got most of the Soviet support. Egypt fought extremely well but the only mistake was the try to advance with forces in Sinai out of the SAM battery range but it was intended to relieve some pressure from the Syrian front.

The Egyptians may claim that the Israel succeeded to surround their forces only because they thought that a cease fire was in place.
But Israel broke the cease fire only hours after it started and the Egyptians were still in their combat positions, but instead of fighting back, thousands of Egyptians chose to surrender.
The Israelis did not respect the UN call for a truce.
Maybe they are serial violators of UN resolutions,
but it doesn't prevent them from being victors of the 1973 war.

The 3rd army was trapped.
Although the Israelis didn't succeed capture Suez and lot of supplies were there, there was no way to move it to the east because the bridges were already destroyed, and the Egyptians couldn't bring new ones due to the encirclement.
The Israelis were not halted on Suez and could reach the Nile if they had more time, because they have surrounded Suez from all directions even if not seizing it.

Suez was not so important for the Israelis and they didn't try to seize it at all costs.
They only tried to improve their positions,
just before the implementation of a cease fire that was forced over them by America.
There is an audio record of an Israeli general telling his subordinate write before the battle of Suez in these words:
"If it's Beersheba - go for it, if it's Stalingrad - don't go"
In 1948 the Israelis entered Beersheba with no resistance, unlike the Germans in Stalingrad.

Impartial truth i believe is impossible to achieve. allways we will build historiographies with pieces of information. If one is inclined to the Israeli cause, probably will find it difficult to tolerate a different perspective, as an egyptian enthusiast. True revisionism and serious (or a try of) discussion about history can be achieved only by open minded people

But also, was a clear confrontation of the UN ceasefire.The israeli army moved without strong resistance, but the actual control of Suez and Ismailia, the final blow to the encirclement of the so called trapped third army, wasnt achieved, due to the fierce defense of those two cities.The third army wasnt trapped, copious ammounts of supplies were stored in Suez. I understand that post WWII propaganda is actually more powerfull than violence in strategic claims

When the war ended on 26/10/1973 the Israelis had more land west of the canal that the Egyptians had on the east.
So between 06/10 and 26/10 Israel gained land and Egypt lost land.
The status on 26/10/1973 was:
Egyptians forces in the canal area were exposed to Israeli air strikes unlike the Israelis.
30,000 Egyptian troops were encircled with no access to drinking water.
Egypt begged desperately for a cease fire while Israel wanted to continue the fight.
So who won the war?

So, just to make it clear, the article says there was never a threat to mainland Egypt. Israelis were halted in Suez and Ismailia. I know this is a passionate issue for both egyptians and israelis, its proud and nationalism...but history deserves to be clear, as a fullfillment of its destiny: teach us about our wrongs at the past and make us better human beings.

the 6th article in the magazine is about the battle at Suez and Ismailia.I must remember that this is an official U.S Army Magazine about Military Tactics, and it clearly says that the egyptian army halted the israeli army in those two cities.They describe the overall plan of deffence in Suez and Ismailia and they regard as very effective.When i say "they" i mean US Army specialists.

The fact is, i have an issue of the Military Review Magazine, from the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth. It´s from the first semester of 1980 and its specialized in middle east conflicts.

The Israelis did confess that they had some humiliating defeats, especially between 6/10 and 9/10 and every year new original documents and audio records are uncovered.
Somehow Israel failure on El Mansoura is not mentioned.
It simply didn't happen.
The El Mansoura story was fabricated in order to preserve the reputation of the failed general Hosni Mubarak

Another lie of the Mubarak regime is the El Mansoura air battle.
The alleged battle occurred on the afternoon of 14/10/1973.
During 53 minutes, 60 Egyptian aircraft shot down 17 Israeli planes out of 120, while loosing only 6 (3 of them of non combat reasons).

According to Israeli original operation's diaries, not a single Israeli plane flight toward
El Mansoura on 14/10.

