  • Sometimes when i'm asleep I wake up from a shiver or a vibration that comes suddenly and lasts for 2-3 seconds, and they stop once I'm awake. some people told me it's related to a heart disease. Is it true? Can anyone explain to me why I get these vibrations

  • Dear Khan, Can You make a Video based on Systole & Diastole ?? Greetings from Sweden

  • i agree until you you started talking about how the blood clots it doesnt actually clot around the plague that breaks loses it clots around the membrane that broke were the plague was builiding up until no blood gets to the muscles of the heart and then you have a heart attack.

  • What is the difference between this video and your other regarding Heart Disease and heart attacks?

  • coronary - Relating to or denoting the arteries that surround and supply the heart

  • Sal, i swear to god, if i become a doctor, i'll donate £1000 to khanacademy straight away.

  • @ro33han I wouldn't, his videos are generally good but the medicine videos are extremely basic and do not offer much practical application. I'm not surprised. He's clearly very intelligent but we can't expect him to know everything. He missed out the point that LDL has to be oxidised into a non-polarised molecule before it can come harmful.

  • sal instead of anatomy which is pretty easy once you have a picture book... would you guys consider PHYSIOLOGY OF THE BODY.... LUNGS, KIDNEYS, HEART, WITH ALL THE HORMONES AND DETAILS...

  • Excellent, excellent video. Only main issue I have (I'm a medical student) is that the LCA is not commonly blocked; the main artery occluded is the Left Anterior Descending artery (LAD), which is a BRANCH of the LCA (which is actually quite short).

  • wat tablet do you use?

  • how is there a dislike?

  • Mate this is the best video for MI on youtube period. you have earnt my subscription and like. keep em coming.

This was a very detailed video which i enjoyed

  • i used to mistaken MI for Asystole

  • why do plaques even form?

  • I have been a cardiac nurse for 15 years. How cool is this! I have a new educational resource. Thanks.

    Robin

  • Khan, I am a vet student, I already finished studying pathology. and I ACTUALLY learn something new here!

You are the most awesome teacher in the world.

  • PLEASE! more medicine related concepts please!

  • How does congestive heart diesease happen?

  • @Ferrus91 CHF occurs when heart muscle is too weak to pump out enough blood at one go. What then happens is that the sheer volume of blood backup overloads the heart and lungs (hence "congestion"). Heart failure by definition is the inability of the heart to maintain adequate output - so CHF = heart failure due to blood backup into the heart and lungs.

  • this is the first time I love biology!!

  • Thanks for the new medical videos! I was wondering when you were going to start going from transition from bio videos to medical bio videos.

  • Me again. Most myocardial infarctions are caused by plaque rupture, not by embolic plaques that block arteries downstream. A cardiac arrest is due to an acute, abnormal fast heart rhythm such as ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. The heart doesn't "stop" but beats so very fast that it doesn't fill or pump sufficiently to support the circulation and unless treatment ensues, a person would die. Heart failure is when the pump backs up, unable to keep up with the body's needs.

  • @6:25 you use the term thrombosis to refer to a blockage caused by traveling clot. While "thrombosis" is technically correct, it is perhaps better to refer to this as "thromboembolus" (or some variation depicting the embolic mechanism).

  • u rock man

  • Little point of correction Sal, the RCA and LCA are 'higher-up' closer to the aorta. In the video RCA is actually right marginal artery, a branch of RCA. LCA is left anterior descending artery, a branch of the LCA.

  • The bottom line advice is to keep your blood clean thin and vibrant!

  • you thought of this when you were a kid ? !!!!

  • I get those chest pains you talked about. Im scared now. Am i going to have a heart attack someday?

  • ONE PERSON DOESNT HAVE A HEART. :D

  • Im not sure If thats what I thought when i was a kid.... lol.

    IN KHAN WE TRUST!!!

  • There's also right-side and left-side heart failure w/ names of several different medical diagnoses; like atrioventricular block, bundle branch block and a number of other diseases and defects I have to go over in my memory every day lest I forget them.

We do continuing education on a nonstop basis, and they fill our heads w/ more and more conditions, as if they're in a contest to see who can give us the most information before our memory blows a gasket. That's how it feels sometimes.

  • And if anybody like fancy words, it's DEFINITELY most medical doctors. I think it's rude to talk to the patient like some of them do, using words they can't possibly know just so the patient will remember yet again who's the doctor.

