  • Ah, the romance of steam....This film was directed by Michael Grigsby in 1959. It (and lots of other interesting films from this era e.g. "We Are the Lambeth Boys", "Momma Don't Allow" etc etc) is on a BFI 3 DVD box set called "Free Cinema". I just ordered it at a special offer price from them so if you want it, do it now before it becomes unavailable.

  • I commenced my railway career in Australia in early 1974; steam was gone by this time. I well remember the drivers recounting their time on steam and expressing (in no uncertain terms) how dirty and hard the work was. This magnificent film has captured the essence of what they were alluding to. Maybe the next time we speak lovingly of steam we should spare a thought for those who worked in these conditions; some of them their whole working lives. Thanks for the post mikevalesenior!
