@hermanwahsletn that is because the iPhone works to the electricity in you're figure. the metal thing will conduct the electricity and give it to the cotton which makes the iPhone work. (you need to lick the cotton to get it wet, the water is what actually conducts the electricity.

You can shape the conductive foam into a pointy end and than you have yourself a custom drawing precision pen :) That's what I did since there really is no stylus for HTC droids to use on cool drawing apps.

Actually you could also make a easier one out of tin foil and a pencil or a stick. Just wrap the foil around a pencil or a stick etc. about a quarter to about half of the item you are using making sure that the main tip of the item is covered as well. Then when the tip of your 'stylus' is covered, make the surface flat by banging it on a table or something. To use simply place your fingers on the other end of the foil and there you go!

@ starlite952 it would help with some games. Typing is easier with thumbs than a stylus but a stylus would help with games where you have to angle something, like Angry Birds. And a stylus is a lot thinner than your thumbs so like when reading something you would be able to see it better. Although this would defiantly not help with Tap Tap Revenge or using multitouch.

The touch screen is capacitive so it is to do with the build up of electrons, Using a conductive material allows the electrons to move into the material. They do not need to move far, just enough so the capacitive layer can detect a change in capacitance. This is then immediately sent to the processor to work out size position movement etc, Any conductive material will do even an insulator providing it allows sufficient electron movememnt. The simplest is moist tissue.
