I actually saw a video of an elevator that is so old that instead of being called an elevator it's called a beltavator, and to call it instead of electric switches it had drum switches. Also when you get in the beltavator, it's not electric, to move it, you pull a rope. I just don't know the building address though.

What does the pit do, and does not having one make much difference? Also, how can I tell between traction and hydraulic elevators without seeing the mechanics?

A no passengers allowed freight elevator? Probably a large dumbwaiter. Why was it not working? Worth looking into the elevator shaft anyway. I would say that old preheat ligt fixture was cool.

Is it possible that this elevator could been homemade? Rare to see no pit and wooden guide rails instead of steel that are found on name brand elevators. And the doors looked like typical wooden outside screen doors that are on homes.

I am not really sure. the guy said it is turned off. I didn't take any chances to push buttons as it appeared to be open on the 4th floor.
