The version they recorded and which they subsequently left off the album is horrible compared to this one. It's probably why it was left off the album. Such a shame as this is a great song done this way. Sadly, they also made a mess of Twice if You're Lucky which is am amazing song too. They tinkered with it way too much and it isn't a patch on the versions played live in early '08.
@spoons99999 Strange, I liked the album version! The thing with bands like CH is that often live versions sound better than the studio: e.g. fingers of love. Hence, if you get familiar with the live version, the studio sometimes loses its power. I heard FoL live first, but TiYL firstly from the 'Intriguer' album.
I actually like Neil's Falsetto on this track. The fact that his falsetto is rough is actually what makes this song what it is.
He is always in key in this track when doing his "Falsetto", which is more than you can say for most live bands. If you listen to Chris Martin's falsetto (from Coldplay) his falsetto is pure, but he is a terrible live singer and his falsetto always sounds really weak in a song live - just listen to "Fix You" live.
@Tiawamutu do you know how well the song actually came out in the studio? when i listen here it sounds fantastic (save Neil's falsetto - sorry, Neil...) but the preview on Itunes sounds more subdued and perhaps, sadly, with less emphasis on the bass and synth line.
@HumansLib Did you purchace the album through iTunes? I did-just for the studio version of this. I think it turned out great. I'd love a really clean professionally recorded live version.
Here's the tracklisting: Archer's Arrows Saturday Sun Amsterdam Either Side of the World Falling Dove Isolation Intriguer Twice If You're Lucky Even If Inside Out Elephants ...can't see it, unless they've changed it's name (PLEASE!!!)
Imagine is a state of mind. A universal prayer. A glimpse of how things could be. Not his best song but no one else cuts through the bull a straightforwardly as Lennon. The simplicity is disarming and the message clear. Lennon was a rich man but still sings imagine no possessions with total integrity by using the device of the title. "IMAGINE". It's hard to express yourself this simply without a gift & it's a fine line between meaningful & cliché. Lennon gets it right naturally. No fuss at all.
very well put and understandable, its good to hear an intellectual musical response from someone for once, I think its Neils melodies that always stand out to me for their sheer bliss, he also has a sense of simplicity lyrically too but when you look back at songs Say That Again, Driving me Mad etc.there's still very few to touch him. I think what annoys me is when there is lists made of songwriters and Chris Martin and Noel Gallagher are in it and Finn isn't it's quite hard to understand.
@symmie666 Neil is in a different song writing league to both Noel Gallagher & Chris Martin. Noel wrote a couple of brilliant songs but got lazy/complacent as a songwriter after the second L.P. Chris Martin dreams of the day he can write a song as good as into temptation or even wonderwall. Alas that day will never come. It's all a bit too "nice" & same sounding, like his voice. I think Noel lost his edge & Chris never had any. Almost all of Neil's songs take you to a different place=Genius.
every time i play this after not hearing it in ages and BOOM!! it continues to blow me away. piano work and chord progression is fantastic. there is so many great tunes knocking about youtube. this new album will be Epic. Neil is the Greatest musician of all. No contest. Lennon who?
@symmie666 This is a great song. I can't wait for the new album but slow down there. Niel is a fantastic songwriter. Probably in my own top 10 but better than Lennon?? Really? I refer you back to your record collection.
i dunno i guess its a matter of opinion but i believe Neil has just went from strength to strength, and takes me to places no artist has ever has (although the Editors are makin thier way up that ladder), Lyrically even from early days Neil has been Poetic and Soulful, Lennon perhaps when in partnership with mcCartney but i never liked either of them on their own, but then again thats my opinion i always was a stones man myself.
@symmie666 You're entitled to you opinion but it was not just in partnership with McCartney that Lennon was great. Many Beatles songs credited to both are really solo compositions. Lennon's include most of the "Hard days night" LP "Help", "I am The Walrus", Lucy in the sky..", "Across the universe" , "Glass Onion", "Because", "Come together", "Julia". When you throw in solo work like "Imagine", "# 9 Dream" and "Instant karma" It's hard to place Lennon outside the top 3 songwriters of all time.
oh yeah im not denyin that he isn't and all the songs you've stated are super songs, i think there's quite a mountain been made here lol, i dont think Neil Finn gets anywhere near the credit he deserves is the point im more or less making, perhaps if he was british and dead there would be a bigger fuss.
Not British, maybe American. But I get the feeling that NF made the choice not to 'break' America in terms of getting on the treadmill of coporate-shmoozing etc.: perhaps after the 'Chocolate Cake' incident he felt it was better to build a 'select' and 'discerning' following instead - and I'm not being sarcastic about using those terms!
He is a lucky man, isn't he- I mean look at him, just over 50, still lean & full-head of hair- gorgeous to look at, and his talent, too- He's got the package.
wow a huge radiohead influnence on this one . you guys know that ed obrien and phil selway from radiohead performed with neil finn back in 2004 for some shows. they are huge fans
that's a good call- the new songs do sound varied from one to the next but all have that unique CH/NF thing about them. i totally don't hear a radiohead vibe in this one though!
You're very welcome. :) It's interesting how varied the new stuff is. "Turn It Around" sounds like something Radiohead would have written a few years ago.
My God... They look like they're having fun with this song. I hope they do this on their next album...Assuming there will be one.

HOW is this not on the record?!?!?
Maybe (hoping!!) they're adding it to their performance-only repertoire with Throw Your Arms Around Me? (please!!!)

To be fair, Noel Gallagher has spoken of his admiration for NF. One good point for NG - he has good taste in songwriters!

If you could shout loud enough, and your hearing was good enough, you would get millions upon millions of responses all supporting Imagine.

Yeah, the recordings of those live shows are just amazing. I was also wondering whether it was that interaction that led to some mutual influence.

I hear Radiohead also... the synth line in the background is very "Airbag" or maybe "Kid A" era sounding. Thanks for the video!

Yes, that one too ;) Rhyming 'photograph' with 'aftermath' - pretty smooth! Lucky is the other one I like.
