guys we've got to figure it out! its the BEST invention for car manufacturers! sells 'economy' but the car's life is very very shorter....! the clutch, the engine itself, the fuel system, the battery off course, the ignition system are all badly affected! so who is the one whos winning in the end???
I've owned a BMW 118d before and the start/stop worked great. Not sure about long term effects but than again most BMW buyers don't keep their vehicles that long.
This is ok with cars like the honda with the starternator (by valeo) etc e.g. no conventional starter fitted but unless your in really slow heavy traffic I think the savings are negligible.
VW did this on the Golf in 1982, no one liked it then and I would refuse to buy a car with auto-stop. It causes the starter motor to wear out in half the usual time, wastes fuel by constantly starting up and is annoying to use.
The battery life suffers too. So what you think you will be saving is taken away from you again.
That is so bloody annoying. I thought the engine will just turn back on without the starter engaging. I think business that do starter rebuilds will love this but not the drivers.
Also, why do they call this a system. Any car can do this, just switch the bloody engine off. I cant believe the car gets a cleaner image with stuff like this.
Right, all fine in theory, but what happens when the car gets a little older? You know when they need more time to start, or fail to start at all. What does this do to the wear of your battery and startermotor? Doesent your battery run out at some point of your in a city densily populated by traffic lights? I can see a thousand ways this will bite you in the ass, and i argue the fuel and thus carbondioxide saved with this.
@kthebay That is exactly why VW tried it in the Golf in the UK during 1982. People didn't like it and reported so many problems that it was quickly put to one side and forgotten about. On the golf you put it in neutral and after a minute the engine stopped, if you put your foot on the clutch it restarted. Well it was terrible!
It uses more fuel, strains the battery and starter and car electrics, fuel pump etc. This technology is VERY OLD and the patent expired, so everyone is at it now!!!

Well quick fact here Did you know that the most gas burn during driving is starting the car -_-

The BMW which it's engine is not UP is not considered a BMW.
So who is thinking of saving some drops of gas , better get another car.

Great, now with this start/stop/start/stop/start/stop your car battery lasts only 2 weeks.

The only thing I don't fancy is the diesel engine sound.
Otherwise the Start/Stop function is OK; mine is a series 3 gasoline,
over 1 year now; I feel OK with this function, no failure yet at 17000 KM.
There are actually 2 start motors, one main and one special about 5hp for this function; the main one never stops.
The auto-stop and a manual push to the Start/Stop button is not the same.

Can't be good for the engine, stopping and starting all the time?

whats the point of turning on and off the car you waste more gas like that
RobertoEscolero1995 1 year ago
Ingenious but weird way of tackling emissions. You would think it would promote premature wear on the starter motor?
