Absolutely reprehensible. A tragic failure in every department, particularly the acting in which Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Rhys Meyers redefine the term 'execrable'. For Woody Allen to choose two young actors of limited or no ability after a lifetime of working with some of the best actors around is astonishing. Quite apart from all of this the story and the script are shockingly inept. Easily the worst Woody Allen film of all time, which, given his recent output, is quite an achievement.

I agree JRM and SJ's acting wasn't very good... but it was a solid three act film, with excellent dialogue, and an intriguing plot ... also the composition was beautiful, with some really nice camerawork, cinematography, editing etc... I thoroughly enjoyed the film and I like that he basically turned crime and punishment on its ear by ending the film on such a grim note where life is essentially declared meaningless with no chance for justice or redemption.

People just cant accept the truth, it is easier to live rich than poor, but then accepting it at any cost would make us look like the bad guy. This movie shows us what doing the wrong thing can do, even if he never goes to jail he will have to live with what he did.
as expected from someone with your views, you've missed the point entirely. there are ways to appraise someone's life which have nothing to do with how hard or easy it was. it can be argued that those merits are ultimately more important than how easy you made your life to live, considering the effect it has on the lives of others. kthxbai
This movie is just that, it makes you think about the morals you have. Clearly he does not want to give up his comfortable life. My opinion is clearly related to the movie.
perhaps, though if you ask me, this is just another story of selfish people who ruin lives because they can't keep it in their pants... a situation which in real life is usually neither romantic nor poetic.. but whatever, i'm really done this time. feel free to get the last word in.
Personally, Allen's ending is much more nihilistic than moralistic. Remember, Chris isn't really repentant, as shown by the "dream" sequence in which his victims/conscience confronts him. He ultimately escapes any form of punishment and like in Allen's earlier Crimes and Misdemeanors seems relieved that he is able to live the life he desires.
This is what makes this film so great (and incredibly pessimistic), it discards the traditional crime conventions, where the villain is punished for his deeds, instead choosing to portray a character who ultimately overcomes his guilt and lives the life of the family man. It's a bleak ending, no matter which way one looks at it.
just one observation, I understand the detective had that "dream", not Chris... so you can't really know if he is sorry for what he did basing on that

Jonathan Rhys Meyers was just too effeminate to convince us of any passion for Scarlett.
The other tragedy Woody Allwn directed with Ewan MacGregor & Colin Farell was better, if you like that sort of thing...
...personally, I find life tragic enough without paying for it when I go to the cinema or rent a DVD.

People just cant accept the truth, it is easier to live rich than poor, but then accepting it at any cost would make us look like the bad guy. This movie shows us what doing the wrong thing can do, even if he never goes to jail he will have to live with what he did.

as expected from someone with your views, you've missed the point entirely. there are ways to appraise someone's life which have nothing to do with how hard or easy it was. it can be argued that those merits are ultimately more important than how easy you made your life to live, considering the effect it has on the lives of others. kthxbai

This movie is just that, it makes you think about the morals you have. Clearly he does not want to give up his comfortable life. My opinion is clearly related to the movie.

perhaps, though if you ask me, this is just another story of selfish people who ruin lives because they can't keep it in their pants... a situation which in real life is usually neither romantic nor poetic.. but whatever, i'm really done this time. feel free to get the last word in.

Personally, Allen's ending is much more nihilistic than moralistic. Remember, Chris isn't really repentant, as shown by the "dream" sequence in which his victims/conscience confronts him. He ultimately escapes any form of punishment and like in Allen's earlier Crimes and Misdemeanors seems relieved that he is able to live the life he desires.

This is what makes this film so great (and incredibly pessimistic), it discards the traditional crime conventions, where the villain is punished for his deeds, instead choosing to portray a character who ultimately overcomes his guilt and lives the life of the family man. It's a bleak ending, no matter which way one looks at it.

Movie is brilliant first hour and a half, but then... man, totally waste of time. Woody tooked his chance to play with storyline and directing-just like in movies. I was hoping for different end, something like in real life!

Really? It looks like a remake of 'A Place in the Sun' with Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Cliff, and Shelley Winters. I would swear this movie has the same plot. You should see it, tell me what you think. After I saw 'Matchpoint', I said to myself, he copied.
