The radio in the video is fitted with an external aerial (approx. 3M of wire) but no earth. A later version is earthed. The power to the radio is supplied via an isolation transformer so I could earth the chassis which the aerial earth is connected to. You have to be careful with some sets (auto-transformers, mains powered) as the chasis could be live. In such cases the aerial is earthed via a x-rated capacitor. I found that earthing the set made a significant improvement in signal strength.

Thanks, I am trying to get it to fit in a vintage cabinet at the moment. I think the quality of the coil pack has helped to produce a good reception.
