Sometimes when i'm asleep I wake up from a shiver or a vibration that comes suddenly and lasts for 2-3 seconds, and they stop once I'm awake. some people told me it's related to a heart disease. Is it true? Can anyone explain to me why I get these vibrations
i agree until you you started talking about how the blood clots it doesnt actually clot around the plague that breaks loses it clots around the membrane that broke were the plague was builiding up until no blood gets to the muscles of the heart and then you have a heart attack.
@ro33han I wouldn't, his videos are generally good but the medicine videos are extremely basic and do not offer much practical application. I'm not surprised. He's clearly very intelligent but we can't expect him to know everything. He missed out the point that LDL has to be oxidised into a non-polarised molecule before it can come harmful.
sal instead of anatomy which is pretty easy once you have a picture book... would you guys consider PHYSIOLOGY OF THE BODY.... LUNGS, KIDNEYS, HEART, WITH ALL THE HORMONES AND DETAILS...
Excellent, excellent video. Only main issue I have (I'm a medical student) is that the LCA is not commonly blocked; the main artery occluded is the Left Anterior Descending artery (LAD), which is a BRANCH of the LCA (which is actually quite short).
@Ferrus91 CHF occurs when heart muscle is too weak to pump out enough blood at one go. What then happens is that the sheer volume of blood backup overloads the heart and lungs (hence "congestion"). Heart failure by definition is the inability of the heart to maintain adequate output - so CHF = heart failure due to blood backup into the heart and lungs.
Me again. Most myocardial infarctions are caused by plaque rupture, not by embolic plaques that block arteries downstream. A cardiac arrest is due to an acute, abnormal fast heart rhythm such as ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. The heart doesn't "stop" but beats so very fast that it doesn't fill or pump sufficiently to support the circulation and unless treatment ensues, a person would die. Heart failure is when the pump backs up, unable to keep up with the body's needs.
@6:25 you use the term thrombosis to refer to a blockage caused by traveling clot. While "thrombosis" is technically correct, it is perhaps better to refer to this as "thromboembolus" (or some variation depicting the embolic mechanism).
Little point of correction Sal, the RCA and LCA are 'higher-up' closer to the aorta. In the video RCA is actually right marginal artery, a branch of RCA. LCA is left anterior descending artery, a branch of the LCA.
There's also right-side and left-side heart failure w/ names of several different medical diagnoses; like atrioventricular block, bundle branch block and a number of other diseases and defects I have to go over in my memory every day lest I forget them.
We do continuing education on a nonstop basis, and they fill our heads w/ more and more conditions, as if they're in a contest to see who can give us the most information before our memory blows a gasket. That's how it feels sometimes.
And if anybody like fancy words, it's DEFINITELY most medical doctors. I think it's rude to talk to the patient like some of them do, using words they can't possibly know just so the patient will remember yet again who's the doctor.
Lots of doctors like to feel they're lodge brothers, so the speak in medicalese.
I wish I had Khana Academy on a radio station, so I could listen to him every morning! Thanks for the informative videos Sal. Keep up the good work :) .
from math to physics, from chemistry to humanities, from biology to astronomy..... and now human anatomy?.... Just WOW, I would give anything to have your brain.
I think he's referring to the Coronary System of the heart. I used to confuse it w/ the Conduction System of the heart.
I find cardiology fascinating. I watched an open heart surgery. When they opened the patient's chest you could see the heart beating and the lungs moving in and out. The patient was obviously a nonsmoker. A smoker's lungs are black and wrinkled. I saw it when I was an OR Technician. I thought I would vomit just looking at it.
@yamenhawit Heart Disease, Coronary Artery Disease and Coronary Heart Disease are all the same thing. Heart failure may occur because of heart disease.
@yamenhawit Yes, but some heart diseases come from congenital (from birth) defects like Tetralogy of Fallot, which can create heart disease due to it signs and symptoms. But that's probably TMI.
I'm a paramedic and, while I like the accuracy in this video, it's a beginning to understanding heart failure. It's a GOOD start but there's a monumental flow of information about heart failure that can't be included in one video.
Is it legal to use these images in this video? I know there are free/cc anatomical illustrations, but they would have to be attributed... Not wanting to accuse anyone, just raising awareness of a potential problem.
@khanacademy thank you for taking the time to answer my maybe stupid question, I was just wondering because I wanted to do some anatomy-related videos.
@SEThatered you should not self medicate if you don't know what causes pain.. it needs very critical assessment .. well unless of course if you are a doctor :-)
@towldryer A stroke occurs in the brain, a blockage (for example a thrombosis) prevents blood flow to part of the brain causing loss of brain function or death.
@towldryer stroke an atherosclerosis have in common... but it is just happening in the brain, but the causes may or may not be same as atherosclerosis... it can be thrombosis anywhere in the body which can cause emboli that can be lodge in any small vessels in the brain which can cause ischemia or even hemmorage (if ruptured)
The coronary arteries being clogged isn't the only reason a heart attack occurs. Ask your wife if you don't believe me.
I'm just a paramedic, even though doctors have handed ECG interpretation over to us. They used to do it themselves; now WE have to do it for them, give them the interpretation and listen to SOME of them say we're "wasting [their] time."
There are several other types of heart attacks that aren't related to the coronary system; I just can't remember them, b/c I'm so exhausted.
Saturated fat is bad doesn't matter whether is comes from animal or plant source. It causes rise in Low Density Lipoprotein LDL which is a bad type of cholesterol. Trans fat is even worse which is partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. It not only rises LDL and VLDL(very low density lipoprotein) cholesterol but also reduces HDL(high density lipoprotein) which is a good type of cholesterol.
@raindeer2000 I hope not. It's embarrassing that he knows almost as much as *I* do about my job. That may be ego-involvement, but I can't help it. It's embarrassing, b/c I had to go to Paramedic School to be trained. He hasn't gone to paramedic school, so where did he get all the knowledge?

@kungfufreak360 Meat is loaded with saturated fat which clogs arteries, fruits and vegetables on the other hand have only unsaturated fats which is the pro health form of fat.
@RespectMyHate Depends on the meat and where you get it. If you are getting bacon and sausages from McDonalds then of no doubt its full of saturated fats that are bad for you. But if you are making home made chicken or something its not bad at all and is actually good for you
@RespectMyHate That's absolute bullshit. Saturated fats do not clog arteries. Our food guidelines are a load of bull, look back at the medical evidence and literature and you'll see a lot of the info comes from poor science including drug company funded studies.

Once i had a chest pain, really spiking and vague.
I thought it was heart, but it was nowhere near.
A doctor explained that it was a spinal nerve inflammation, and it was not a big deal.
So if you are experiencing a chest pain, DO NOT self-medicate.
Because it might be a very different cause.
Just go visit a licensed doctor.
SEThatered 10 months ago
@SEThatered you should not self medicate if you don't know what causes pain.. it needs very critical assessment .. well unless of course if you are a doctor :-)
TheArvinian01 10 months ago
@TheArvinian01
What are you talking about? I visited my doctor right away.
I only wanted to pinpoint that my personal unprofessional flawed suggestion were completely false.
My heart is doing ok. My spine is just not straight, and that causes pain.
So i repeat myself DO NOT SELF MEDICATE yourself, go visit a doctor, if you have a chest pain.
It is critical to doit sooner, in order to avoid complications.
