This ad deserves an award. Office Max should keep running it. I think its right upthere with the classic commercials of the 60's and 70's. Rubberband man couldn't be cooler and what a smile!
Comment please: Idea -- OfficeMax brings back the ad campaign but with a white guy - they originally had an amount of negative feedback claiming stereotype black guy. After a short while they bring back Eddie Steeples. They also make one change in that the charactor says- "OfficeMax" at the end. - another issue was that people remembered the ads but didn't remember if they were for Staples, Office Depot, or OfficeMax. Publicity galore, good and bad-but on balance--do you think this would work?
one of the best commercials i can remember in recent times. i wonder how much money the spinners (or whoever the copyright owner is) got for this tune...quite a bit i'm sure.
very rare (if ever) that i get excited that there is actually a "making of / behind the scenes" of a bleedin' tv advert! i must really be a tv junkie. i must really "watch too much television" grand dad, you were right when you told my parents, "that kid watches too much god damn tv!"
The song, written by producer Thom Bell and Linda Creed, was about Bell's son, who was being teased by his classmates for being overweight. Intended to make his son feel better about his self-image, the song eventually evolved from being about "The Fat Man" to "The Rubberband Man".

Thanks so much for posting this. TOO COOL! LOVE the auditions! and loved to see that he gave so much more that DIDN'T make it into the actual :60 spot! That is talent! 5*s
HOLY SHIT!!!! This is the best video evaaaa! I heart the rubberband man. THis video made me laugh my ass off, and feel relieved they choose some of those white guys to be the rubberband man. Victory shriek!!! Ow-OW
I agree this guy was the only guy there who I would have choosen, the other guys didnt have that funk that went with the song....good to see him again.
During the casting part of the video, it just goes to show that (and this is NOT intended to be racist) only a black man could play the part of the rubberband man!
Loved this video. Shows a small part of the tremendous work that goes into making a one minute commercial.
Me too! Just can't get enough of Eddie Steeples. I guess cause he's sooo suave and debonaire. I can watch his comercial over and over. I wish they made more of them.
I absolutely love this actor and whoever created this commercial was a genius in my opinion. Thank you so much for posing this making of the commercial.
OMG!!!!! My collection is finally complete and I didn't even know this video existed!! I have finally found all Rubberband Man commercials and now this lovely production video to grace my MySpace page. Thank you so much Office Max for such an ingenious ad campaign that captured the heart of me and so many others with its hilarious Rubberband Man. Advertising will never find a better spokesperson(ironic since he doesn't speak in the commercial) than the Rubberband Man!!! LOVE IT!!!!
Comedy. I was looking for this about a month ago, amazed it wasnt on youtube. You have now made youtube complete. Soon, we will destroy the rebel..oh sorry went off there.
I laugh my buttocks off at some of the auditioners.
I work at Officemax.

the cast and crew obviously had a lot of fun making this. Eddie Steeples + The Detroit Spinners = formula for a perfect commercial.

I am surprised that Office Max doesn't either keep showing this, or shoot a new version with another funky song and the same character as the RBM.
This is about the most entertaining commercial in several years.

When that song was on the radio, even the white people danced!. I'm so glad Eddie Steeples did it justice. I love the Crab Man.
