First of all, revolvers? what the fuck? secondly, everyone hated hamilton. He was a pompous ass that had the potential to run the country into the ground. Thirdly, Burr's intention was not to kill Hamilton, but Hamilton hair-triggered the pistols. Burr, not expecting this, fired accidentally before he could properly aim.

If you'd done any research at all, you'd know that the hair triggers were part of the gun's original design, and while Burr didn't know about it, Hamilton told his second not to set the hair triggers as it wouldn't be fair. Hamilton was not the 'pompous ass' antifederalists brought him down to be.

But it isn't like Cain and Abel. What prompted Burr to initiate the duel was that Hamilton had slandered him. It was about defending his honor, not hatred or jealousy of Hamilton. Also, it is very unlikely that Burr meant to kill Hamilton. Valid historical accounts point to an accident, especially given Burr's behavior before the duel, where he hit (he'd probably aimed for the hip, a common target in duels if you didn't want to do any harm, and missed), and his immediate reaction.

I don't argue that Hamilton made more of a difference in history than Burr. However, I still think Burr's reputation was unfairly smeared after the duel, and I'm not sure what historical contribution has to do with that.

I would call him a talented but confusing man who made some pretty stupid mistakes and yeah, some of Hamilton's comments about him were founded. The humor in this really springs from its very inaccuracy.

Sorry but I thought this was pretty silly and didn't find it even ironically amusing. Burr was actually a pretty interesting fellow and the stories of infamy are actually a good lesson in history being written by the uninformed. Yes, there were Limbaughs and O'Reillys in those days too, but they were even more effective than today's slimers. Read the new book on Burr if you get a chance - Fallen Founder. One of the best Burr bios ever written.