Egypt gained the saving of its 3rd army, American military equipment, and all of Sinai.
Israel gained the continuing of American supply, sailing permit on the canal
since 1975 (before it agreed to withdraw from Sinai), and a separate peace with Egypt.
America gained Arab oil, the position of an honest mediator in the Middle East,
and Egypt as an obedient ally.

Before the war, there was no chance that Egypt would have a separate peace agreement with Israel, and let Israeli warships to sail on the Suez Canal.
Israel also wanted to keep part of Sinai to itself.
But it was the U.S secretary of state Henry Kissinger who forced U.S. will on both sides.

obviouse it was the contrary you broke it because what you achieved wasnt equal to the casulties and losses you had and because your positions were in the open ( which remained so ) and risked so you tried what ever you can what ever the losses to strengthen your weakend positions about the third army it wasnit in disastorus state and if we did our counter attack which the americans stopped we would have anihilated israeli troups in difrisoar at the end you would have lost big time

The Egyptian army couldn't hold even those poor 12 km under the cover of SAM umbrella.
Israeli forced crossed the canal in Deveresoir, flanked the 3rd army and destroyed all its long range SAMs.
Therefore if the war was to continue, the Egyptians would lose anything.
They knew it and asked for a cease fire.
Any Egyptian achievement was thanks to politics.

3rd army was in disastrous state.
If the Egyptians thought they can manage a counter attack, they wouldn't ask for a cease fire as they did.
In any stage of the war, there was no U.S threat to intervene for Israel.
If there was such a threat, it could be only be if Israel asks the U.S. to force a cease fire on Egypt and the Egyptians refuse.

The Sinai Peninsula is on Egyptian hands today, unlike before the 1973 war.
It doesn't mean that Egypt won that war.
When the war ended, almost all of Sinai was in Israel hands.
Israel had also a piece of land on the west bank of the Suez Canal
greater than what Egypt seized on the east.
Iwo-Jima is also in Japanese control today, and was in Japanese control before the American invasion of the island.
Is it mean that Japan won the battle of Iwo-Jima ?

his alliance with Russia and Syria, and replace it with alliance with America.
America forced Israel to accept a cease fire (1973), to withdraw from the canal's west bank (1974), to withdraw from another part of Sinai (1975), and to give up the rest for peace.
America is also supplying Egypt with arms since the middle 70s,

The CIA report that assumes those high Israeli casualties between 6/10 and 8/10,
was published only on 10/10/1973.
Therefore it is only an initial inaccurate estimation.
Israel's losses on both fronts between 6/10/1973 and 31/5/1974 (disengagement with Syria) are 2,656 dead exactly.

Saadat offered peace before the war
in condition of an Israeli withdrawal not only from sinai
but from all 1967 occupied arab land.
After he lost the war,
he decided to have a seperate peace with Israel,
and Egypt became isolated in the arab world.
Israel decided to give sinai for peace
because of heavy american pressure put on it only after the war,

The claim that Egypt avoided annihilating the Israeli forces west of the canal

Egypt was the one who asked the cease fire of the 22/10. Not Israel
Not even Syria whose capital was shelled.
We can argue forever whose tactical situation was better at the end of the war.
But if Israel was on bad condition, it wouldn't violate a cease fire, and give their enemy an excuse to fight back.
Israel violated the cease fire because they assumed they could win,
and succeeded taking thousands of POW.
Saadat knew he was loosing and asked them to stop.

Israel had a small portion on the east bank and a large portion on the west bank,
so the canal was not totally in Egypt hand.
Therefore operation Badr has failed.
These are facts about the 1973 war only in the Sinai:
About 1,700 Israelis dead vs 11,000 Egyptians.
About 200 Israeli POW vs 8,273 (according to the Red Cross)
Israelis seized more land on west bank than the Egyptians on the east.
3rd army was doomed.

Any one can claim he won any war by putting modest goals.
Hypothetically, Saddam could claim victory in the 1991 war if his goal was to scratch at least one American soldier.
If this was his goal, was he victorious ?
The goal of Egypt's operation Badr
was to capture and secure the entire east bank of the Suez Canal.
That would allow Egypt to activate the canal and gain economic profits from it.
