I picked up a litre of the new Teacher's today as it was reduced in Asda, to give it a shot, just poured my first measure and and personally I think it is still a great blend. It's not as rough as Grouse etc, more complex flavour too.
So, I went to the liquor store on this cold snowy day to find a bottle of Aberlour A'bunadh, but was unsuccessful. Also been looking for a bottle of the Laddie Ten, but it's selling out everywhere. Despondent, I strolled over to the blend section, and there was Teacher's, which you've recommended numerous times.
This is the bottle with the new label, 1L. I really like it! Seems everybody's down on the quality recently, but maybe they're just really inconsistent? I really like it.
Hey Ralphy, I love your reviews! I have a new label/bottle i picked up Jan. 20 and some left in my last bottle(old label) and side by side i like my new bottle better! I taste less caramel and more mature malts, smoother- less raw grain, richer palate and mouthfeel, more velvety... A step towards Chivas and JBB IMHO. Could it be smokier!?! I hope it's not a batch variance thing! I do miss the old bottle tho.. Try a new one before you buy the hype Ralphy, I think Robert Hicks is our true friend!
Less reliable as a scotch as of January 2012? Can you be more specific? The last bottle I bought was in March 2011 and as always it was fantastic considering the price, etc. What has changed? Should I buy another bottle to see for myself? I need more information :(
@ralfystuff Will you review a new bottle? I personally think it has improved, but I'm no sommelier. I have one of each and think the newest is smoother, smokier and has a longer finish. I've heard alot of folks bash the new batches but I dont know if they've tried it or it's hearsay. You're a whisky champion Ralphy!
I saw this review and thought that I should give it a try, but then I read the comments... Has Teacher's changed something or what's up? Is it still worth it to try it?
Recently bought a bottle of Teacher's with the new label. It is not the same (in a very bad way)!!! I even bought a second bottle to make sure it wasn't a fluke. Do you have any thoughts? Have you had a bottle recently?
it is increasingly obvious that the producers of Teacher's are being inconsistent in batches, . . . and disrespectful to their customers. This is unfortunate and I will mention this soon.
I totally agree with this, I bought a bottle from the LCBO one week ago and it was utterly horrendeous, had to throw in a lot of water to be able to gulp it. It also gave me a pretty bad stomach ache and headache.

