Rusty The Shaved Pomeranian

My parents shaved our Pomeranian several times growing up. His fur grew back perfectly fine and healthy and he seemed to have a lot of energy every time we did it. Probably not necessary, but it doesn't seem to really hurt.

Does his fur grow back right?...Everything I've read about Poms...including advice from my vet, says NOT to shave or clip their fur off....>Apparently, they say, that the Poms fur may not grow back right....therefor I've opted not to cut his fur.....I'm too afraid I'll ruin it forever!

@alabamajan i get my pom's fur cut at the vet every couple of months. he is miserable with it so long, and it grows back fine. i usually don't get him completely shaved, just cut as short as possible without getting out the razor. he has so much more spunk and energy afterward, and it gives me a break from vacuuming up all the hair!!

@tangerineskyline1 its because of their thick coats. In the summer they'll feel really warm, and anyways, itll grow back by winter

@StainGraffiti i never shaved my 2 poms coats they adapted to weather without needing to be shaved , trimmed is ok but shaving seems drastic .. its what attacts folk to the breed a beautiful long coat as long as its brushed daily.

I have a red pom that I just got a few weeks ago. His hair was so thick, and it was so hot out, I knew he was suffering. I got him the "teddy cut" like your dogs and he was noticeably more energetic. He is SO much happier! I hope all people with poms who live in hot climates do the same for theirs. Its wonderful and they shed much less too!

Bwahahaha...!! This looks just like my Pom when I had him sheared back in early May. He looked like a little teddy bear. The hair grows back a lot faster than a person might think. Plus, the sweet part is that bathing him when his hair is short like this is a snap--so much easier and quicker.

I get my Pomeranian, Toby, shaved a couple times a year. Usually in March and again in June. One groomer used to discourage me from doing that because she said it would ruin his coat, which it doesn't do. I think she just wanted me to have to keep bringing him back.

omgosh this is sooo cute! I have a pomimo (pomeranian-American Eskimo Mix) and have been thinking for the longest time whether or not to shave him- I still don't know but seeing how cute this makes your pom looks, I think the shaved look might look similar on my little pomimo...ha ha

My 9 year old Pom gets shaved almost all year round. We live in TN and he overheats easily, yes even in the winter. His hair doesn't grow back everywhere and never grew back to the original. It becomes coarser as well as more shaggy lol love the helmet on your Rusty!!

We always did that with our first pom (she died at age 14). She was an outdoor dog and she got burs in her hair, so we would just shave it off in the summer (we're in texas). We now have a 6 year old that looks JUST LIKE this one, and we keep her puppy cut in the summer and medium long in the winter.

Pom's can be shaved yearly in a warm, humid climates or say Arizona or Auzland.

They are Germanic dog breed, they served a utility purpose B4 Queen Victoria decided to have some bred to be smaller. They were called German Spitz Klein, Midle.

There fur isn't designed to keep heat out but heat in.

I actually shaved/trimmed mine down. He's a black Pom and he gets really hot. So the "protection from heat" comments are silly. He's just baking outside with his black coat. He was constantly panting and hot. So we trimmed him down to about 2 inches and he felt soooo much better. He was dancing all over and had more energy.

i agree with you on this, i have a black pomeranian that gets shaved around mid spring, i couldnt get him to the groomer early this year and it was late may and boy was he glad to get the hair taken off. poor little thing got so hot.

as a groomer i dont recommend shaving the coat. i know someone who had their pom shaved once a year for 6 years.. eventually the coat didnt grow back. it took the poor dog 2 YEARS to grow back and even then it was all whispy and thin.

They key is not to shave them too short, the hair not growing back can happen even if you shave them once. I generally leave 2" of hair on mine, just to make sure. In my opinion this is too short to have them shaved. My neighbors shaved their pom down and he is now all patchy and bald in some spots, and this is a number of years later.

Our pomeranians are getting older, and I've been slowly convincing my family to shave them over summer for years.

Now one of them has a heart murmour... I'm going to use it in the argument *for* shaving him (australian summers are hot) and will show your CUUUUTE pooch as example! (though I think we wont go for such a close shave.)

I think you'll only notice the tail for a couple weeks. The grow back their undercoat of fur first, and it all sort of blends in.  I just know that mine had s much more energy. Everyone noticed

This actually was shot with my webcam so my girlfriend could see Rusty with his new haircut while she was at work. The mic wasn't working. I fixed that later in settings. No audio, but I posted it anyway. Who knew it would get 38,904 hits so far. My luck, I add audio & repost, it wont show up on a search. My friends say the "Rusty Eats Corn" video is their favorite, and only 500 hits. Go figure

Check out on my youtube channel the video "Rusty Eats Corn On The Cob" That video was taken in February of 2008, after the summer we shaved him, and as you will see in the video, his coat came back beautifully! We adopted Rusty as a stray from the shelter, and his coat was mangy, but with lots of love & tlc, even the vet said he had one of the best coats they've seen. I love his coat, but he would get sooooo hot, and it's not that hot where I live, very moderate climate to colder.
