I am partially vegetarian because I have never liked to kill unnecessarily. I am also studying biology, and I can tell you that there is no alternative to animal experimentation in order to learn about, let's say, Wnt pathway, which is usually defective in cancer. People do not understand that the experiments done in biology are not meant to torture animals but to learn from that biological system, and yes, these experiments most of the times end up killing the animal.

However, the animal or organism chosen for research is not random, but there are reasons for which to use a particular organism. These reasons usually have to do with physiology, genetics, morphology, etc. I encourage the people who is against animal experimentation to do further research on why these organisms are chosen for experimentation, and once they become sick, they could choose whether they want to be treated with techniques obtained from knowledge obtained from animal experimentation.

@pebbles92able What do you think about experiments on mice? A lot of what we know about human diseases has been learned from mice, and mice are much more different from humans than a monkey. If you were better informed, you wouldn't say that experiments in other species are pointless. A model organism is always needed for any biological research, even for malaria research, for biologists need to learn about the cycle of the parasite in a non-human subject.

@djhz2001 actuall real doctors have admitted that vivisection is unmandatory. Everything that works and cures mice has been inoperable to humans. Real statements directly from them. Even the pharmaceutable companies confessed it while being held on trail and sued for accumulating medications that were fatal to humans. Dissection is useless.

My mentioning about me being vegetarian was referring to the point that one avoids hurting others, including animals, but survival comes first, and this is not something new, even for animals.

Finally, the way I see it, I think that letting millions of people die of starvation and diseases such as malaria (for which there is not enough research being done because the people who are infected with malaria are usually poor and therefore it is not profitable for pharmaceutical companies to invest on working on a cure for it) is worse when we constantly throw food to the garbage and kill other human beings in other countries over who will get the natural resources.

@torre12 In answer to your 2 questions 1) Some people work in labs because they work hard to protect the animals as much as possible, for instance making sure the animals have water, food, clean cages, when other researchers don't care. Or they stay in labs so they can speak out against unnecessary and cruel treatment of the animals, and that humane standards are followed.

Animal experimentation is not simply about saving humans' lives. For one thing, the tests are very often NOT about studying disease nor human ailments. And if the tests are for studying disease, the controversy is the fact that there are scientific alternatives to studying disease, not all medical labs use animals in this day and age! There have been alternatives for decades! Also, they do tests that have already been done 1000s of times! They know the caustic chemicals, but test over & over.

From what I read in a paper, there were over 80 protesters at the UCLA Campus, but only a handful were let into the office.

Look at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

They test things that have already been tested, or have vaccines for.

They tested and found a cure for cancer in mice, yet it has not worked on humans.

They have found a vaccine that would slow down the effects of HIV on monkeys, but it did NOT work on humans.
