  • Just as well as Durantee commanded a stage he also could hand it off. So professional as to bring out the best of those around him.

  • @offstride That is a hallmark of a great stage performer - bringing out the best of guests!.

  • What happened to eddie hodges?

  • @billpst An extract from Wikipedia - After being drafted to the Viet Nam war and his discharge,Effie earned his B.A. in Psychology and an M.S. in Counseling. He occasionally gets in touch with his old show business friends and still writes songs, though he is unable to play guitar due to spinal nerve injuries. Hodges rode out Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and informed his fans that he was fine ....He enjoys hearing from fans and makes occasional appearances around the USA.

  • Who is the kid on the give my regards to broadway clip?

  • @billpst Eddie Hodges

  • There seems to be a real warmth on these old shows. The stars are worthy of the name too. Today's artists could learn a lot from them.

  • @hawkmoon03111951 You are so correct .

I think Jimmy said it best about the audience

"These are the people that inspire" !!

  • I'm quite sure, 'Hold', that the December 6, 1959 Sullivan show exists (either on videotape or kinescope) in the Sullivan/Andrew Solt archives...of course, there were no such luxuries as "DVR"'s or "time shifting" in 1959. The best the average viewer could do was record the audio portion from your TV set on a reel-to-reel audio recorder while it was telecast...or, if you were someone like Red Skelton, had possession of a reel-to-reel video recorder [cumbersome AND expensive!].

  • @fromthesidelines I just uploaded some Red Skelton videos.

    on my misterstereo channel.

IUploaded is a clip with Ed Sullivan introducing people like Dick Powell other hollywood folks and a one of Red Skeltons characters from 1954.

  • Jimmy Durante was 66, Ray Bolger 55 and Eddie Hodges 12 when this show was broadcast in December 1959 -- two years before the first of Eddie's string of six hits was released. They were "I'm Gonna Knock On Your Door" (#12 in 1961), "Bandit Of My Dreams" (#51 in 1962), "(Girls Girls Girls) Made To Love" (#14 in 1962), "Halfway" (#116 in 1963), "New Orleans" (#44 in 1965) and "Love Minus Zero" (#134 in 1965). The first, third and fifth are quite good and highly memorable.. .

  • This info is appreciated and I placed it in the video info area.

  • Familiar with his song recordings but never appreciated how fine a showman he was on stage. Good gags and timing; this grainy b&w clip from 50yrs ago is still entertaining - and that's not nostalgia talking!

  • @TheDinoBeans I, when I first previewd this show was equally impressed with Jimmy Durante's "stage presence"

    Lloyd

  • Durante. One of the best. Sing, piano, comedy. Knew how to use a stage. God bless him.

  • @offstride Agree 100%

    A talented person, for sure

    Lloyd.

  • Originally aired on NBC's "SUNDAY SHOWCASE" on December 6, 1959...directly opposite "THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW" on CBS (his guests that night included Lionel Hampton, Teresa Brewer, Jack Carter, classical violinist Yehudi Menuhin [and sister Hepzibah, peforming a duet with him at the piano], Wayne & Shuster, The Vagabonds...and "The College Football Coach Of the Year").

  • @fromthesidelines That was quite the night.

Lucky that we have DVR's and time shifted channel accesss to watch both programs.
