I hope the sailor recovered well. We could speculate all day what the condition was, maybe something like appendicitis where emergency surgery was necessary. Whatever, the doctor was brave and so were the boat crew. Shows you that behind the veneer of sailor/submariner rivalry, when it comes down to brass tacks, a sailor helps a sailor no matter if he's surface or subsurface. A job well done.

That looks like a realy rough ride for the crew of the sub. (notice that they submerged to let the doctor do his thing). Hats off to the coxswain. That Zodiak could have capsized (broadside to the waves!) and they would have had a real mess. Cool Vid.,Thanks

I am a german sorry for my bad english... The sub is not in trouble. Its a type 212A with a crew of 27 sailors and the evacuating is a maneuver... just a training. The Marine (German Navy) have since WW2 no problems with her submarines.

@KritischerPatriot Bin selbst auf 206a Booten zur See gefahren, das is erst mal kein 212a und wir haben seid dem Krieg sehrwohl verluste gehabt, undzwar U-Hai.
It was not a training... there was a medical situation. The sub couldn't go ashore and we (the ship were I filmed from) had no helicopter onboard (The Dutch L-class frigates had nog helicopterdeck)
The sub was in trouble and it was not a excercise. There was no doctor onboard, the patient couldn't go ashore and there was no heli in the area to bring the patient to another ship for care. The patient was an essential crewmember on the sub, that's why the sub was seriously in trouble. Fortunatly it was not a life endagering situation.
There was a medical need to do this maneuvre. The patient could not leave the submarine. Otherwise it was easier to treat te patient onboard our ship.
By the end of WW 2 the German U boat fleet had been decimated by a combination of long range reconaissance aircraft such as the PBY Catalina and the Short Sunderland flying boat patrol bomber. The Grumman Goose was also a factor. By the end of hostilities only a few German U boats remained. The rest had been sunk, usually with the loss of the crew. In 1941 the U-110 was captured and the Enigma coding device was taken, along with the code books. This also hastened the demise of the U boat.
At the end of ww11 the latest Uboats far outmatched anything on the water, but the war was already won on land. They would have seriously kicked our asses if the war on sea would have carried on.
In Übungen passiert soetwas regelmäßig.
In 2001 antoher type of this class (U24) managed to fire a spread on CV Enterprise, during a training mission. (pic on google)
The USA claimed earlier, that it was impossible to get in shooting range of their most modern CV. The admirality was furious, when U24 surfaced right next to the carrier.
However, U24 is far outdated, compared to Germany´s new class S212. That is worlds most modern uboat and Israel just got 4 of them (S214 export class)..
Yes that's correct, but "my" ship didn't had a helicopter onboard ..... it didn't had a helicopter deck. It was a dutch L-class frigate named "Witte de With".

"That Doc" was just our normal ships doctor, during the period we sailed, he came several times in action. This was one of his most exciting actions. He was not specially trained. I remembered that our CO asked him specificly if he wanted to do this because of the swell. There was no other quick solution for the patient, that the sub was going ashore was no option, leaving his sub by anymeans was no option and there was no heli in the area to winch any docter onboard of the sub.
