And that's why you can't teach someone to drive a steam locomotive on a simulator! It's all seat of the pants stuff. A bit more regulator and that could've been a serious slip! Great stuff.

is it common for engines to encounter a bit of slipage when departing Plymouth?

Its from a standing start,
on an uphill gradient
on reverse curves
and on damp rail.
Wouldn't expect any slippage on a dry rail but it's always a spectacular sight whatever the loco and whatever the conditions.

I live near Plymouth and spotted there as a youngster. Slippage was regular with single engines on a heavy load