Lots of doctors like to feel they're lodge brothers, so the speak in medicalese.

  • yay more biology videos! i'd like to see that play list grow!! Vids on adaptive immune systems= really saved me for my midterm, thanks Sal!

  • how can you know everything lollll. Khan, u're amazing :D

  • Thank you so much for the video!

  • I wish I had Khana Academy on a radio station, so I could listen to him every morning! Thanks for the informative videos Sal. Keep up the good work :) .

  • Secrete to not getting heart disease: do a daily run around the local park every morning.

  • from math to physics, from chemistry to humanities, from biology to astronomy..... and now human anatomy?.... Just WOW, I would give anything to have your brain.

Keep up the good work Sal.

  • Sal truly puts his heart into every video he makes. Oh wait ...

  • awesome sal! thank you and keep up the a and p videos!!!!!

  • his voice almost sounds like the Rev from KISW

  • Could you do a video on stroke?

  • I think he's referring to the Coronary System of the heart. I used to confuse it w/ the Conduction System of the heart.

I find cardiology fascinating. I watched an open heart surgery. When they opened the patient's chest you could see the heart beating and the lungs moving in and out. The patient was obviously a nonsmoker. A smoker's lungs are black and wrinkled. I saw it when I was an OR Technician. I thought I would vomit just looking at it.

  • Are you god?

  • Now I wish I had never eaten a Big Mac in my entire life.

From what I can see, once the plaque starts forming in your arteries, it's not going away. Ever.

  • so what exactly is "heart disease"? is it synonymous to "heart failure"?

  • @yamenhawit Heart Disease, Coronary Artery Disease and Coronary Heart Disease are all the same thing. Heart failure may occur because of heart disease.

  • @yamenhawit Yes, but some heart diseases come from congenital (from birth) defects like Tetralogy of Fallot, which can create heart disease due to it signs and symptoms. But that's probably TMI.

I'm a paramedic and, while I like the accuracy in this video, it's a beginning to understanding heart failure. It's a GOOD start but there's a monumental flow of information about heart failure that can't be included in one video.

That's why he has two others.

  • Is it legal to use these images in this video? I know there are free/cc anatomical illustrations, but they would have to be attributed... Not wanting to accuse anyone, just raising awareness of a potential problem.

  • @SalsaTiger83 this guy is backed up by Bill Gates, I think he's good!

  • @lalalaina4life Sal also won 2 million to spend on Khan Academy from Google

  • @SalsaTiger83 These are under creative-commons licenses. Got them from wikipedia.

  • @SalsaTiger83 The right two images are in the public domain and I attribute the left-most one in the description

  • @khanacademy thank you for taking the time to answer my maybe stupid question, I was just wondering because I wanted to do some anatomy-related videos.

  • SCARY

  • Always bake with oil (olive oil or sunflower oil etc) and not with butter

  • Once i had a chest pain, really spiking and vague.

I thought it was heart, but it was nowhere near.

A doctor explained that it was a spinal nerve inflammation, and it was not a big deal.

So if you are experiencing a chest pain, DO NOT self-medicate.

Because it might be a very different cause.

Just go visit a licensed doctor.

  • @SEThatered you should not self medicate if you don't know what causes pain.. it needs very critical assessment .. well unless of course if you are a doctor :-)

  • @TheArvinian01

What are you talking about? I visited my doctor right away.

I only wanted to pinpoint that my personal unprofessional flawed suggestion were completely false.

My heart is doing ok. My spine is just not straight, and that causes pain.

So i repeat myself DO NOT SELF MEDICATE yourself, go visit a doctor, if you have a chest pain.

It is critical to doit sooner, in order to avoid complications.

  • Scary shit. I'm glad I live a healthy lifestyle.

  • ooooooomg omg omg omg i wanna be a doooooooooooctooor omg omg

  • so, whats a stroke then??

  • @towldryer A stroke occurs in the brain, a blockage (for example a thrombosis) prevents blood flow to part of the brain causing loss of brain function or death.

  • @towldryer stroke an atherosclerosis have in common... but it is just happening in the brain, but the causes may or may not be same as atherosclerosis... it can be thrombosis anywhere in the body which can cause emboli that can be lodge in any small vessels in the brain which can cause ischemia or even hemmorage (if ruptured)

  • Sal, you should also add the fact that regular consumption of McDonalds is a leading factor to heart attacks

  • @rinwhr Yeah U r ryt! He must do one on macdonalds... His Video will ruin them forever.