I'm surprised with the high score for the arguably cheapest blended whisky you can get in london. I've always avoided, and I think I will continue to do so to be honest.
Teachers is def one of my fav blends. If you can find it, William Lundie & Co. distills and bottles a very good single malt Speyside whisky that costs about the same as Teachers, if not a tiny bit cheaper. I very much enjoy it when I can find it on the shelves where I live, but it is usually sold out due to high sales volume.
@ghampton106 - hmmm....didn't finish my thought. I'm blaming that on the Jim Beam Devil's Cut. Anyway. The single malt I was talking about is Lismore - good stuff....about $22 a bottle here in the Central US...for the money an excellent value....as is Teachers....
Just came back from a months long tour of bourbons and rye's. I also tried Te Bheag and a nice bottle of Laphroaig. I'm now back at my trusty old Teacher's Highland Cream. It's truly a terrific blended whisky. I enjoy it more than Elijah Craig, personally. I also think it has more of a single malt mouthfeel than Te Bheag, while I quite liked that whisky. It really does have a malt character. A terrific mouthfeel. In your opinion, how much Glendronach is in it? I like the Ardmore.
Well I had enough of it...its a lovely whisky however recently I came across Teacher's 50 12 years old, I hope you get it in Uk here in India its available for a reasonable price. Very smooth a lovely whisky, better than the highland cream...:-)
I disagree with your review. This is the nastiest, most disgusting whisky I have ever tasted. Disgusting. If anything deserves to be scored less than 10, it's this whisky.
I have a bottle but im uncertain of the year. I think it`s from 1972. It was gifted to me from a non drinker. I have a little taste every year. I wounder if the newer bottles taste the same.
What about reviewing Black Dog, 100 Pipers, Black and White, Vat69 and Old smuggler bleds. These are easily available in india unlike our own Amrut whisky... :-)
I'm generally a single malt drinker, so not always sure which blends to trust - but your review got me interested & I gave it a try, and I must say I was quite pleasantly surprised!
Also, I live in India, where single malts are hard to come by (I rely on duty free + visiting friends importing stuff for me), whereas Teacher's is quite readily available. Also, you may be interested to know - it's bottled at 42.8% ABV for the Indian market. I'm sure you'd approve! :-)
i tried this out my parents cupboard today and safe to say i just don't get it, tasted horrible to me im only 21 so maybe an age thing? my parents dont drink it either they just seem to have a collection of spirits for some reason
Whisky is off-putting if you have a sweet-tooth and a sweet/salt diet which most folks in the modern World have, I suggest you have a wee glass with some water to make it more accessible. No point in a Spirit Collection going to waste, but do let your folks know before you tuck into their stock !
Hi Ralfy, I was dry for 10 years due to religious reasons, but 5 glorious months ago, I couldn't take it any longer and went back to my old love, when I was 18 years old. Quietly sipping whisky. I've since tried about 7 different brands of bourbon, and now scotch. I've been acquiring the taste of scotch and I must say, I'm absolutely loving it. I just had my first glass of Teacher's H.Cream and I was amazed at how different it was. Thanks for the great reviews, I've subbed and will watch closely
All I know about Passport Whisky is that it is a standard, generic Blend and fine for mixing with soda during the dry season. Look out for Amrut from Bangalore, ... a very good Indian Whisky.
Teacher's Origin is worth the investment and I hope you enjoy it if you buy it.
This is a great "every day" whisky for those of us not rich enough to drink single malts on a regular basis, and those of us who want a good spoonful of peat to help it all go down. I prefer it over Johnny Walker or Dewar's.
hi there ralfy would you say this is a good blend to buy if your just geting into scotch and are looking for something not too chalenging but smooth and plesant to drink?
Teachers Highland Cream has been my introduction into scotch, along with Grants Family Reserve. I find the grants a bit better, but the teachers is very tasty.
Sipping now Teacher's Highland Cream - wonderful stuff for this low price (in Bulgaria - 7 pounds). As you said - high malt content is highly perceptible on the palate, it is gentle, rich and not so raw on your tongue like some other blends - I love it. It offers a decent bouquet of aromas. I found my blend. This whisky was always very unappreciated in BG, hence I never knew this stuff about it, thanks for sharing your experience with us!
Ardmore seems to be suiting me a little too well, I'll need to get a timelock for the cupboard. Bought at £20 on the basis of "non-chill filtered 46%" and 'quarter cask' finishing, "PEATED" almost put me off, I am full to the brim with Islays. This is one of my better buys, I don't see any chance this getting dusty.
@TheBeebopper Like a morning quickbread, 'scone before the dust settled. Of course by the time I got back to the shop, the shelf marked for £20 Ardmore was empty. I need to trust my first impressions more at this price.
Great review, totally agree with you about there just being a touch too much caramel flavour but I tend to think that about most blended whiskey’s. I love Teachers though, it is definitely my favourite of all the reasonably priced blended whisky's.
Hey Ralfy, i've learned a great deal from your reviews, thanks!! i'm a bit surprised that you haven't reviewed anything from the famous grouse... im just getting started on scotch, and was wondering what you think of the blend.
@ralfystuff The famous grouse for me is a great blend. The standard one is just an average blend. But the famous Grouse Black is an outstanding dark , peaty blend , one of my favourites. Id also recommend the SIlver Grouse but its only available in select parts of Asia. I only say this because I respect your opinion so much and wonder if you have tried the Black.
@Futre4 I found the black dissapointing at first, just whisky with smoke, nothing appealing. Came back to it a couple of weeks later and it's better, still not outstanding, I've bought better for the price, but certainly not the flop I first thought.
@1977Futre One of the few whiskies I've bought at full price, so I'm not making straight value comparisons. Considering it is a pound or so more than the regular full price basic blend, then yes I believe Black Grouse makes a good buy. A much more rounded product than "The Famous". It seems to have a dominant sweet malt character with a pepper finish. I feel I coud spend a good few hours with this whisky alone.
Recent Teachers Much Harsh. Very spirity. And flavor like not holdup. Poured on grass. Teachers now has this in a COLA CAN. Does this indicate anything at time I bought this one? Because Teachers was no mixer. Delicous malt layer and smoke and refreshing pour -mmmm. Maybe its the grains not the ardmore. My Question does this poor grain mean all the other starter non aged blends suffer too on global blends?
TEACHERS was wonderful drinking straight. Can only drink 50ml max per sitting is only Complaint. Maybe another brand maybe (no black bottle here). I notice a frequent 2010 cheap blend comments saying not as good and much BURN on some brands. Is there are Storage of something? How do they keep up quality if the bottle is in every corner of global and population always gets higher?
can anyone recommand Ardmore Traditional Cask? Its meant to be the main malt in TEACHERS. Are there other smokey malty creamy buttery cheap blends widely available or is teachers just it. I do not like tangy fizzy tangy.
I live in Brazil and i personally like this whiskey very much, here people tend to not like what is cheap and maybe because of the tropical weather the 45% malt fells more harsh than usual. But i think that for the price i would never buy a Johnny Red instead of a Teachers. Teachers has a very strong flavor to it that most blended whiskeys don't have.
My first choice for blended whiskies. For a budget, this whisky is a true miracle. Far more superior than any of its' range, in my opinion. Can't believe that a bottle of "Red Label" costs twice as much than this one! I haven't encountered any inconsistencies yet regarding quality but hey, I'm no expert. Regards to everyone and hail to the Teacher of them all, Ralfy!

