It is absolutely ridiculous how good Bernard is playing the bass! I've listened to and dance to this song sooo many times and it always blows me away! And it's not just the pure playing - it's the song that is so great too! Superb!
No, there is a trend afoot, Niles uses a front women, then when they become too succesfull to the cause (and thus potentialy threatening) he drops them, Norma Jean , Luci Martin, then Sister Sledge.He wants to be the main player but is trying to do it by proxy .
@NorthernMars They are all phenoms, Nile is a genius writer, producer, and guitar player. Tony is one of the most sought after studio drummers ever, but even Nile will tell you that he was in awe of Bernard every night on stage, those are his words not mine . To Quote Nile "I used to look over and Bernard would be doing something, you know like that riff in Everybody Dance, if there are any bass players in the room here you know that thing's impossible to play right?"
great song. by late '79-1980 radio programmers were refusing to play most of the good disco songs and played junk like "funkytown" instead. this sounded great then and still sounds good. heard this on the radio today.
in addition to everybody dancing, everybody needs to read Nile Rodgers book "Le Freak" you will gain such an appreciation for this cut as well as the people that made it........this is still such a banger!
I miss the disco 70s!!! We were all so young and SO DAMN THIN!!! Ha! We went to discos and parties to have fun and dance! And we all dressed up in our best! Now kids go to parties looking like sluts and slobs and get drunk and shoot each other! Glad I'm old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@AttitudeCastle Aha! There is hope after all!!! Good for you...If you're 16 and like Chic and disco music, you just made my day! Didn't mean to sound so pessimistic about today's youth. There are those out there like you with quite an ear for good music. Yes, you would have liked the 70s...Chic was a disco group that REALLY dressed up when they'd perform! The girls would even wear flowers in their hair! Hope you and your friends have fun!
@mrob75 i dont listen to disco but i know what ya mean about today's youth. if you talked back to your parents back then you would just get slapped without hesitation, and im 15 and i never talk back.
Bernard Edwards was a genius. He even played the bass solo on The Power Station's hit cover of T. Rex's "Bang A Gong (Get It On)"...even though everyone thought it was played by John Taylor. John won Best Bassist in Rolling Stone's 1986 Reader's Poll and in reality it was because of Bernard's solo!
Calling Bernard Edwards a good bassist is like saying Tiger is an ok golfer or Jeff Gordon is not a bad driver. Bernard was probably the best modern era popular music 4 stringer there ever was, the man's playing is legendary. He's not the only one, yes there's Jaco and Stanley Clarke, etc.etc. but the music is more obscure, for popular genre music Bernard was god, although I know he would be very uncomfortable with being spoken of that way.
I'm 31, and this is before my time. But, I have to admit.... This is the best bassist ever. Too bad this man had to pass on. I would sell everything and quit my job to learn how to play the bass like this man.
Even Chic can playback out of sinc.!!!! amazing. we still love the TOPPOP recordings in Holland for the playback synchronisity. This show was all we had to see the artist perform a new song. and when they couldn't make it to the studio there was a dancegroup that performed live on stage (called Penny de Jager). the presenter Ad Visser is still a Dutch legend.
Brilliant tune, brilliant band, brilliant vocals. Nearly all the tracks these guys made are just packed full of funk and good karma....invaluable contributors to the genesis of dance music.
This is the only song I like to listen too in grand theft auto :P

Pherhaps Norma Jean was let go because she percieved as more dominant than Niles?
GodfreyTempleton 1 month ago
@GodfreyTempleton
Norma Jean was promised a "solo" career, produced by the Chic Organization, she helped get Chic off the ground.
