I had the pleasure of doing a Christmas/New Years gig with Mundell in Vegas at The Frontier Hotel back in 1974 with Harry James, Phil Harris, and Frankie S., Jr. I was all of 24 then. I have great memories and this video brought them to the surface. Thank you!
I love this - keeps the sense of melody all the way through - some jazzers seem to wail around aimlessly. And he has that great tone and blues feel. Piano player is not too bad either!
I first heard of Buchanan in a Rolling Stone article in the early '70's... watched this footage, I think on PBS, shortly thereafter... suitably amazed of course. This scene introduced me to one of the best and most influential guitar players you've never heard of, Mundell Lowe. Got to meet Lowe, and talk to him at length, about seven years later... one of the most intelligent people I have ever met.
does anyone know who the pianist is?

What a master. What an arrangement. Too bad he couldn't defeat his demons.

Buch playing one of my favourite standards - wonderful! And the Great Mundell Lowe looking on and thinking, 'Yeah, this guy can play jazz guitar!'

Buchanan is John the Baptist.
Gatton is You Know Who.
Lowe is their rabbi, Hillel.
