I just found out my 10 month old macbook pro does that but it's not that loud..as long as it doesn't poop out or ruin the cd's then i can handle it lol. But does anyone know why it's doing that?
My regular Macbook sounds pretty similair.. I think its just normal because they are such powerful drives. My fix was a cheap $40 USB Drive from Walmart that I keep in my desk, doesn't make a sound . :D
We all know how much Apple hates optical media. That's why the put optical drives in MacBooks. So you put the disc in, and -om nom nom- -cut- -scratch- -razor blades- (Sexy woman voice) "Your disc has been destroyed." -eject-
I have the same clicking sounds on my white macbook when I insert and eject a disc. But otherwise it reads the discs smoothly and they come out without any damage. I hope nothing is grinding away in there. Is this a typical noise?
yeap mine was like that and it just stop working.I hardly use that drive because I use the usb to transfer data , i could even count how many times i used it.Its a piece of crap drive.
I had this issue on a White 2007 model MacBook with some CDs, eventually it progressed into the drive not reading some CDs, and eventually, the drive failing all together. If your computer is having this issue. Contact Apple. My new unibody MacBook Pro seems to have a better drive in it.
i had this exact same problem with my macbook 13 with all disks. after inspection, i noticed only the very outside edge of the disk was rubbing and when i carefully held the laptop level, with the disk spun up, then lightly moved the right side toward the floor, the sound went away briefly(the loading slot faces the right on my model). i could kind of get a feel for where the disk was rubbing, luckly mine was near the loading slot.
part 2 i opened the topcase and lightly pried up on the top front edge of the loading slot of the aluminum drive housing. no more noise. if you try it be gentle. better to do a small amount at a time over and over until it gets quiet. unless you're familiar with just how little force it takes to snap apple's white or black plastic, i'd suggest not trying this at home.
part 3 most importantly, i think these slim drives can get pinched easily. don't press down, grab, pinch or squeeze anywhere near the loading slot when you move, pick up or rest your hands on the laptop even if it's not turned on. i love 'em, but macs seem to be the least durable portables, getting more and more fragile with every new model, kind of like people. jim
I had that problem on my MacBook Pro before. My Superdrive would not boot some discs so it spits them out very often. I went to the genius bar to get my Superdrive replaced. After that, it made a different sound and booted all the discs I inserted. Get yours replaced too.
My macbook has that weird loading noise too. It makes a little noise when I am playing a disk. But what causes that CRUNCH noise when I put my disk in?
My MacBook Has that horrible poping noise when i load a disk then only one pop when it is ejected.....if it ejects! But it didnt have problems playing disks. It was 2 days old, I sent it back and they are SUPPOSED to be sending me a new MB.... did you have any problems getting it fixed?
MAJOR problems. Basically, Apple refused to admit there was a problem and wanted me to send my 1 day old mac for repairs - 3 weeks without my new laptop. Obviously I refused and after 20 phone conversations with the Apple people I finally got a case number which then allowed me to get a new mac as part of the DOA thing. Several months later the trackpad died (and I use a USB mouse 90% of the time!) - this time I decided to send it out for repairs.
My only advice: be extremely nice to them, but persistent. We have many, many macs at our work and they fail more often then, say, those cheap Dells. Macs are cute and sexy, yes, but they are not problem-free - and to be honest, Apple tech service is not the best either. Cheers.

It is doing this noise when you insert a "broken DVD". When it is some scratches (well, for mine), that's doing this noise...
For cleaned DVDs, it runs good.

so true!

Mine did that once, however it was due to a severely scratched disc that I put inside. I have never had this happen with a normal disc

My 2008 unibody Macbook recently started making this noise and my burns would fail quite often.
The only thing stopping me from getting a replacement is the fact that I cannot afford to go without it for a few days.

Have Apple replace the drive for you. They will make you believe the noise is 'normal' - it isn't!
