@cocacola102491 I had the Media Home Entertainment VHS copy when I was young, and it ended with the diner scene involving John Goodman, too. When I first picked up the Anchor Bay DVD release, I noticed that scene was inserted in the middle of the film, following the shower scene. Part 8 of this post opens with the Goodman sequence that originally ended the VHS, and it's now branched in the middle of the flick instead of feeling like the obiligatory shock ending, which I admit I loved as a child.

So they sealed up most of the manholes and filled the sewer with gas, but as we saw in the movie, there are various other enterances to the sewers. The CHUDs were perfectly able to escape.

Also how did those two off duty cops get massacred in the diner when one chick with a replica sword was able to kill a CHUD? Those cops would have had guns or at least a night stick or pepper spray. The short order cook would have had some sort of cutlery in the kitchen, or at least a frying pan.

Have to give this movie credit where it's due, the plot is "here we go again" with the government more or less out to kill everyone and save a buck. The critters are decently done with the dark lighting making them less rubbery.

But the acting is surprisingly good, further proof that good acting can carry a movie and not rely on a billion dollar effects budget.

Then just as they thought it was all over, back to normal and safe, the movie concludes with a restaurant scene of people dining then suddenly the CHUDS appear at the windows and doors smashing the glass and that's the last you see, then you just hear a short burst of screaming then bit of wet chomping sound as the people are being eaten. The end.

Yeah it is cool but it makes no sense. When Walter is out on the street ordering the gas the police have already responded to the diner massacre. Then at the end it happens again. There's a new C.H.U.D. cult fiction edition that has the scene where bosch finds his wife's head and has this ending.

It's a blast reading all the positive comments about this film.That people love this film more than I do.I Remember seeing it in a grindhouse theatre in my late teens with a girlfriend. I think the "glowy eyed monsters" as Daniel Stern contemptuously calls them in the dvd commentary are brilliant. They seem very similar to Tom Savini's adult Jason [unmasked]. A whole army of Jasons. Their eyes are cool.I study them and think 'Theres NOTHING wrong with the monsters. Stern's fulla crap!'

Ah, yes. The original '84 theatrical version ended with that scene, but if you watch the film it dosen't make sense for that scene to be at the end. (There was footage of the diner massacre before that scene, oops!) Plus, it didn't have the zoom shot of the cop's wife's severed head on the pier.
