Well, if you let the baby sleep all the time it will wake up and stay awake when you are trying to sleep. What will you do then? Not sleep? The baby is adorable but it is not cruel or unusual punishment to get a baby on a regular sleeping schedule that is in sync to yours.
I'm tempted to say that these guys are selfish and simply interested in getting a good night's sleep for themselves. I hope that this little boy has made it past this stage in good shape.

it is actually better to let them sleep when they are tired. If you keep them up, they get over tired and actually have a harder time sleeping at night. I am a mom and I know this. You need to think about how you would feel if someone was tryiing to keep you awake. Babies feel the same as us, they just can't articulate thier feelings. I am sure your baby didn't sleep that well that night. There is a good book called the No Cry Sleep Solution, you should check it out.
