DON'T GIVE THE REPUBLICANS ANY BAIT! Obama needs to firmly support gay marriage NOW otherwise the Reps will always drag this out in every election. If the Dems put an end to it once and for all by framing the arguement as "Equality" then it will resonate better to the masses.

Lionel was right in saying that Obama needs to be elected first. Look, you're right in saying the framing needs to change. But, like Lionel says, there's way more ambivalent minded people out there than you'd think. If another Rep gets into office, kiss the Supreme Court goodbye. THEN what do we have? Patience, wait a few months until the election's over - then once Obama is in office, he can get everybody the equality they need.

Polls state that a majority of Americans already support some kind of civil union. Besides, Obama isn't reaching out to the conservative Right. He wants the indecisive independents. Gay equality isn't the wedge issue for most Americans. They are more concerned about the economy, Iraq, and high energy prices. If anything, gay marriage will win Obama more votes from independents who don't feel he really is the CHANGE candiddate.