Ralfy, I bought a bottle of Teacher's just today, due in no small part to this review, and I cannot thank you enough. It costs less than a bottle of Jack Daniel's, but it is worlds apart! I have found that a mix of 3 parts Teacher's and 1 part Jameson Irish whiskey is an excellent drink. Anyway, thanks for the recommendation, what a truly enjoyable and affordable whisky.
This is very very disappointing - caramel and brown sugar, brown sugar and caramel. There is barely anything else. Maybe some smoke but it's completely dulled by the caramel. The Black Grouse, even though it has an initial grain stink at least provides enjoyable moments and flavours for around the same price. Was this blend score influenced by nostalgia for an old favourite dram? Anyway I still look forward to all your (almost always) excellent reviews!!
Thanks for your response Ralfy. I have also seen really divided views on Teachers on whisky message boards. Many people seem to rate it as a good blend with complexity and smoke, and I've also seen many reviews complaining of a dull, cloying, flavourless dram. Maybe my palate isn't developed enough to detect the complexity and smoke here. Do you have any plans to review budget single malts like Batllehill, Macleod's regional series, Macphails Collection etc? These can be great!
Sorry I have to add a dissenting voice - yes there is clearly a malt influence in this whisky but it is very rough around the edge, and the finish is really horrible at times, probably because of the caramel - just looking at the colour of it make me feel sick. I'd try something like BNJ instead or just pay another few quid (maybe 5 more if its on offer) and get a (any) single malt instead.
Thanks for your entertaining reviews Ralfy! I'm in South Carolina, USA. My bottle of Teacher's doesn't say 45% malt. Does anyone have an idea why that is missing? My favorite Scotches so far are Laphroiag and Talisker. Teachers's is a great blend, but my mainstay blend will be Black Bottle. Thanks for introducing me to that Ralfy. Cheers!
Hi Ralphy, I bought some Teacher's based solely on your review here. I'm so glad I did, in value for money terms I've yet to taste a whisky as good. Thank you!
my god its smoke and peat with a sweet tone, honey and brown sugar wow its great you should review it again that would be great! 93 out of 100 blend mark! thanks again Ralfy! Fantastic!
its so interesting my last comment is how can this be a cheap blend that is good? well I can honestly say I now drink this often and its my fav blend. I have come full circle. its one of the best blends that I have ever had and 1 batch of JW black was better but the last one was bad and teachers is really good all the time so thanks to you ralfy!
Hi there, thanks for nice reviews, I bought Teachers few days ago and I must say It´s very good stuff. But one thing is interesting. When I smell this from glass, the aroma is worse (for me), than I put my nose direct in bottle. Smell from bottle is MORE smoky and heavy, and I like that. From glass I can smell fruits. I wish I can drink from the bottle (only joking:-D )
HI! Very interesting and informative especially to a neophyte whisky drinker like myself.. I do house sales and cleanouts, and I just came across a wooden case of 12 Teacher's Highland Cream 4/5q bottles sealed; any takers? What do you think the value per bottle would be.. from the late 50s early 60s I think. Thank you! -vP
Got a bottle of Douglas Laing (McGibbons Provenance) 11 yo Ardmore on the go.. You are spot on with your comment on Ardmore Ralfy. Its got a bit of pep,not for the faint hearted :) !!
I find it very interesting that you gave a higher mark to Teachers then JW black because this atleast at my spirit shop JW black costs 4 times as much as Teachers. Is your score strictly on taste or do you take price into account?
I picked up a litre of the new Teacher's today as it was reduced in Asda, to give it a shot, just poured my first measure and and personally I think it is still a great blend. It's not as rough as Grouse etc, more complex flavour too.

