Well, you can't ask "honda or yamaha" because everyone has their choice of brand. But to look at the specs of bikes, each brand has a certain bike which was #1 for that certain year. Like the Kawasaki kx250f was #1 for 2006, then the Honda CRF250F for 2007, 08, 09.. 05 was yamaha i think.

For a first bike i'd probably say something around crf150 F not R, or something around there. Depends on your height aswell and if you have knowledge of how to ride at all
