It's fun looking back but I'm affraid Danny picked the wrong outfit! He looks quite similar to Herman Munster in this attire! Great talent though! Fun innocent song!
Thanks for posting this. I lost my orange Pre Dog Night Danny Hutton album in a flood. I missed all of the songs so much, and now I can hear a few on You Tube.....
I liked this song and Danny Hutton I must admit was quite the talent but when I see this particular video I see Herman Munster! Perhaps the times but the outfit was a poor choice!
Actually the first triple tracked vocal to "hit" was by Les Paul and Mary Ford, more than a decade earlier....... "How High The Moon" a #1 in 1954 and many others used the multi-tracking process invented and pioneered by Les Paul.

The host of Shivaree, which was done in L.A. at KABC-TV and syndicated in 1965 and '66, was Gene Weed, who was a popular DJ at KFWB channel 98 from 1958 to 1968. Gene later went on to become vice president of television for Dick Clark Productions and was in charge of numerous big TV specials, awards shows, etc. produced by Dick Clark. Gene Weed died in 1999 at age 64.
this song & an animated version of him was used on the sixth season premiere of "The Flintstones" when Fred & Barney are turning channels & get nothing but rock music & dance shows
Never cared for Three Dog Night (out of step with the rest of America), but loved Danny Hutton's early solo act. I didn't even realize it was him singing on One is the Loneliest Number. I loved the child-like early Beatles simplicity of Roses and Rainbows, and the schizo orchestration of Funny How Love Can Be, with the lively renfaire stomp. (Elizabethan instruments)
Every Shivaree vid on YT has dancing girls in the background. Does it mean that if your song was not upbeat, (a slow romantic number, for example) you didn't get on Shivaree.
Hutton's debut disc was written in an attic and originally titled "Rome Wasn't Built In A Day." Hutton changed the title when he saw a book called The Rainbow and the Rose (by Nevil Shute) and filled and title around. "Roses and Rainbows was a breakout song in various parts of the country but only made it to #73 nationally.
I played in dance bands throughout the 60's, and I never heard this song. Didn't even know Danny had a solo career before 3 Dog Night. Can't say I like the song. :(
I think the first time I heard this song was on KRLA or KFWB radio in Los Angeles I do not think Boss radio was on yet. I remember as a 9 year old walking into the furnature store on Washington Bl. just south of the old Culver Center and getting them there. Back then they sold records in furniture stores. The Surveys were free.
@khj93play What a special time! I'm your age and from Inglewood (Manchester & Crenshaw), a couple of miles away (born @ Daniel Freeman), and remember a sky-writing plane spell out "Welcome Beatles" for their upcoming concert at the Hollywood Bowl, August of '65. Sound familiar?
@laaxe I remember the first time I saw the "Meet The Beatles" album. My next door neighbor came over and showed me the album cover and my first impression was.."these guys look kind of queer!" You have to remember before the Beatles, men were using the jet black hair slicked back like Elvis. What sold me to them was their sound not their looks. In time I got use to them and became a big fan!
@khj93play Yep. the old (Kiss in white-face) almost mandatory R & R "image" thing has been around since Ramses The Great!
I wound up in music, mostly because of the Beatles, and that damned album which my slightly older uncles had. Little Justin Bieber looks frighteningly like he belongs on that cover. If he could only back it up with a few hundred great songs...
Great song and im holding the double LP in my hands.Anorher good song on it was Laugh,Laugh, Boss Jocks Robert W, Morgan,,Sam Riddle,Bobby Trip, The Real Don Steele,Humble Harve,Tom Maule,Jonny Williams,Frank Terry.Good music back then.
Thank you for this clip. I loved this song and what a thrill to see this clip. An obvious one hit wonder and unmistakably the vocal sound that was one part of the great three part harmony of Three Dog Night in years to come. Excellent.
i remeber when i was9 i was the "Flintstones".fred was channel surfing cause he hated rock&roll.anyway one of the channel he turned to had this guys singing this song(all cartoon of course).after all these years i never knew the singer or song.but i loved it.i wasnt playe here in nY
This was great to watch. I love this song. I was seven when it came out. That was the year I started buying lots of records! Danny had such a great voice. All of my cousins are 10 years older, so I was listening to the music along with them. It was a great time. The song was very popular in Chicago where I grew up.
@blacksunfish Great observation. Either that or he looks like an adult film actor. I don`t know if its because I`m in my 50s but those dancers in their "mini skirts" are hot.
It's clear from this vid that Danny was the brain child of 3DN. He was happy letting Cory and Chuck take the spot light. He was too busy arranging and directing the sound of the band.
Been there many, many times! also, a little known night club in Seal Beach called The Marina Palace, two half-round steel buildings that were painted psycadellic, it featured a revolving stage. the Doors played there, Stevie Wonder, The Seeds, The Byrds... I grew up less than a mile from there.
Wow , I use to manage bands in So Cal , I remember Marina palace well , it had a revolving stage for 3 bands , An old geezer named Robinson owned it, The only way a local band could play there was to play a Bowie song during your audition, lol Wow , what memories
OK, here's more. Dancing at Harmony park, Disneyland at the Tomorrowland stage, The Pavalon on Huntington Beach pier, The Rendezvous Ballroom on the Balboa peninsula and lots of other places in good ole Orange County.
@ltdave32 Jonnies name is gone and your right , it was turned into a used car lot, then they tried to demolish it ( illegally I might add ) They were stop and as of about 6-7 months ago they turned it into a Bob"s Big Boy and retained the Broiler sign And you right the dancers were hot
they just don't make girls like that anymore, they're adorable!
I'm an electrician, and I had the contract to wire supermarket across the street from Jonnie's about 3 years or so ago, thats' when I saw it as a car lot. I'm so glad to hear they have turned it into a place to eat again, and retained the sign!
Hey this is a Flash fro the past...along with gteraka...I remember a cool band at Pacific Ocean Park-Battle of theBands...the bloomin' Flowers!...did great covers!
Gosh, those were the days. I graduated hs in 1965 in Southern Cal. Yeah, I remember all the muscle cars. They used to gather at Oscar's Hamburgers. Wow! We'd sit in the lot and watch fantastic cars drive thru. Once I drove a friend's new 64 mustang thru. It had a factory custom 427 engine, headers, quads, American mags, and a 4-speed trans. Yep, just like the movie "American Graffiti".
We would go to the beach at Playa Del Rey and turn on the radio and listen to KRLA and KHJ all day. Didn't go to Oscars but we had a place on the west side called Johnnies and Titos. Great Pastramis and Tacos. Both places are still there on Sepulveda near Washington Place and both do great business. Johnnies is still retro with the old jukebox.