@aphasia2
... 40% vol: alcohol, ... 45% Malt content in Blend.

@ralfystuff
Ralfy, the bottle I picked up today now says 43% ABV. Granted, it's not 46% but 43 is still a small improvement.

Pretentiatae illuminati may blow until truly inflaetede.
With ''Hints of Hebriddean pearle & Shetlande Blossomme''...
Teachers of Glasgow doesn't pretend. -It's a good, tasty whisky that real people can afford.
-Ande finde at they're locale shoppe.
Glencairn glasses, pirouettes, smokeys, fragrante la-la's & ''heavy'' B.J.s are beyond me and most people.
We just want to enjoy a nice whisky & not be made to feel inadequate -having not detected the finest notes of Faraoe ginger blossom

@goldenyama
... it seems that your bottle is very different to the one I bought and reviewed recently.
Batch variation can be a serious issue for whisky producers and I recommend that you e-mail Teacher's directly expressing your disappointment.
They need to know to sort out these problems as it is being discussed publicly on-line.
.... I hope you have better luck with your next Whisky, ... or whatever you decide to buy.

@goldenyama
... I regularly review more economical whiskies and will continue to do so.
Teacher's Blended Scotch varies in quality .... too much ! and too much E150a caramel is being used.
They should watch they don't put people off completly !!!
ralfystuff 1 year ago
@goldenyama I agree, I don't really detect any peat or smoke here. Still nice stuff tho.

Thank you!

its so interesting my last comment is how can this be a cheap blend that is good? well I can honestly say I now drink this often and its my fav blend.

I wish I can drink from the bottle (only joking:-D )

.... try different shaped glasses till you find one that suits you.
Glencairn Glasses work for me.

Thank you! -vP

I find it very interesting that you gave a higher mark to Teachers then JW black because this atleast at my spirit shop JW black costs 4 times as much as Teachers. Is your score strictly on taste or do you take price into account?
Tantrum777 2 years ago
.... JW is very expensive for what it is, a competent 'iconic' Blended.
Teachers is 45% Single Malt from Ardmore, and opens up with a little water.
JW doesn't ....
... my scores are personal 'overviews' including quality, ... nose and smell to a significant degree.

gonna pick up a bottle tnight. thanks.

Great review. I usually go with a Kentucky Bourbon for my economical choices, but I will pick up a bottle of this next time out.
