  • I know this version where kurt and mark sing this song together !

  • I think it was made it more famous by Nirvana, but both versions are excellent.

  • + kurt cobain

  • Lanegan is the man, his voice gives me the fear!

  • Please! Lanegan trumps kurt vocally, I dont care if he was in a more famous band.

  • This is fuckign awesome.

  • I think that instead of being discussing about who did it first, I would rather like to see another great band playing this song, 'cause today's music is full of shit, and what we need is music like this, another great band playing this song with passion, something that you dont find easily this days.

  • whos cares who did it first , this is brilliant as is nirvanas performance

  • kurt cobain accredited the song to lead belly but was familiarised to it by lanegan, even playing guitar for him while he sang it at one point. there are many variations of the song going back to the slave plantations!!

  • Im from the mountains of NC, and my grandmother used to rock me to sleep singing this song... in retrospect that sounds creepy, but at the time was quite soothing!!!

  • Lanegan wrote it in the 1700's then traveled thru time to bring it to you.

  • @tnuge1 Every singer worth his weight has time traveling abilities.

  • In spite of being written in the 1800's, Mark Lanegan still penned the song. No more arguments. You're all beginning to look very ignorant. That's right.

  • Leadbelly didn't write it - just popularized it. It's actually a traditional American folk song.

  • @StoneMagnet written in 1870 or something.. i heard

  • Err Lead Belly wrote the song in the 1800s.

Mark and Kurt bother covered it, Kurt did not get introduced to the song of Mark. Kurt was a Lead Belly fan Hence in the song when he sings it "he was my favourite performer well our favourite performer I think" Also he made reference to a guy from Lead Belly's estate offered him Lead's guitar for 500 thousand dollars as a joke. Being Kurts favourite performer he obviously would have bought the guitar if that was true.

  • it's an 1870 song from Lead Belly, Lanegan just introduced the song to Kurt Cobain

  • Mark lanegan did not write this song it was written in the 1800's but this is definitly the best version dose anyone know where to get it

  • On "The Winding Sheet" album

  • Simply amazing. Mark lanegan is a god amongst men.

  • i was there it was awesome

  • nice cover wish i was there