  • Wow. We're actually doing this right now in class!

  • @beatleguy64 What's the name of your school... ?

  • Another great video!! I like the A & P videos.

  • i love how medical stuff has real wierd names,, i think i rather learn chemister terminology nice vid sal

  • i recommend this you tube page for those still in school , if your over 25 your supposed to know this

  • another 10 minutes of my life not wasted...

    Thank you Mr. Khan...

  • Excellent video.

  • Infarct is 'dead tissue due to oxygen starvation.'

Sorry. It's just that the doctor teaching the course had a hissy fit when we didn't use that exact definition.

I thought it was pronounced ANJI-na, but maybe they say it differently on the West Coast than the mid-West.

  • @vickiormindyb infarct means blood obstruction

  • Sal is the next Leonardo Da Vinci of the modern world! :D

  • You are amazing. A Renaissance man that knows a lot about everything.

  • another AWESOME video!!! many thanks!!! :)

  • @motogpslider: YES - very true!!

  • The coronary arteries being clogged isn't the only reason a heart attack occurs. Ask your wife if you don't believe me.

I'm just a paramedic, even though doctors have handed ECG interpretation over to us. They used to do it themselves; now WE have to do it for them, give them the interpretation and listen to SOME of them say we're "wasting [their] time."

There are several other types of heart attacks that aren't related to the coronary system; I just can't remember them, b/c I'm so exhausted.

  • Genius!

  • Hm. I could use this for Bio Class. Thanks!

  • So how are some people able to survive heart attacks and heart failure?

  • Wonderful video! Now I understand what Coronary Artery Disease is!

  • Hey thanks Sal! I have a test on this on Thursday! What were the chances of you uploading this now? =D

..Oh and yeah - your new uploads are really fun to watch! Great use of colour =D

  • Suddenly I can feel my heart pumping in my chest very clearly.

  • Excellent how little waffle there is, and how you get just to the point, in your videos!

  • Hey Sal, you should do a series of videos for MCAT prep

Your latest bio videos have been very informative.

  • Saturated fat is bad doesn't matter whether is comes from animal or plant source. It causes rise in Low Density Lipoprotein LDL which is a bad type of cholesterol. Trans fat is even worse which is partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. It not only rises LDL and VLDL(very low density lipoprotein) cholesterol but also reduces HDL(high density lipoprotein) which is a good type of cholesterol.

  • Blood goes in, blood goes out. Sal can explain that

  • yes

  • LOVE, LOVE, your new uploads!

  • ANGINA lol

  • Hey Sal! You mind doing the entire anatomy of the human body?

  • @raindeer2000 I hope not. It's embarrassing that he knows almost as much as *I* do about my job. That may be ego-involvement, but I can't help it. It's embarrassing, b/c I had to go to Paramedic School to be trained. He hasn't gone to paramedic school, so where did he get all the knowledge?

  • @raindeer2000 crack an atlas. not to be hostile but, how is he supposed to do the entire anatomy if in medschool you spend about 6 weeks on bones and skeletal muscles alone.

  • the comment below isnt true either

  • If you are a vegetarian and are eating a well balanced vegetarian diet and are getting exercise everyday, you don't need to worry about heart disease or heart attacks.

  • @RespectMyHate Exercise is excellent for good health, but being a vegetarian doesnt help much. Doesnt hurt either though.

  • @kungfufreak360 Meat is loaded with saturated fat which clogs arteries, fruits and vegetables on the other hand have only unsaturated fats which is the pro health form of fat.

  • @RespectMyHate Depends on the meat and where you get it. If you are getting bacon and sausages from McDonalds then of no doubt its full of saturated fats that are bad for you. But if you are making home made chicken or something its not bad at all and is actually good for you

  • @RespectMyHate That's absolute bullshit. Saturated fats do not clog arteries. Our food guidelines are a load of bull, look back at the medical evidence and literature and you'll see a lot of the info comes from poor science including drug company funded studies.

  • @RespectMyHate go watch Fat Head(2009)

  • the comment below does not warrant a reply

  • are u a sergen?

  • You're awesome!

  • Hey Sal.. Do u knw what... I requested u for more biology.. U did it.... At that tym I felt that i have a robot..!
