Awesome tutorial dude ! It worked like a charm. But my only problem is that my textures aren't affected by light, they do not cast shadows. I used them as wall textures. I tried switching between "VertexLitGeneric" and "LightmappedGeneric" but none of them gave me the desired effect. with lightmap the textures are just bright with no shadows at all and with vertexlit, the lightning changes as I move around in the map. Please help me with that. Thanks.
How come myn duplicated? I made a texture but instead of making a floor like you, I made a picture like who the map was by, I did 256x256, but when I put it onto a 256x256 wall it duplicated a lot, how do I make it just ONE? Thanks in advance
the units of the texture and the units in Hammer Editor does not nececarily need to be the same.
In your case, you want the texture NOT to be tiled, and only shown once on the surface. This is pretty simple, Select the "Toggle Texture Application"-tool in hammer editor, then left-click the surface where you placed your texture, then in the box that appeared with the tool, click "fit" (it's a really small box) and it will not tile anymore.
when i make an decal it works fine when i place it as an decal its fine but i cant rotate so i make it to an overlay and it looks fine in source sdk but blinks black/gray and then i run the game with the map and the decals are gray or black! help please?Its a blood decal btw
I'm not a pr0 with making all different type of source materials. my tip is to just check out an existing .vmt file for a blood decal and just copy that whole code, but replace the $basetexture to your custom one

You will need to include the textures (and all other custom content) in the .BSP file. Google for Pakrat. i think that's the program that lets you do that. not sure how to though. I recall doing it once and it was pretty easy to understand.
i DO NOT reccoment using .jpg since it destroys the image. .jpg is only good for photos, and should never be used when doing textures or other stuff like it.
For best results, use .tga, but .png is what i prefer, since it has almost no quality loss and it is small in size.

just because you put the map on an usb or if you upload it, that doesn't mean the textures and other custom stuff come with it. You need to upload that too, and put it in the correct folder

@MornedilReply I know I do use photoshop. Quite a lot actually. But the whole reason I stopped using ps is because I ran into a brick wall with the shadow levels. What tools did you use?
i marked the darker areas with the lasso tool with a high amount of feather (to soften the edges), then i adjusted the lighting levels by using curves (ctrl+m)

pink/black checkered texture means the game can't find the texture.
99% of the times this happens is because you wrote something wrong in the file location section of the VMT. Check it, usually theres just a coding error there.

well, you could just make a light blue/gray square (you don't need to paint the details/reflections). then to get it slightly transparent, you will need to make an alpha mask and paint it in a solid gray color (black = completely transparent, white = fully visible). i don't remember how to do this really.. but google for "Valve Developer Community" or what it's called.. they explain everything

My suggestion is for you to google it, or go to the valve developer community (google for their website). I think it's mostly about the coding in the VMT file. But you will probably also need an alpha mask for the texture to filter away what you want to be transparent.

If you want anyone else to play the map (example if you want to upload it) you will have to include ALL files, including BSP, VMT, VTF and all other files. Either make a .zip folder and upload, or use pakrat.
I don't know what's causing the problem. All I know is that APPCRASH means that the application (program) crashes.
So, are you using windows XP, Vista? Mac? Linux? That might be the answer. Or maybe some files are missing. I'd google for "Hammer Editor+(your system, example: vista+problem)", then I'd try to reinstall it. But again, I don't know everything about Hammer editor.. Google is your friend
Well, it is pretty obvious that everyone who has the map will also need the textures. You don't have to use pakrat though, but it is advised as it will automatically extract the files when the user runs the map. Another way is to put everything in a zip-folder, but that is NOT advised, since the user will then have to extract it by themself. So pakrat should be used.
#1. Yes, that is possible, but not too good because if image sizes are different it's harder to work with them in hammer, so you should make the image size to either 64 x 64, 128 x 128 or 512 x 512, depending on how much detail the texture needs.
#2. that depends on the program you use and how you to it. A smaller image = less detail but smaller file size. Always try to get the size as small as possible.
#3. No. You are wrong. I have created textures from other file types with VTFedit.

well. a pink/black texture is always because you wrote the wrong file location inside the vmt.
Example: let's say you wrote this: "$basetexture" "1214sos\wood_floor"
then you MUST place the .vtf & .vmt in "materials/1214sos" and the .vtf must be named "wood_floor.vtf"
If your texture turns out black/pink - always double check the vmt and folder name.

this is done in Hammer Editor, not in the texture attributes.

you mean how to pain the glass in a painting program like MS paint or photoshop?
well, you could just make a light blue/gray square (you don't need to paint the details/reflections). then to get it slightly transparent, you will need to make an alpha mask and paint it in a solid gray color (black = completely transparent, white = fully visible). i don't remember how to do this really.. but google for "Valve Developer Community" or what it's called.. they explain everything

also, you will need to write certain codes in the VMT to make it look like a window. all those codes are found at the valve developer community

My suggestion is for you to google it, or go to the valve developer community (google for their website). I think it's mostly about the coding in the VMT file. But you will probably also need an alpha mask for the texture to filter away what you want to be transparent.

Ok, i did the texture, but the vmt and the vtf are in my computer, i need to use the pakrat to put inside of bsp? or when i compile the map the texture will be inside of bsp too?

If you want anyone else to play the map (example if you want to upload it) you will have to include ALL files, including BSP, VMT, VTF and all other files. Either make a .zip folder and upload, or use pakrat.

you did something wrong in the file location in the VMT file (the text document with code).
Check 09:12 .
Make sure it is exactly the same. You probably did some sloppy writing. The reason it is pink & black is because hammer can't find the image.

I don't know what's causing the problem. All I know is that APPCRASH means that the application (program) crashes.
So, are you using windows XP, Vista? Mac? Linux? That might be the answer. Or maybe some files are missing. I'd google for "Hammer Editor+(your system, example: vista+problem)", then I'd try to reinstall it. But again, I don't know everything about Hammer editor.. Google is your friend

Well, it is pretty obvious that everyone who has the map will also need the textures. You don't have to use pakrat though, but it is advised as it will automatically extract the files when the user runs the map. Another way is to put everything in a zip-folder, but that is NOT advised, since the user will then have to extract it by themself. So pakrat should be used.

You need to actually know a few facts before making a tutorial
#1 the size of image texture does matter it has to be any number to the power of 2
#2 Croping the picture makes the quality of the texture go down because resizing it causes distortion
#3 The image has to be a tga or else its impossible to convert

#1. Yes, that is possible, but not too good because if image sizes are different it's harder to work with them in hammer, so you should make the image size to either 64 x 64, 128 x 128 or 512 x 512, depending on how much detail the texture needs.
#2. that depends on the program you use and how you to it. A smaller image = less detail but smaller file size. Always try to get the size as small as possible.
#3. No. You are wrong. I have created textures from other file types with VTFedit.
