i first heard jim in my older sister's apartment. i immediately said, "i want to go to see HIM in concert" and she said "you can't; he just died in a plane crash" i had just discovered him, and yet i felt such loss. have loved his music ever since.
Jim did this song and "Old Man River" as demos for record companies and incredbly they all turned him down. A few years later ABC records signed him and he started having hits. Jim Croce, he just had a great voice and he connected with a lot of people.
I WAS IN COLOMBUS ,OHIO IN 1973-74--I HAD JUST PURCHASED JIM CROCE'S ALBUM--ON THE WAY HOME I HEARD NEWS FLASH THAT HE HAD BEEN ON A PLANE THAT WENT DOWN--HE HELPED ME LEARN GUITAR--JIMS ONE OF THE REASONS IM A PLAYER/WRITER. MISSYOU
@nickslife61 I grew up down the street from Jim and I started playing guitar the weekend we all lost him. It broke-up our high school. Many of Jim's teachers were still there. Though I'm not any kind of a writer, I wrote a story line through each verse of "You Don't Mess 'round with Jim". Have you thought about any thing like that?
@nickslife61 I lived down the street from him and my life took on a new direction also. Though I'm not where I'd like to be today, I did work a screenplay of the song that started it all, "You Don't Mess Around With Jim". It was easy for me because of my love and pain. Are you noted for anything we might know?
Jim Croce was the only thing my father would play in the car when I was growing up, and now here I am, 33 years old playing Jim Croce in the truck with my 2 year old son. Hopefully he learns to appreciate his talents as much as I have....doing my best to make it happen! Thanks for uploading all of these! Wonderful mix of his less noticed, but no less amazing tunes.
I have never heard this version. Amazing! Jim Croce had one of the most beautiful voices and ability to illiterate. Jim Croce does Motown.... how cool!!!! Thank you for uploading this gem...
wow ! never heard this. It's a wonderful testament to what a great singer he is. Often when people are appreciating his great singing they focus on the fact that the great lyrics he is singing are his , but not as often on how great he is singing those lyrics. He is a very gifted singer, with a beautiful voice. It is not easy or smart to invite comparison to Sam Cooke & Jim Croce totally pulls it off. These are fantastic covers of masterful originals.
what a buityfull artist! i cant get enogh from his songs!

I remember laying by a camp fire with some pals, playing Croce on our brand-new cassette players. I love it - thanks for a trip down Memory Lane.