@pubsterguy -----Actually, Oscars had a few drive-ins in the area. The one we drove thru was in Garden Grove, on GG blvd. just east of Beach blvd. There was another in Santa Ana, just off Grand and another one in Fullerton on Harbor near La Palma. I heard of a drive-in called Harvey's out your way.
yup, he was a KHJ disk jock as well, as kids we would lister to Johnny Williams at night since he did the all nighters at KHJ. It was the only time we could call that station and request songs. I remember requesting a song called "The Joker went Wild" by Brian Hyland.
Brings back memories of that summer when I use to hang out at the local gas station with my friend drinking sodas while the radio played in the background and watching people cruise in their cars like in American Grafitti.
Gracias por volver a poner este video, ya que es fantástico. Era apenas una niñita de 5 años cuando sonaba esta canción y aún la recuerdo......... bella música.
I was in High school when this record came out and working at a bootleg radio station ..KOS RADIO..as a DJ..I remember, I had 2 'Pick to Click' s during our short-live exsistence. 'Like A Rolling Stone' and 'R&R'... What a lucky guy I was!!..except, RS was a huge hit, and, the better song, IMHO, was Roses and Rainbows, was not!! I love this tune to this day, which is why I'm posting :-).
I love the creepy effect that is accidentally achieved by the degeneration of the film footage. At 0:18 it looks like there are three ghosts dancing behind him.
johnny p ~ if you told me the greatest drummer of the era was playing I'd have to agree and say yeeeeah man. It could only be one guy ~ Hal Blaine. I'm from NJ and even us East Coasters know that your Cal. DJ Art Laboe is one of the all-time greatest platter spinners! He started the OLDIES BUT GOODIES album format in the late `50's of which I still own a few. Saw TDN many times back in the `60's and no bands of the era could touch `em vocally and the band was sensational. GREAT POP TUNE
I was living in California in the midst of the 60s peace/love generation and this classic done by the one and only Danny Hutton reflects the free spirit that life in CA exhuded!
i remember hearing a clip of this song on a flintstones episode when fred was changing channels and getting pissed cause there were nothing but music shows if im not mistaken this song was released on the hanna barbera label correct me if im wrong ,
This is a great mid-'60s pop song; I like it a lot better than any Three Dog Night track, and I liked most of their many singles. Note the outstanding work by the drummer here.
I don't want to give my age but I was at this very taping of Sharee. Never understood why this track never did better than it did. Also attended tapings of Shindig and other 60's television shows. Great fun in those days.
This is the reason why youtube is great.I had this single when I was like 10.Forgot the artist but I remembered the title....Wow,did'nt realize it was Danny Hutton from 3 Dog Night.....
WOW, I hadn't thought about KHJ in quite a while, but you're right -- this song was on a "KHJ's Top 10 Hits" album which was released in about 1971. I had the album, way back when.
i had boots and a dress like the girls dancing . For a little kid I was pretty hip. Only 7 at the time. I listened to all that stuff . Had an aunt 11 years older than me that I spent a lot of time with. She introduced me to all that. Frankie, Bobbie , Fabian .... I could go on
Together Danny Hutton, Cory Wells & Chuck Negron were the best singers of their era. Bar none, period and pointblank! I saw them perform their tribute song to the DOO-WOPS, the classic "Good Feelings 1957" in 1970 at Avery Fisher Hall in NYC and I'm telling ya I got goosebumps from the incredible blend of their soaring voices. These cats could chime!
OMG! I've been looking for this song forever! My Dad recorded in Dexheim, Germany when he was stationed there. He recorded it on his Sony reel recorder and I grew up listening to this! Thanks!!!
I just LOVE Youtube! Would you believe that this is the first time I have heard this song since the summer of '65? My heartfelt thanks to whoever posted this rare gem.
@squiffydoodle It's contained on a double CD of the 3 dog night and songs they did prior to forming. I'm sorry i don't have the album in front of me to tell you the exact title
One of the greatest non-Billboard chart hits I've ever heard. Right up there with the 1967 tune "The Flower Children" by Marcia Strassman ("Welcome Back, Kotter").
I love this song. It's one of the first 45s I ever bought. I was 12. I heard it on American Bandstand. I had to special order it to Canada. I forget the label up here...maybe MGM.
They are in all the Shivaree clips. For a nice close-up look at Teri doing what appears to be some sort of stretching exercise, type "Gene McDaniels A Miracle" into YouTube's search engine, and click on the result. She appears at :48 and then again at 1:26.
I first heard a snippet of this song on an ep of "The Flinstones" (the one when Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm sing). I "Googled" the lyrics and found out about this song, then I searche "YouTube." Glad I did--about a 90 on the Dick Clark Scalel
Miss Pammy, Mr. "Marketting Genius" Hutton was the bigger jerk - he screwed Chuck out of his share of the royalties to all the Three Dog Night songs. But what else would you expect from 2 junkies, desperate for money to support their $1,000-a-day habits? They're both much better people now, though.
I REMEMBER THIS CAT WHEN HE LIVED IN LAUREL CANYON, AND HE WENT ON 'THE LYODD THAXTONSHOW" IN l.A., FIRST ONE THAT WORE 'harachies"[sandles/w/ old tires for soles] and had long ass hair. Was always a genius on marketing, rock & roll!!! tiapromo
You were probably born after 1970. This dude later was one of the big singer in Three Dog Night, a super group of the early 70's. That was after the Beatles broke up.
This is a great mid-60s song. It debuted on the Top 100 chart on 10/16/65. It lasted only 6 weeks on the chart peaking out at #73. Too bad, as it was a great ballad and great music.
Danny Hutton had 2 hits on Los Angeles radio, this one on the Hanna Barbarra label and "Funny How Love Can Be" (a cover of a tune by UK group The Ivy League), on MGM, which also had a sprightly, upbeat arrangement.
Awesome!!! Never knew this video exsisted. Thanks for posting it. This is what makes You Tube special. I met Danny several years ago, this song still stands up to this day as a classic. Boxtop, you are right, you don't hear this song on oldies radio. Thanks Danny for all the great songs through the years!!!!
Great Post, One of my favorites releases on Hanna Barbarra Records, boths side of this great record are Amazing. If one loves the A-Side, try to hunt down the B-Side Monster Shindig. Truely a Gem of a record and a great find. Thanks! Leonardo
This is such a Beautiful song & so Beatlish that it could have easy been up there on the charts next to any Beatle song that year in 1965 but!...As usual,Damn lack of publicity from record company's or The band's own management not moving thier own asses fast enough to take advantage of the moment. Just Read about the band
"BADFINGER" from the 70's & you'll know what i'm talking about.
It's fun looking back but I'm affraid Danny picked the wrong outfit! He looks quite similar to Herman Munster in this attire! Great talent though! Fun innocent song!

