@sneekylinux Nice overview, I've gone for using Sabayon for now after some hunting for a rolling distro. I've done a Arch Linux install from scratch before so this is nice and simple. Sabayon - It's really nice. I do love the idea of a rolling release. When I got it going as a hard install on my i5 8GB laptop it's using 1gb RAM Idle. How on earth is yours only using 125mb idle in the virutal box?
I installed sabayon 6 yesterday & it's pretty good. Takes a bit more effort to use than xubuntu but the help on the site is brilliant (I'm technically pretty crap so if I do it anyone can, though it's probably not for a complete newbie). Sneeky's comment about making it easy was directed at the installer which is indeed VERY easy, I'd say on a par with ubuntu (which for gentoo is really good). I like the idea of a stable rolling distro. I recommend giving it a whirl. Thanks sneeky for the vid.
Sneeky, why do you always spend the whole video dealing with pre-installed stuff rather than offering some basic, but useful information about the distro itself? Not only are you missing that, but someone might also get a false impression by watching this video alone: "based on Gentoo, not the easiest of basic installs to do or the quickest [..] takes a bloody age [..] Sabayon does it all for you, makes it easy" sounds like it's gonna compile a huge chunk of stuff and optimize it all by itself
@SeltsamerAttraktor ok mate, all i am doing is just giving you a taster of what the distro is about,if i have the time sometimes i will do more, and i have done in the past,as you would have heard me say in the video
@SeltsamerAttraktor If you dont like his, do your own. It would be good for me (the viewer) becuase I would be able to see YOUR opinion. Who knows maybe I or others would think more like you and get some more insight into the OS. We will never know ... until you do this yourself. As for "false" impressions" one could argue if the person even knows of Sabayon, what it is, who makes it and why, they stand more then a reasonable chance of understanding the install process, gentoo based os, etc.
@arsshaw I posted a quick overview of Sabayon's characteristics here as a comment (the 2nd one), but it doesn't show up anymore. IDK why.
I'm not going to do somebody else's work just because I criticize theirs, to help them do better and be more helpful. This criticism isn't meant as an attack on sneeky, just some feedback. So, no reason to deflect it in such a way.
Ive used Sabayon a few times, had it break on me through updates and have had it being awfully slow or using a ton of RAM, but I must say Sabayon has matured a ton since then, Installed this on a spare machine, And im liking it! :) BTW, great review, the "super as a super thing" gestures are epic :D
Gentoo took me 2 weeks to set up once. but nice....