Brings back memories of that summer when I use to hang out at the local gas station with my friend drinking sodas while the radio played in the background and watching people cruise in their cars like in American Grafitti.

And, Thank you for posting the video...drf

johnny p ~ if you told me the greatest drummer of the era was playing I'd have to agree and say yeeeeah man.

This is a great mid-'60s pop song; I like it a lot better than any Three Dog Night track, and I liked most of their many singles. Note the outstanding work by the drummer here.

They are in all the Shivaree clips. For a nice close-up look at Teri doing what appears to be some sort of stretching exercise, type "Gene McDaniels A Miracle" into YouTube's search engine, and click on the result. She appears at :48 and then again at 1:26.

How cute he was here, today he is a handsome older dude, and still playing great, unlike the jerk Chuckie
pamhagerty 4 years ago 2
Miss Pammy, Mr. "Marketting Genius" Hutton was the bigger jerk - he screwed Chuck out of his share of the royalties to all the Three Dog Night songs. But what else would you expect from 2 junkies, desperate for money to support their $1,000-a-day habits? They're both much better people now, though.

Danny Hutton had 2 hits on Los Angeles radio, this one on the Hanna Barbarra label and "Funny How Love Can Be" (a cover of a tune by UK group The Ivy League), on MGM, which also had a sprightly, upbeat arrangement.
